Social Justice: Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion
Since the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) in 1990, the number of students with disabilities attending college has increased steadily. At UMaine we have seen this trend first hand. DSS has tracked our student data for a number of years and over the past decade the number of students with documented disabilities served by DSS has increased 82.7%. During the 2001-02 school year we assisted 214 students with disabilities. Last year we worked with 391 students.

Collaborative Research: Paradigms In Physics: Creating And Testing Materials To Facilitate Dissemination Of The Energy And Entropy Module, John R. Thompson
University of Maine Office of Research Administration: Grant Reports
Topics in statistical and thermal physics have long been problematic in the undergraduate curriculum. To many students, the subject matter is abstract and theoretical and often requires mathematical tools they lack. This project addresses the challenge of teaching upper-division thermal and statistical mechanics by building on the Energy and Entropy (E&E) paradigm developed through the Paradigms in Physics Project at Oregon State University and a physics education research project at the University of Maine. E&E takes a radically different approach to statistical mechanics, incorporating the issues of quantum mechanics and measurement at its core and focusing on entropy as the …

In 2012, the Center for Research on Sustainable Forests (CRSF) completed its second year under an expanded mission to serve the needs of all forest stakeholders in Maine. Building on its rich tradition of working with industrial partners to conduct research related to commercial forestry in the state, the CRSF now strives to solve the challenges of three distinct segments of Maine’s 17 million acres of forest: Commercial Forests, Family Forests, and Conservation Lands. With a renewed focus on relevant, stakeholder-driven research, the CRSF has emerged as a key source of scientific information about all of these forest resources.

Anthropology Department Annual Newsletter, Department Of Anthropology
General University of Maine Publications
Anthropology is the study of humans. Anthropologists study the entire spectrum of human existence from 6.5 million years ago when the first hominid set foot on the African continent, the process of human evolution, domestication of plants and animals, development of civilization, migration to the ends of the earth, and the present day diversity of cultures, religions, economies, and kinship systems seen around the world. Anthropology provides a well-rounded, generalist education that enhances wide career choices and provides students with the ability to critically evaluate theories, options, and actions that affect humankind.

The Case For Instrumental Music Education: The Academic, Physical, And Social Benefits For Students, Kayla M. Peard
Honors College
Music is an integral part of our lives. There are countless examples of how learning music affects intelligence in students, but that is not music’s only benefit. Music is an academic discipline available in schools in which students’ simultaneously develop cognitive abilities, physical abilities, and social skills. This is particularly evident in the instrumental music classroom.
Through the studying of instrumental music and playing in ensembles, students learn countless lifelong skills that help them develop into intelligent, creative leaders. The cognitive abilities of the students grow and expand the longer they study music. Furthermore, it has been proven that their …

Educator Responses To Technology Influences In A 1:1 Laptop Middle School, David C. Boardman
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Across the globe, students learn with digital texts, classrooms connect through the world-wide web, and elementary students apprentice in highly technical skills such as moviemaking or animation. As education embarks on the second decade of the 21st century, technology is becoming more sought after than ever before as countries prepare their youth for the future. But educational technology initiatives could easily leave learning stagnant and waste millions of public dollars if not designed and implemented in ways to create transformative learning experiences to prepare youth for today's highly collaborative digital world. This study investigates how teachers view various influences encouraging …

Classroom Realities: Teaching Students With Disabilities As A Traditionally Or Alternatively Certified Secondary Science Teacher In Maine, Haley A. Richardson
Honors College
This study aimed to determine the characteristics of effective pre-service instruction and in-service professional development based on certification route that affect Maine secondary science teachers’ preparedness to accommodate students with disabilities. Traditional and alternative certification routes differ in fundamental elements such as length, course requirements, and format, leading to teachers who have different strengths and weaknesses, and consequently, different professional development needs. Effective preparation for instructing students with disabilities is an important issue because the trend toward full educational inclusion increasingly will require that classroom teachers have the skills to make appropriate accommodations. A survey sent to Maine secondary science …
