An Analysis Of Critical Incidents To Determine Effective And Ineffective Clinical Instructions, Nyrabella Fiedler Clague
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
It was the purpose of this survey to determine what constitutes effective and ineffective clinical instruction from the student's viewpoint, and to make the findings available. The descriptive survey method using the critical incident technique was used as the method of research. A critical incident report form was constructed as a tool for gathering the data. There were 117 students of nursing who submitted 166 incidents; 52 per cent were of effective instruction and 48 per cent of ineffective instruction.
A review of pertinent literature revealed that the reactions of students to teachers were important criteria to use as one …

A Proposed Guidance Program For The Bangkok Sanitarium And Hospital School Of Nursing, Salinee Svetalekha
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
One of the great needs of young people is guidance. It is not easy for the student who enters a school of nursing to make the necessary adjustments within the profession and environment without problems. Students at the Bangkok Sanitarium and Hospital School of Nursing in Thailand are no exception, and a large number withdraw from the program before graduation. Students at this institution represent many different nationalities, cultures, customs, and religions, and much guidance is needed.
It was the purpose of this study to prepare a plan for a guidance program for the Bangkok Sanitarium and Hospital School of …
A Survey Of Hospital Facilities Potentially Available For Nursing Education In Orange County, California, Mabel M. Sanders
A Survey Of Hospital Facilities Potentially Available For Nursing Education In Orange County, California, Mabel M. Sanders
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
In the past decade the nurse/population ratio in the West had been declining. The region was not educating enough nurses to replace normal labor market turnover. The migration of nurses into the area was not in proportion to the explosive growth. In view of the deficit it became imperative for California communities to plan for expansion of existing nursing education facilities and to consider the development of new programs where educational and clinical facilities were available.
This study was concerned with hospital facilities available for nursing education in Orange County, California. Its purpose was to investigate hospital resources that might …
A Laboratory-Centered General Chemistry Course For College Freshmen, Alexander Vavoulis
A Laboratory-Centered General Chemistry Course For College Freshmen, Alexander Vavoulis
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
In order to give the laboratory-centered course a trial run and to compare it with a lecture-centered course it seemed necessary to the author that both courses should be taught and compared. The latter gave rise to the following hypotheses:
- Students in a laboratory-centered general chemistry course show more favorable attitudes toward chemistry than do students in a lecture-centered course.
- Students in a laboratory-centered course show as good a subject-matter mastery as students in a lecture-centered course.

A New Approach To General Chemistry Laboratory In College (With) A Laboratory Manual For General Chemistry, Constantine G. Vlassis
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Statement of the problem. This study was carried out to determine: (1) what advantages a laboratory-centered general chemistry course might have over the conventional laboratory course, and (2) whether improved understanding of laboratory work leads to better learning of chemistry. The four following questions were raised in connection with the study or this problem:
- What is the need for a laboratory-centered course?
- What has been done in the past to meet this need?
- Can students learn chemistry more effectively in a laboratory-centered course as compared to the conventional course?
- Is a laboratory-centered course to be preferred over the conventional course …

An Evaluation Form For Professional Staff Nurses, Barbara Jean Brauer
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The problem of this study was to develop an evaluation form to measure the differentiation in quality of nursing care given by professional staff nurses. It was hoped that the evaluation form could be used by administrators of nursing service as a basis for giving pay increases based on nursing performance.
A review of nursing literature did not reveal the existence of an evaluation form based on verifiable data of performance upon which an objective evaluation could be made.
The critical incident technique was used to gather the data for the study. The respondents were nursing supervisory personnel employed in …

A Study Of Form And Content For A Laboratory Manual To Be Used By Students In General Chemistry Laboratory, Berne P. Broadbent
A Study Of Form And Content For A Laboratory Manual To Be Used By Students In General Chemistry Laboratory, Berne P. Broadbent
Theses and Dissertations
This investigation was carried out for general chemistry classes in which recitation and laboratory work are closely integrated and in which very close supervision is given to laboratory classes. Results indicate that there are fewer failures under these conditions if students do individual work. Students receiving grades of over 80% seem to work just as effectively in pairs as they do when working individually, but about 5% who fail when working in pairs could, apparently obtain grades above 60% if they did individual work. The formal full statement type of report is substantially more effective than the questionaire report as …

Molecular Organic Compounds Of Ortho And Para Aminobenzoic Acids, Weldon E. Cate
Masters Theses
The nature of the linkage between the components of molecular organic compounds is not clearly understood, although the existence of this type of compound has been known for many years. Since efforts to explain the structure of molecular compounds by the different theories of valence have met with only partial success, a series of investigations is being carried out in the Chemistry Laboratories of the University of Tennessee in an effort to formulate a theory by which the structure and properties of this interesting but perplexing type of compound may be explained.
The object of this investigation of the molecular …
Problem-Solving In Arithmetic, Eva M. Acker
Problem-Solving In Arithmetic, Eva M. Acker
Bachelors’ Theses
For a century arithmetic has been a popular subject in the elementary schools, and has consumed more time than any other subject. The war had an effect in reducing this time on arithmetic, largely due to the war-time emphasis on health, food production, back-of-the-line morale, and kindred subjects. More recently, school activities and playground work have come in for a reasonable share of the school time. The Twenty-ninth Yearbook recognizes the child as the center of interest, and the final criterion of all values being the effect any technique of teaching or any content of instruction has on the child. …

Experimental And Observational Geometry, Albert D. Field
Experimental And Observational Geometry, Albert D. Field
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Geometry has the distinction of being one of the oldest subjects given in the high-school.
Its subject-matter was formulated and organized by the Greeks into a fine system of thought before the time of Christ. Since leaving the hands of the Greeks, geometry has received only a few minor changes, and these largely in recent years.
Heretofore, the study of geometry has been made almost entirely dependent upon memory and reasoning. Geometricians have been slow in adopting the laboratory and observational methods.
This thesis has been written to encourage the student in his work of observing geometrical forms, and in …
