The prospect of bringing off a new journal is character building, I have come to believe—particularly when it is published only once a year and by a fledging organization. The Journal of the Assembly for Expanded Perspectives on Learning (JAEPL) had to be good, very good, especially the inaugural issue. That this was the first issue also meant, I hoped, that readers would tolerate mistakes. Surely, mistakes could be corrected with the next issue. But on second thought, that was a long year away.

Nonetheless, I celebrate the occasion of the inaugural issue of JAEPL. …

Attitudes Of Secondary School Students In Israel Toward The Use Of Living Organisms In The Study Of Biology, Pinchas Tamir, Aliza Hamo

International Journal for the Study of Animal Problems

The study deals with attitudes and views of 456 Israeli students in grades 7, 9, and 11 regarding the use of living animals in research and biology instruction. It was found that most students are interested in studying live animals through direct observation and experiment and feel that this kind of learning is superior to learning from secondary sources. At the same time, however, most students exhibit concern for and affection toward living organisms in general and higher animals, especially pets and "beneficial" animals, in particular. Laboratory, Computer Program Audio-Visual Or Lecture Methods, Karin A. Ostrand

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

A comparison is made of the relative learning effectiveness under several instructional methods: a laboratory approach, computer-programmed instruction, and audio-visual teaching, with the traditional lecture method as a control. No significant differences have been recorded relative to the different methods or sex of the students. Some indication of preference among the laboratory and computer groups for those activities is noted, but not sufficiently strong to be considered educationally significant.

Multi-Use Of The Campus Environment In The Teaching Of Botany, Jewel E. Moore

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Use of the campus environment in the teaching program is described with special reference to the campus of University of Central Arkansas. Permanent labels identify the campus trees, many of which are representative of native Arkansas trees. A Daylily Display Bed and an Iris Display Bed, both composed of hybrid varieties, are included in the campus design. This organization of the flora of the campus provides a community service as well as an outdoor supplement to the classroom studies in plant science.

Natural Areas And Reference Collections For Environmental Education In Some Arkansas Schools, Jewel E. Moore

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

A survey of 20 school campuses throughout Arkansas showed that most lack natural areas for outdoor environmental education. For most Arkansas schools no checklists of local plants are available, and there are no reference collections at the schools. Projects are underway at State College of Arkansas to establish herberia for the woody plants of Arkansas and the vascular plants of Faulkner County.
