The implications of enrollment decline at Malcom X College has created a dilemma and major economic concern to the college that it launched a college-wide marketing approach to attract new types of students in addition to high school graduates. Responding to this campaign, the Dietetic Technology-Nutrition program targeted the employees working full-time in hospitals and health care facilities’ dietary departments through a needs survey. The writer implemented an intensive science program for the fourth, fifth and sixth grade students plus one self-contained SLD class of intermediate students. The two goals of the program were to increase the number of classroom teachers using the lab and to increase the amount of time that the science lab was used. All of the regular intermediate teacher and one self-contained learning disabled intermediate teacher used the lab. A team effort led by the author developed and implemented a model program designed to improve fifth grade students’ knowledge of music history through computer- assisted instruction. The goals of the program were to have the student be able to identify the different periods of music history, music styles of those periods, composers and various writing styles of the composers. The program contained four basic components: pre-test, implementation, post-test and results. This practicum addressed the effectiveness of a formal orientation program for new full time students at Central Arizona College. The study made a comparison between those students who participated in the orientation program those students who did not. The basis of this comparison was the total number of credit hours completed with a grade other than “W”, and the mean grade point average (GPA) for both groups at the conclusion of the Fall Semester, 1985. A computer program was implemented by the writer as an aid to improve third graders’ spelling word mastery. The program's aims were to help medium-ability third graders improve spelling scores and proficiency. Following observation and weekly spelling test scores, three third grade teachers, which includes the writer, chose five medium-ability students from their rooms to be involved in the ten-week project. Evaluation of the project by the students' pre- and posttest results and the teacher post-survey concluded that the computer aided in the improvement of students' spelling scores and spelling proficiency. The program's aims were to make sure that disciplinary actions such as suspension did not interfere with a handicapped student's rights to an appropriate education, and to reduce the total number of external suspensions focusing on exceptional students. The author implemented a computerized management system to improve instructional efficiency within the classroom. A variety of computer application software were used for grading and prescriptive analysis in the fifth grade classroom. The teacher developed a data base of student information, and parental contact was conducted via grade sheet reports and word processed form letters. Keyboard skills were taught to the students during their Computer Science and Language arts lab periods so that word processing skills could be introduced. The program's goal was to provide more accessible continuing education for nurses who identified a need to learn Arterial Blood Gas Analysis. Nurses needed a supplemental learning program to educate them in current nursing practices at their convenience because they could not attend classes. A testing program utilizing a voice synthesizer and double-sized graphics was developed for high school partial vision students in a Business Education Microcomputer Applications class. Prior to the program, partial vision students had failing test grades. In order to take a test, the partial vision student had to go to a resource lab to use a reader. Content specific lEPs address curriculum which is assumed the same for all students. Individual needs and "how" the student can benefit form the instructional setting and art the unique needs of the exceptional student. This methodology for writing IEPs is called "enabling skills." The writer applied an increased frequency of general music instruction given to a target group of kindergarten children in order to measure its impact on auditory memory sequencing skills. A control group received the general music instruction on a less frequent basis. The writer, a music teacher specialist, theorized that skills learned in the music class setting would transfer to other (academic) classroom settings, as measured by a standardized testing instrument and a classroom teacher survey checklist. This occurred at a secondary institution where there were five different approaches to the program: Guest speakers, movies, after school activities, environmental improvements and positive sharing. Learning disabled students at the secondary level have inferior socialization skills with peer groups and poor self-perceptual skills. Studies indicate that socialization appears to be the keystone of adolescent development. Evaluative instruments employed to discern interpersonal and socialization skills were the IPAT-Anxiety Scale Questionnaire Test-Self-Analysis Form (Cattell, Krug, Scheier) and the Self-Inventory (Simon-Howe-Kirschenbaum). Peer Counseling, observations, filmstrips and guest speakers were utilized to implement this socialization. skills program. Results indicated improved self-esteem, increased communication with peer groups and more positive attitudes toward self and others. (Appendices include sample instruments and student data.)

The author of this practicum developed and implemented a program to introduce global perspectives focusing on Haitian culture in a sixth grade class for learning disabled students. The program's aim was developed to get the students to develop an understanding of Haitian culture and a perspective of feeling and caring for others of a Haitian background. Students enrolled in these classes tend to have high levels of communication apprehension (CA). which these large classes it is difficult to apportion class time to reducing CA. the purpose of this study was to determine whether the most often used treatment of CA, systematic desensitization (SD) lowers CA significantly enough to justify the use of class time.
