Editor’S Introduction, Ada Long
Editor’S Introduction, Ada Long
Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive
The topic of this issue’s Forum, “The Professionalization of Honors,” has a history in the National Collegiate Honors Council that probably goes back to its origins and that has evoked turbulent controversy within the past three or four decades. In the mid-1990s, the proposal to establish a document titled “The Basic Characteristics of a Fully Developed Honors Program” arose from a perceived vagueness about the meaning of “honors education .” Proponents of the document claimed that they were simply trying to create clarity out of chaos in defining the profession of honors while opponents feared the prospect of standardization. Heated …
The Current Status, Perceptions, And Impact Of Honors Program Review, Rebecca Rook
The Current Status, Perceptions, And Impact Of Honors Program Review, Rebecca Rook
Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive
While the National Collegiate Honors Council (NCHC) supports routine, systematic program review, research suggests that only about half of honors programs engage in some form of assessment. This study examines the current state of honors program evaluation by gauging honors administrators’ perceptions of program review and assessing the impact of the NCHC’s review process on those programs that have employed it. A census of all NCHC honors directors was taken using questionnaires. Fifteen percent (n = 121) completed the census, with results suggesting substantial increases (87–91%) in program assessment from 2011 and a majority of respondents (87%) describing the review …
Honors, Professionalism, And Teaching And Learning: A Response To Certification, John Zubizarreta
Honors, Professionalism, And Teaching And Learning: A Response To Certification, John Zubizarreta
Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive
This essay responds to an argument for certification based on a particular sociological theory of professionalization. The case for certification rests on the supposition that honors has evolved from a nascent educational movement focused on distinct teaching and learning approaches for high-ability students to one that is now ready to professionalize in ways that require more specialization, organizational oversight, systematic evaluation, and exclusive credentialing through certification. The author suggests that honors is already a full-fledged professional endeavor, recognizing that the core emphasis on teaching and learning in honors is a genuinely professional endeavor when performed authentically in the experimental, creative, …

College Choice Decisions: An Analysis Of University Honors Students, Thomas Tyler Clark
College Choice Decisions: An Analysis Of University Honors Students, Thomas Tyler Clark
Dissertations
The purpose of this research was to analyze the importance of various institutional attributes in the college-choice process of honors students. The study surveyed honors students (N = 279) currently enrolled in an honors college at one university. Students rated 51 items on the degree of importance in their college decision. An exploratory factor analysis was used to determine the underlying factors in the college-choice process.
The results indicated that cost was the most important issue students considered when determining an institution to attend. Cost of attendance and financial assistance offered were followed by quality of course instruction, safety on …

Instructional Leadership Abstracts
Last month’s Instructional Leadership Abstract featured my colleague, Dr. Shawnda Navarro Floyd’s discussion about responding to trauma in our educational practice. A poignant part of that conversation concerns unexpected tragedies that take the lives of colleagues at our institutions. This is a difficult topic to write about but also vital as we navigate the COVID pandemic. I teach a business communication class, and towards the end of the term, I share 10 Things Extraordinary People Say Every Day (Haden, 2013). I talk with each class about words they say at work. When I share the saying, “I love you,” the …
Fostering Equitable Opportunities For All Students Through Transfer Of Equity Knowledge, Corinne Brion
Fostering Equitable Opportunities For All Students Through Transfer Of Equity Knowledge, Corinne Brion
Educational Leadership Faculty Publications
To date, there has been little research conducted among school leaders on how new equity knowledge gets transferred to schools. The purpose of this qualitative study is to explore the extent to which educational leaders attending a year-long equity program are able to transfer the newly acquired knowledge to their professional lives. Findings reveal that leaders were able to use new equity knowledge in their personal and professional lives. Further analysis identifies enhancers and inhibitors to the transfer of such equity knowledge. The researcher provides policy recommendations related to facilitating and sustaining the transfer of equity knowledge among school leaders.

Instructional Leadership Abstracts
COVID-19 thrust most higher education institutions into 100% online learning during the Spring of 2020 with a ready or not approach. Despite the many obstacles faculty and students faced, the end result was a valiant effort that afforded students the opportunity to continue to access education in the face of many uncertainties. With the initial rush to move coursework online behind them, academic administrators turned toward planning for the future. What should learning look like long term while working through COVID-19? How do we adequately support full and part-time faculty and staff? Should learning be kept online indefinitely? If there …
