Making Sense Of Sound: Fourth Graders Use Physical And Technological Models To Illustrate And Explain The Nature And Characteristics Of Sound, Deepika Menon, Deanna Lankford
Making Sense Of Sound: Fourth Graders Use Physical And Technological Models To Illustrate And Explain The Nature And Characteristics Of Sound, Deepika Menon, Deanna Lankford
Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications
From the earliest days of their lives, children are exposed to all kinds of sound, from soft, comforting voices to the frightening rumble of thunder. Consequently, children develop their own naïve explanations largely based upon their experiences with phenomena encountered every day (Driver et al. 1994). When new information does not support existing conceptions, explanations are refashioned to agree with prior experiences, often resulting in misconceptions (Wesson 2001). Science education literature identifies multiple misconceptions related to sound commonly held by elementary students, including: Sound can only travel through air and not through solids and liquids; sound can travel through a …
Using Importance-Performance Analysis To Guide Instructional Design Of Experiential Learning Activities, Sheri Anderson, Yu-Chang Hsu, Judy Kinney
Using Importance-Performance Analysis To Guide Instructional Design Of Experiential Learning Activities, Sheri Anderson, Yu-Chang Hsu, Judy Kinney
Educational Technology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Designing experiential learning activities requires an instructor to think about what they want the students to learn. Using importance-performance analysis can assist with the instructional design of the activities. This exploratory study used importance-performance analysis in an online introduction to criminology course. There is limited research on experiential learning in online courses as well as empirical data to assist with the instructional design of the experiential learning activities. The primary goal of this article is to demonstrate the use of importance- performance analysis to guide the instructional design of experiential learning activities.
Assessing Model-Data Fit For Compensatory And Non-Compensatory Multidimensional Item Response Models Using Vuong And Clarke Statistics, Leanne Freeman
Assessing Model-Data Fit For Compensatory And Non-Compensatory Multidimensional Item Response Models Using Vuong And Clarke Statistics, Leanne Freeman
Theses and Dissertations
The primary importance of the study was that no statistics were able to provide probabilistic statements about model-data fit between the non-nested compensatory and non-compensatory MIRT models. Secondarily, the Vuong and Clarke statistics have been utilized prolifically in economics and political science and have great potential to contribute to educational measurement. Finally, application of the Vuong and Clarke statistics will not only reduce the damage of misspecified MIRT models but will also promote the use of less known models, in this case, the non-compensatory models.
The purpose of the study was to investigate whether the Vuong and Clarke statistics can …
How Can Self-Regulated Learning Be Supported In E-Learning 2.0 Environment: A Comparative Study, Hong Zhao, Li Chen
How Can Self-Regulated Learning Be Supported In E-Learning 2.0 Environment: A Comparative Study, Hong Zhao, Li Chen
Journal of Educational Technology Development and Exchange (JETDE)
As a critical factor that affects the learning performance in distance education, self-regulated learning (SRL) has elicited considerable interest. Self-regulated learners can manage their learning activities efficiently but researchers indicate that learners have difficulties in SRL behavior. Thus, providing support to facilitate self-regulatory processes is important. E-learning has the potential to be a learning tool to examine students’ self-regulatory skills. New advances in technology, especially the development of Web 2.0 technology, have provided effective support for self-regulated learning. This study addresses the following research question: How can SRL be supported properly in E-learning environment? Because learning processes cannot be conceptualized …
Neoliberalism And Developmental Education: Complexity And Contradictions In California Community Colleges, Antoaneta Gulea
Neoliberalism And Developmental Education: Complexity And Contradictions In California Community Colleges, Antoaneta Gulea
Journal of Critical Issues in Educational Practice
The egalitarian mission of community colleges to provide an open access to educational opportunities for all often contradicts the high academic standards for college readiness, and therefore establishes the need for developmental education. Beginning in the 1970s, neoliberalism as a form of governmentality gradually invaded schools and public services including developmental education in a community college level. This paper explores the neoliberal influence on developmental education in three aspects: the effect of decreased institutional funding for the community college system and increased cost of higher education for students in developmental education, increased curriculum management and accountability expectations on a state …

School Selection Patterns Choice And Traditional Public Schoolsthrough The Lenses Of Rational Choice Theory And Behavioral Economics Theory, Steven Krull
Theses and Dissertations
This study uses rational choice theory and behavioral economics theory to examine parent considerations when selecting an enrollment rich traditional public school (one that grew or sustained enrollment) for their child. Traditional public schools provide children general academic instruction at a school determined by the geographic boundary of their home. For many years, traditional public schools were the dominant publically funded institution for educating children. However, in the current era of school choice, parents now can select from a variety of educational options. In Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS), traditional public schools compete for students with private voucher schools, inter-district open …

Bridging The Gap: A Workshop To Support Sexual Education Outside Of School, Rachel Lambrecht
Bridging The Gap: A Workshop To Support Sexual Education Outside Of School, Rachel Lambrecht
Dissertations, Masters Theses, Capstones, and Culminating Projects
Sex education cannot simply provide the “facts” about sex; students must be given the space and support to make connections between the information they receive and their own behaviors. In order to meet the immediate developmental needs of young people I have created a one-‐day workshop for girls, which is meant to augment current sexual education programming. The aim of the one-‐day workshop is to bridge the gap between information that girls have received from school programming or parents with the new emotional and physical sensations specific to their developing sexuality, to foster connections with peers, and instill a sense …
Connections With The Current Generation Of College Students Using Digital Marketing Practices, Michael Galindo
Connections With The Current Generation Of College Students Using Digital Marketing Practices, Michael Galindo
Dissertations, Masters Theses, Capstones, and Culminating Projects
Higher education professionals in college and university admissions utilize various forms of communication in enrolling their fall class. The problem with the digital generation, also known as the Millennials, is that students have disconnected from the personal touch - the connection that is established between the student, their admissions counselor and the institution. Often it is found that this connection helps prospective students find that perfect fit in selecting a college.
This study identifies several technological approaches and evaluates their effectiveness in undergraduate admissions recruitment. A review of the literature revealed that recent technological advances such as social media, personal …

Grading refers to the symbols assigned to individual pieces of student work or to composite measures of student performance on report cards. This review of over 100 years of research on grading considers five types of studies: (a) early studies of the reliability of grades, (b) quantitative studies of the composition of K–12 report card grades, (c) survey and interview studies of teachers’ perceptions of grades, (d) studies of standards-based grading, and (e) grading in higher education. Early 20th-century studies generally condemned teachers’ grades as unreliable. More recent studies of the relationships of grades to tested achievement and survey studies …
