The 2012 Festival will be held at the Collins Center for the Arts on February l Sth and will feature matinee and evening performances. We intend to involve as many relevant campus groups and departments as possible to make this a true campus wide collaboration. As in past years this event will be free so that people of Maine have access to the cultural vitality of the University of Maine. In past years people have come from as far away as Presque Isle and Portland to enjoy this event.

Ballads in Maine Workshop consists of a panel discussion/performance and audience participation of several ballads collected in Maine. A history of ballad collecting in the British and American tradition presented by Pauleena MacDougall, Ballads as Literature presented by Sarah Harlan-Haughey and performance of ballads by musicians Julia Lane and Jeff McKeen. We will also invite the audience in advance to bring their favorite ballad and have an open discussion with the audience about ballads and ballad singing. The first International Dance'Festival was held in 2005 at Minsky Hall and was sponsored by the Office of International Programs, Multicultural Programs, Student Heritage Alliance Center and the international student groups across campus. The event brought all the international organizations tog'ether and created a base to share and work with each other collaboratively. The success of this event inspired the student groups involved to make this celebration of cultural diversity an annual event and to expand on the quality and depth of participation. The amount we request-$7,500-represents just under fifty percent of the projected operating budget for the spring Series of $15,538. The majority of the financial support for the Series will be provided by the English Department through its Elliott Fund and by the National Poetry Foundation through its Thayer Fund. The Honors College provides $1000 per semester to support the Series. The detailed budget appended to this letter provides an overview of projected expenses and revenue sources. In accordance with the Committee's recent request, I have adopted the standard budget form and supplemented it with a spreadsheet that itemizes projected expenses. …

Dance classes are extremely popular with students and enrollments and attendance have gone up. Consequently, there are always waiting lists for students to enroll in classes, particularly beginning classes, as well as lines in the lobby at the performances. This is due to the efforts of our professional faculty and staff, who make dance at UM a significant learning experience that rounds out a student's education. Dance classes culminate in actual dance concert performances that feature jazz, ballet, tap, modern, hip hop, and international themes.

Six exhibitions are presented each year by the Department of Art in the Lord Hall Gallery. These exhibitions include work by students and faculty as well as a range of nationally known and exhibited artists. This coming spring semester, the Lord Hall Gallery will house an exhibition of print-based imagery created by artists from across the country. Coming to the gallery in the form of two portfolio collections, individual pieces have been selected in order to represent diverse approaches to conceptualizing and creating print-based works as well as the nature of distinct media forms.

Spring Awakening is a rock musical adaptation of the controversial 1891 German play of the same title by Frank Wedekind. It features music by Duncan Sheik and a book and lyrics by Steven Sater. Set in late-l9th century Germany, it concerns teenagers who are discovering the inner and outer tumult of sexuality. The original play was banned in Germany for some time due to its frank portrayal of abortion, homosexuality, rape, child abuse and suicide. In the musical, alternative rock is employed as part of the folk-infused rock score. Spring Awakening received eleven 2007 Tony Award nominations, winning eight, including …
