This report presents some early evaluation evidence on the effectiveness and impact of the implementation of the Maine Learning Technology Initiative (MLTI). The goal of the Year One evaluation, which is being conducted by the Maine Education Policy Research Institute (MEPRI), is to provide policymakers and practitioners with information that will assist them in determining whether or not, and to what degree, the vision and goals of the MLTI are being achieved. The Year One design is focusing primarily on the students who entered seventh grade in September 2002, and their teachers and schools.

Teachers' Perceived Barriers To Using Computers And The Internet For Instruction, Lisa M. Thompson

The purpose of this study was to identify the three most frequently reported barriers to using computers and the Internet for instruction. This descriptive, survey study used a 17-item survey to gauge the responses of 15 High School InTech educators at Macon State College in Macon, Georgia. The three barriers most frequently reported, among the "Moderate barrier" and "Great barrier" rankings, were "not enough computers"; "outdated, incompatible, or unreliable computers"; and "lack of release time for teachers to learn, practice, or plan ways to use computers or the Internet." Results from the mathematics portion of the Third International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) 1999 Video Study, comparing videotaped Year 8 mathematics lessons from seven countries, were released in March 2003. This paper presents selected findings from that study, with a focus on those results that might be of particular interest to Australian educators. In addition, the paper considers ways in which the results and products from this study can make a lasting contribution to the field of mathematics education. As a tool for studying and improving teaching, video offers tremendous learning opportunities. Videotaped lessons enable teachers to efficiently and effectively 'visit' classrooms not only in their own school, district or country, but also in other countries. Through observing and analysing videotaped lessons teachers can learn about real teaching alternatives as they are actually practised.
