Delusions, Demographics, And Denial: Higher Education's Future In Kentucky And Elsewhere, Aaron W. Hughey, Karl Laves

Faculty/Staff Personal Papers

It doesn’t take a genius to see that everything is not quite right in higher education these days. The feeling that things can’t go on as they have in the past is slowing sinking in for those associated with our colleges and universities. A day of reckoning is coming.

As most college students can attest, the cost of attending college continues to escalate exponentially while the return on that investment is increasingly suspect. The average student loan debt incurred per student is around $38,000, while the average annual salary a newly minted college graduate in Kentucky can expect to earn …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Abstract

An institution cannot exist and function properly without the presence of a library because the services provided by an academic library reflect the quality of the institution. This paper attempts to present a brief overview of the concept of library, research data, Research Data Management (RDM) and its constraints as well as the roles of academic libraries. These roles has experienced new paradigm shift, unprecedented reshaping and alterations as a result of emerging waves of information communication technology (ICT) and its accompanying sustainable and disruptive technologies. Scholars are now producing, storing and disseminating digital data in much larger volumes …

The Impact Of Poverty Informed Faculty On Community College Student Success, Barbara J. Embacher Mar 2023

The Impact Of Poverty Informed Faculty On Community College Student Success, Barbara J. Embacher

Department of Educational Administration: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Community college completion has been proven to be a ticket to a middle-class life. Moreover, we know that poverty causes educational barriers, including community college completion. Community colleges across the nation are identifying significant equity gaps between students from poor versus middle-class or affluent households. One solution to close equity gaps and increase student success rates for students experiencing poverty is to educate college faculty through professional development. This includes 1) information on the causes, myths, stereotypes, and other facts about poverty, 2) the impact poverty has on student achievement, and 3) instructional strategies that can help students experiencing poverty …

The Impact Of A Canine-Assisted Reading Program On Readers Needing Extra Practice, Amanda N. Coffman, Elana Bernstein, Susan C. Davies, Ann F. Justice

Counselor Education and Human Services Faculty Publications

Canines can provide emotional support, create a nonjudgmental environment, facilitate positive social interactions, and shape student behavior. This study investigated the impact of a canine-assisted reading program on four second-grade students' reading fluency and attitudes toward reading. Oral reading fluency (ORF) was measured using ORF probes, and students' attitudes toward reading were measured with the Elementary Reading Attitude Survey. Although ORF skills did not improve significantly following the program, students' attitudes toward reading did. Implications regarding innovative strategies for reading fluency programs, including canine-assisted methods, are discussed, with emphasis on the importance of maintaining reading enjoyment among readers needing extra …

Revisiting Ethnic Differences In In-Person Learning During 2021-2022, Andrew Camp, Alison H. Johnson, Gema Zamarro Feb 2023

Revisiting Ethnic Differences In In-Person Learning During 2021-2022, Andrew Camp, Alison H. Johnson, Gema Zamarro

Education Reform Faculty and Graduate Students Publications

During the 2020-21 school year, Black and Hispanic students were less likely to attend school in-person than white students. Prior research indicated multiple factors helped explain this gap. In this study, we revise these observed racial gaps in in-person learning to examine whether the relationship between these gaps and explanatory factors observed earlier in the pandemic changed during the 2021-2022 school year. We find that, while in-person gaps decreased, Black respondents continued to be less likely to report in-person learning than white respondents. Political leanings and COVID-19 health risks, which helped explain observed gaps in 2020-2021, lose explanatory power. But …
