The Victorian Deaf Education Institute (VDEI), Department of Education and Early Childhood Development (DEECD) commissioned the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) to undertake a project to design, conduct and analyse the learning needs of teachers of the deaf and hard of hearing. The focus of the study was to identify any gap between teachers’ existing skills and knowledge and the skills that are needed to optimise student learning outcomes.

This project description examines how a teacher education program integrated new instructional technology through the creation of a Technology Facilitator position in the department. The project proceeded through a three-tiered system of learning "literacy" to establish a knowledge base amongst faculty members, "augmenting" required courses to model the use of instructional technology, and finally the "transformation" of the credential program where the activity of learning can only be accomplished through leveraging technology. As educators committed to preparing teachers to teach effectively across differences and in ways that actively resist perpetuating injustices, we have found that designing opportunities that take teachers into the children’s community is the best way to learn about the cultural wealth existing in homes and to understand the importance of including parents in the education of their children. College students from a graduate program at a public institution were asked to engage in community, neighborhood and home visits to reflect on their understanding of the relationship among community, home, and schools. This collection explores the connections between mothering/motherhood and literacy as it is broadly defined. Literacy, in this case, encompasses reading/writing literacy as well as multimodal, new or digital, and contested multiliteracies that are socioculturally situated and contextually defined. Mothers are often the object of cultural and popular discourses on family literacy, as well as targets in international campaigns to increase literacy learning. There has been little scholarly attention paid to how mothers in diverse sociocultural contexts do literacy, or how literacies have been mediated or challenged by mothers and motherhood. The brief was to conduct a critical assessment of the content, design, and usability of the Developmental Leadership Framework and make recommendations to the Director of the Bastow Institute of Educational Leadership, on the capacity of the Leadership Framework to adequately support professional learning and certification into the future.

As college campuses become increasingly diverse (Anderson, 2003), institutions have been pushed to create safe and educationally supportive environments for an array of students (Harper, Patton, Wooden, 2009; Bauman, Bustillos, Bensimon, Brown, Bartee, 2005). Little is known about how institutions have come to respond to the, at times hostile, interactions between students, staff, and organizations on college campuses. This study examined the effectiveness of two different approaches to teaching designed to facilitate children’s learning about science concepts/vocabulary related to objects’ floating and sinking and scientific problem-solving skills: responsive teaching (RT) and the combination of responsive teaching and explicit instruction (RT+EI). Participants included 104 children (51 boys) aged 4 to 5 years. Small groups of children were randomly assigned to one of the two intervention groups (RT, RT+EI) or to a control group. Responsive teaching (RT) reflects a common approach to teaching young children, and the combination approach (RT+EI) includes Explicit Instruction as well as responsive teaching. The two …
