University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

As early as February, 1942, fears of an agricultural labor shortage began to be expressed in California. The Pacific Southwest Area Committee of the Young Men’s Christian Association asserts in a statement of policy on Emergency Harvest Camps, “The California State Chamber of Commerce’s Central Coast Council’s Agricultural Committee points out that ‘the removal of enemy aliens from coastal areas, the absorption of migrant workers into defense industries, and increased government quotas for the production of many crops has created a serious agricultural problem.’ (News release, February 28, 1942).”

History Of Public Secondary Education In Louisville., Harold S. Keeling Jan 1943

History Of Public Secondary Education In Louisville., Harold S. Keeling

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The development of secondary education in Louisville is significant because this city (together with the City of Covington) took the lead in establishing high schools in Kentucky. Although the state legislature from early days encouraged county seminaries and private academies, it gave practically no attention to high schools until 1908. After the Civil War various cities established high schools. There were few county high schools until the last decade of the century (1890-1900). Fifty-nine Kentucky high schools were accredited by the State University in 1908, but there 1 were perhaps as many unaccredited (with two or three year curricula). The …

The Relation Of The Secondary School Majors And Minors To The Majors And Minors At The Collegiate Level., Lewis Earl Naylor

Master's Theses

The preparation of the curricula for the high schools and colleges of the State of Kansas has been an interesting development of the ideas of the schools and the legislative leaders. The problem has been one that was filled with many complications, determined, on the one hand, by the traditional philosophy that education must have disciplinary value, and on the other hand that the education must be of practical value when the student takes his place in the affairs of everyday life.

The Curve Of Forgetting For Substance Material, Leslie J. Briggs Jul 1942

The Curve Of Forgetting For Substance Material, Leslie J. Briggs

Master's Theses

The purpose of this paper is to describe the method and analyze the results of an experiment on substance memory. The term "substance memory,” as used in the present study, refers to the retention of general ideas derived from meaningful reading material in which the facts presented require some generalization and abstraction of meaning on the part of the reader. This type of memory is to be contrasted with "factual," or "verbatim" memory, in which the task is to retain specific, detailed facts stated in the reading material, and with rote memory, which involves the memory for illogical, disassociated, discrete …

A Critical Analysis Of Report Cards Used In New Mexico, John Robert Grove May 1942

A Critical Analysis Of Report Cards Used In New Mexico, John Robert Grove

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

Many of the ties that used to bind the home and school are gone. The home and the school no longer have the feeling of intimacy that prevailed between them two hundred years ago. In the early American schools it was possible for the teacher to know the parents of nearly every child in the school room. Since this possibility no longer exists in the same degree, some link must be evolved to connect both the home and the school; some method to take the place of meetings on the street or conversations after prayer meeting must be organized to …

To this has been added a smaller amount of information gathered by personal interview with reliable individuals; principally teachers, who have been in the teaching service for many years and who were connected with the events described. While no history can be called complete, the information here assembled can be the basis for those who wish to continue a history of the county schools, in years to come. The interest in Rush …
