Who Wrote The Books: A History Of The History Of Student Affairs, Anna L. Patton
Who Wrote The Books: A History Of The History Of Student Affairs, Anna L. Patton
Journal of Critical Scholarship on Higher Education and Student Affairs
This historiography offers a critique of the common narrative of student affairs history by considering the ways in which the history of student affairs is mediated by those scholars writing the texts. Student affairs professionals and scholars are regularly engaged in reflection on current practices, trends, and concerns within the field; however, it is equally important to continue looking back into our professional history. In this paper, I employ a process of historiography to critique the way in which the history of student affairs is mediated by those scholars writing the texts. A historiography seeks to tell the history of …
Articulated Racial Projects: Towards A Framework For Analyzing The Intersection Between Race And Neoliberalism In Higher Education, Jon S. Iftikar
Articulated Racial Projects: Towards A Framework For Analyzing The Intersection Between Race And Neoliberalism In Higher Education, Jon S. Iftikar
Journal of Critical Scholarship on Higher Education and Student Affairs
Scholars have been documenting the effects of neoliberal educational policies, practices, and ideologies on staff, faculty, and students of color in higher education. Their work has raised important conceptual questions about the relationship between neoliberalism and race: Has neoliberal hegemony brought about a significant rupture with previous racial regimes, or does the current racial-neoliberal formation in higher education represent a re-articulation, a recombination of pre-existing elements in new formations? Our ability to answer this question will aid in theory development and lead to new strategies for interventions. In this article, I argue that the intersection between race and neoliberalism should …
Normal Schools Revisited: A Theoretical Reinterpretation Of The Historiography Of Normal Schools, Garrett H. Gowen, Ezekiel Kimball
Normal Schools Revisited: A Theoretical Reinterpretation Of The Historiography Of Normal Schools, Garrett H. Gowen, Ezekiel Kimball
Journal of Critical Scholarship on Higher Education and Student Affairs
This article provides a theory-driven account of the emergence, development, and ultimate disappearance of the normal school as a unique institutional form within higher education. To that end, this article engages new institutionalism in order to construct a composite narrative from the historiography of teacher education which counters the cursory treatment of normal schools in popular and widely-used synthetic histories of higher education. This article also responds to the challenge of better integrating normal schools into the historiography of higher education and suggests future avenues for theory-driven history.

Varying Instructional Approaches To Physical Extraction Of Mobile Device Memory, Joan Runs Through, Gary D. Cantrell
Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law
Digital forensics is a multidisciplinary field encompassing both computer science and criminal justice. This action research compared demonstrated skill levels of university students enrolled in a semester course in small device forensics with 54 hours of instruction in mobile forensics with an emphasis on physical techniques such as JTAG and Chip-Off extraction against the skill levels of industry professionals who have completed an accelerated 40 hour advanced mobile forensics training covering much of the same material to include JTAG and Chip-Off extraction. Participant backgrounds were also examined to determine if those participants with a background in computer science had an …

Operationalizing The Roles Of Experiential Learning: Bringing The Partnership To Life, Adam Lewandowski, Debbie G. Depalma, Rebecca S. Englund, Melissa M. Cartwright
Experiential Learning & Teaching in Higher Education
This article focuses on the partnership between Discovery Charter School of Rochester, New York, founded in 2011, and Nazareth College Partners for Learning. The Partners for Learning program engages Nazareth College students in partnerships with the children, teachers, and staff of eight urban sites. The authors examine the four critical roles that work to foster program success: (1) Associate Director for the Center for Civic Engagement, (2) Student Site Coordinator, (3) Site Representative, and (4) Classroom Teacher. We describe each of the four roles, how the roles support experiential learning, and, most importantly, how we consistently collaborate to ensure success …

A University And Middle School Mentor-Scholar Partnership, Denise Dirienzo, Scott Ball, Robyn Proud
Experiential Learning & Teaching in Higher Education
The State University of New York at Oswego (SUNY Oswego) and the Oswego City School district have created a campus-community partnership through a college program that matches SUNY Oswego students as mentors with at-risk youth in grades 7 and 8 in a structured environment in the school district. The structure is academically based for college students to earn credit based on the tenets of mentoring, youth development, and relationship building. The middle school students, or “mentees” come from an at-risk background that is academic, socially, or behaviorally based. The school district recommends students for inclusion in the program. This innovative …
Integrating High Impact Practices: Recognizing Attributes And Overcoming Obstacles In Learning Eportfolios, Jeno Rivera, Karla Loebick
Integrating High Impact Practices: Recognizing Attributes And Overcoming Obstacles In Learning Eportfolios, Jeno Rivera, Karla Loebick
Experiential Learning & Teaching in Higher Education
In the era of educational accountability, the push to document and demonstrate student learning increases exponentially. Creating opportunities for students to evidence their learning and, more broadly, the value of a college education, is critically important to both internal and external higher education stakeholders. While ePortfolios are an increasingly common tool used to provide evidence of learning, little is known about their effectiveness in assessing integrated learning experiences. The Bailey Scholars Program, an interdisciplinary, self-directed, student-centered learning community at Michigan State University, fosters creativity among faculty and students. The program explores innovative approaches to documenting and assessing learning that are …

Project Iice: Inspiring Interdisciplinary Collaboration Experiences, Tracy Dow, Adam Gilbert, Megan Sawyer, Michael Weinstein, Katharine York
Experiential Learning & Teaching in Higher Education
Project IICE was a multi-disciplinary learning experience designed for students at Southern New Hampshire University. Students worked together in teams to communicate scientific data that was initially collected by an Introductory Botany class. Students in this course measured trees and recorded variables, including tree height, diameter, species, and canopy cover. They shared the data with students in freshman Statistics courses, who analyzed mathematically for trends. Finally, students in Graphic Design used the data to create visual representations and icons. Students collaborated in groups that were randomly assigned across all of the courses to include members of each discipline. During the …

Maximizing Institutional Archives With Limited Resources: A Case Study, Beth Arjona
Maximizing Institutional Archives With Limited Resources: A Case Study, Beth Arjona
The Christian Librarian
This practice-oriented article shares how one small institution on a tight budget without a fulltime archivist leveraged existing resources (human, technological, and physical) to maximize 75 years of institutional archives for a recent milestone alumni reunion. Projects included drafting an institutional history, interviewing long-time members of the institution, organizing photos for display, and providing alumni with access to yearbooks. Special attention is given to the process of creating a 20-minute institutional history video, which premiered at an alumni banquet and was shared with other constituents electronically. There is also a focus on project management and collaborating with coworkers in other …

Creating A Father-Friendly Library: An Examination Of The Importance Of Fatherhood Support In Today's Library Service Model, Michael D. Wells
Creating A Father-Friendly Library: An Examination Of The Importance Of Fatherhood Support In Today's Library Service Model, Michael D. Wells
The Christian Librarian
Research shows the importance of fathers being present in the lives of children. The absence of support for fathers, perpetuates a long standing generational decline in the viability of men as a whole. This work seeks to introduce librarians to the possibilities of libraries offering support for dads. With library use among males being very low, this is also an opportunity for libraries to serve those who are often forgotten. This paper illustrates how the National Fatherhood Initiative (NFI) offers a path to help dads and explains how the NFI and libraries can partner through the creation of programs.
