An Analysis Of The Rules Describing The Use Of Subordination, Mildred Eastwood Mcbride
An Analysis Of The Rules Describing The Use Of Subordination, Mildred Eastwood Mcbride
Graduate Student Research Papers
Subordination is not Mt. Everest, but neither is it a molehill which can be covered in one easy step, and this is what our textbooks try to do. Unfortunately, there is no single easy way to teach the use of subordination, and this paper cannot offer any positive remedy for the inadequacies of our college handbooks. It will, however, discuss the varieties of opinions about the subject, explore several possible approaches, and offer some suggestions for a changed method of teaching subordination to our students.

Moral And Spiritual Values In A High School Anthology Of Literature, Terrence Eugene Kelsay
Moral And Spiritual Values In A High School Anthology Of Literature, Terrence Eugene Kelsay
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
For some years now the need for the emphasis of moral and spiritual values in our public schools has been recognized by the Kentucky Department of Education. The department has given encouragement to numerous research projects and summer workshops held for the purpose of finding an answer to the problem of emphasizing moral and spiritual values in public education. The concern for this need has informally become known as the “Kentucky Movement.”
This study was not undertaken with the thought of introducing new programs in our high schools. The teaching of moral and spiritual values should be done through the …
General Semantics And Shakespeare, Florence Richardson
General Semantics And Shakespeare, Florence Richardson
Theses & Honors Papers
It is not the intention of this thesis to attempt to "explain" any of Shakespeare's plays but simply to use their objective presentation of human problems for illustrating the principles of general semantics. It is realized that many interpretations are possible other than those selected here and it is asked that the reader keep in mind that for the purposes of this paper we are considering the plays only within the framework of that system.

The textbook, an important factor in public school education, is nowhere so wonderfully developed as in the United States. It occupies a more important position in our educational system than it does in the systems of many foreign countries. In fact, most of the teaching in our schools today revolves around the textbook - the cause of much criticism by many writers. They deplore the fact that both our teachers and pupils are dependent on textbooks.
Kentucky Schools In Fiction, Mariema Rowlison
Kentucky Schools In Fiction, Mariema Rowlison
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
There have been many reports made on education in Kentucky since it became a state, but these factual reports are one-dimensional. They present the known, concrete facts, but do not give the true picture any more than flat drawings of a landscape is a true representation of the beauty and feeling of the landscape itself. In this study of the reflection of the schools of Kentucky in the mirror of fiction I have tried to present the scene in perspective, to give it color and to add the fourth dimension of human character.

The Development Of The English Curriculum At Western Kentucky State Teachers College, Dorthie Hall

This development is not the product of the years 1906-1943 exclusively, during which time Western Kentucky State Teachers College has been a chartered stated institution, because the school that became Western Kentucky Normal School in 1906 had been growing for some thirty years.

Vocabulary Study As A Means Of Increasing Speed And Comprehension In Reading, Florence Hunnicutt
Vocabulary Study As A Means Of Increasing Speed And Comprehension In Reading, Florence Hunnicutt
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
There is a need for a clearer understanding of the methods by which vocabularies can be enlarged most effectively. Results of experiments indicate that pupils are unable to recognize their own deficiencies and needs in respect to the meanings of words; consequently they need some type of guidance in enlarging their meaning vocabularies. Teachers are agreed that word lists are a non-effective device. They are agreed, too, that not one or a few techniques are being used to teach the meanings of new words, but many techniques. The two most effective seem to be (1) relating the word to former …

Projects To Stimulate Appreciation Of Literature In Secondary Schools, Emily B. Jacob Mccain
Projects To Stimulate Appreciation Of Literature In Secondary Schools, Emily B. Jacob Mccain
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Progressive educators have realized the crying need for schooling that will carry over into purposeful living in later life. After much experimentation and serious study, the conclusion has been made that the individual differences and interests of the students have often defeated successful teaching of literature by the old method. The use of projects is one of the most valuable ways of according careful consideration and attention to these individual differences and interests in the teaching of literature.
This study of the project in secondary literature courses has been made through visits to schools, interviews with teachers and students, questionnaires, …
Handbook On Teacher Reading In Junior And Senior High School, Reba Galvin Mack
Handbook On Teacher Reading In Junior And Senior High School, Reba Galvin Mack
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Two thousand high school students in Wisconsin were tested recently in reading; one-third of them tested as sixth grade or below in reading ability.1 One of the most difficult problems confronting the schools of America today is "How shall we make good readers of our students?" That no educators are satisfied with the reading accomplishments in our schools is attested by the great number of articles on reading that appear in current periodicals and educational journals and by the increasing number of books on reading that are being published. So great is the flood on technical treatises on the …
Tests & Study Guides In Literature For Secondary Schools, Ida Nance
Tests & Study Guides In Literature For Secondary Schools, Ida Nance
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
When the time came to choose a thesis subject, I immediately said Objective Tests Applicable to Collateral Reading. Having been told "nothing has been done along that line - almost nothing at all," I decided to extend my investigations to include any and all tests in high-school literature - tests for comprehension and appreciation, survey and achievement tests, and tests designed for collateral reading. Each phase of the study has been interesting, but I fear that I have remained somewhat partial to the unit first begun and have perhaps given it a bit more consideration than the other divisions have …

All art sas its underlying philosophy. Poetry which is one of the greatest printed branches of art, has its philosophies which vary greatly indeed. Some poets hold as their philosophy that the highest form of beauty is purely natural and they sing the praises of beauty of form, figure etc. Others hold that the highest form of beauty is intellectual and these praise and glorify the beauty of a well ordered mind. While others hold that man was made for God, and that God is the highest form of beauty. These attempt to portray the relationship of man to God, …

In every period of history there are some characters which stand out very prominently for some great achievement, idea or movement. On some occasions one individual occupies this place of honor, as in the case of Napoleon after he saw gallantly quelled the revolt in the city of Toulon during the Revolutionary War. Literature, like history, has its heroes who, with their pen, influence the world. The 19th century produce the diversity of religious opinion and inquiry, colored by the delicacy of expression which is characteristic of the time. The Victorian age enjoyed the many “masters of expression" for it …

Modern Youth And Literature (With Emphasis Upon Creative Education), Ralph Westerman
Modern Youth And Literature (With Emphasis Upon Creative Education), Ralph Westerman
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
In writing a thesis dealing with such an amazingly wide subject as modern youth one is staggered by the quantities of material that one must read. It is true that most of the research work concerning the young American is propaganda of one kind of another: someone must prove that youth is degenerate; or someone must prove that youth is god-like. Between these two extremes much has been written in an attempt to prove that youth is simply youth--little or no different from the youth of any other age. It is all very illuminating and it is all a bit …
