The Job Finding Methods Of Young People In Australia : An Analysis Of The Longitudinal Surveys Of Australian Youth, Year 9 (1995) Sample, Alfred Dockery, Rob Strathdee
LSAY Research Reports
Recent changes in occupational structure and the declining demand in the labour market for young people, have made it more difficult for school-leavers to find employment. In response to this, policy makers have focused attention on firstly identifying and then removing barriers to school-leavers finding work. This analysis focuses on early labour market entrants; those school-leavers who went directly from secondary school into the labour force, either into work or in search of work, rather than on to further studies. Data was collected from 1995-2000.

Student Variables That Predict Retention: Recent Research And New Developments, Robert D. Reason
Student Variables That Predict Retention: Recent Research And New Developments, Robert D. Reason
Robert D Reason
This article reviews recent research related to the study of college student retention, specifically examining research related to individual student demographic characteristics. The increasing diversity of undergraduate college students requires a new, thorough examination of those student variables previously understood to predict retention. The retention literature focuses on research conducted after 1990 and emphasizes the changing demographics in higher education. Research related to a relatively new variable— the merit-index—also is reviewed, revealing potentially promising, but currently mixed results.

Proximal Factors Predicting Student Performance In A Self-Paced College Psychology Course, Ronald L. Skidmore
Proximal Factors Predicting Student Performance In A Self-Paced College Psychology Course, Ronald L. Skidmore
Faculty Research at Morehead State University
This study examined the effectiveness of using selected self-report measures assessing motivational orientation, learning strategies, procrastination, and perceptions of daily hassles to facilitate the prediction of student engagement in a self-paced introductory psychology course. Research has shown these factors to be associated with academic success, and of concern to instructors and students alike. Surveys that economically and effectively assess these factors would be invaluable for the instructor attempting to predict student engagement and determining possible interventions to promote academic success. Four surveys purporting to measure the constructs were chosen. A demographic survey was also administered.

Community Health Faculty Publications and Presentations
Between 1997 and 2002, dialogue, a process developed by the late theoretical physicist David Bohm and philosopher Krishnamurti, was adapted and used as the central form of pedagogy within two interdisciplinary courses at Portland State University. The purpose of this workshop is, through an interactive experience, to provide participants with an introductory understanding of Bohmian dialogue and its promise as a pedagogy for transformative teaching and learning in higher education. Throughout the past several years, Bohmian dialogue has developed into a process in which meaning and knowledge are created and shared between and among educators and learners during the learning …

The reference period for this report is 2002, when the modal age of respondents was 21 years. Information about the LSAY Y95 cohort's activities in 1999, 2000 and 2001 are available in earlier reports in this series.
Influences On Achievement In Literacy And Numeracy, Sheldon Rothman, Julie Mcmillan
Influences On Achievement In Literacy And Numeracy, Sheldon Rothman, Julie Mcmillan
LSAY Research Reports
This report examines the influence of a range of factors on the literacy and numeracy achievement levels of Year 9 students in Australia. The data were obtained from students in the first wave of LSAY and were analysed using hierarchical linear modelling to account for the sample design of LSAY. Modelling procedures followed a theoretical construct, incorporating variables believed to be important influences on achievement in literacy and numeracy. In addition, variables were selected to ensure consistency between cohorts and between literacy and numeracy. Included in the analyses were variables relating to students (gender, Indigenous background, language background, home location), …

Pedagogy For The Economically Privileged: “Tuning In” To The Privileged Learner, Ann Curry-Stevens
Pedagogy For The Economically Privileged: “Tuning In” To The Privileged Learner, Ann Curry-Stevens
School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations
Today’s activists are challenged by the sheer scope of losses by social movements. We have lost most significant battles and have moved into a defensive position struggling to retain earlier gains in social policy. The gap between rich and poor continues to widen, and it is clear that we need new allies in the struggles for justice. The middle class has been eyed as potential allies, with the hope that in bringing their resources, information, and power to bear, progressive social change will result. This paper draws from dissertation research on a pedagogy for the privileged: research that involves transformative …
Ability Of The Urban Teacher Selection Interview To Identify Teachers Who Are Likely To Be Retained In The Buffalo Public Schools, Patricia Frey
Ability Of The Urban Teacher Selection Interview To Identify Teachers Who Are Likely To Be Retained In The Buffalo Public Schools, Patricia Frey
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
The rate of teacher turnover appears to be higher than employee turnover in many other occupations. What is currently perceived as a teacher shortage may in reality be a problem of teacher retention. This study examined the use of the Urban Teacher Selection Interview, developed by Martin Haberman, Ph.D., as a tool for choosing teachers for urban districts. Almost 36% of those teachers eligible for employment in Buffalo refused employment. This compares favorably with a national average of 40% of teachers who choose not to teach. In general, the higher the interview scores the longer a teacher was retained in …

Office of Academic Innovation Publications
What impact does collaboration between faculty and professional course designers have on the student learning experience? As the use of technologies increases, educational institutions have to find ways of identifying and addressing expectations about how technologies can best be incorporated into the teaching and learning experiences. This paper reports on efforts at Washington State University to develop and assess the course design and faculty development process and the impact the process has on student learning experiences. The results of a comprehensive set of faculty and student surveys from five groups suggest that the systematic course design process improves students' opportunities …
Young People From Low-Ses Families And Participation In Higher Education: Evidence From Five Australian Cohorts, Sheldon Rothman
Young People From Low-Ses Families And Participation In Higher Education: Evidence From Five Australian Cohorts, Sheldon Rothman
LSAY Conference Papers
LSAY research has concentrated on pathways taken by young people and on relationships between outcomes and various background factors. Socioeconomic status (SES) has been one factor of interest, although there has been no consistent identification of SES across all reports, especially in light of the multidimensional nature of SES and components of occupation, education and wealth (Ainley et al., 1995). Of course, because these studies began before these young people entered the labour force, student SES is based on parent occupation and educational attainment. Two reports have examined participation in higher education among the Youth in Transition and LSAY cohorts, …
