It was the purpose of this study to investigate further the observed phenomenon of multiplicity of application of descriptive performance appraisal statements to many job families by testing the validity and factor patterns of these statements across a much broader segment of American business and industry. This was accomplished by asking a selected cross section of industrial, manufacturing and financial concerns; government agencies; and public utilities throughout the country to complete a questionnaire. All the data used in this study were obtained from the results of that study.

The purpose of this thesis is to examine the Buildings and Grounds Department of the University of New Mexico. This examination will consist of two major facets. The first will be a broad evaluation of the maintenance program as it presently exists and a comparison of this program with those of other universities around the country. The second major section will be an investigation of the feasibility of subcontracting some of the maintenance functions now performed by the Buildings and Grounds Department to see whether this would be advantageous to the University.

A particular small manufacturing company in New Mexico was selected for the study. The Company was incorporated in 1956 after a short history as a partnership. The primary objectives of this Company were assumed to be: (1) to operate profitably, (2) to provide a good outlet for the talents and skills of the incorporators, (3) to establish a reputation as a high-quality manufacturer, and (4) to allow self-determination on the part of the incorporators. It is the purpose of this study (1) to present two specific techniques used by industry in measuring employee morale; (2) to review the use of of the interview technique as it is used as a means of determining morale in a large scientific laboratory, (3) to present the results of a questionnaire approach as a means of complementing the interview; and (4) to compare the results of interview versus the questionnaire and determine which technique yields the most meaningful and useful information.

An accelerated technological tempo is notable in the demand expressions for military product. As performance requirements move toward ever increasing speeds, higher temperatures, higher strength-to-weight ratios, and miniaturization, the industrial complex exhibits a tendency toward specialized manufacture to meet these demands. There is a resultant multiplication in the complexity of the supplier-buyer relationship as a result of this specialization. Further, as new links are added to the chain of events involved between raw material and piece part manufacturing, through components and subcomponent design and manufacture to the complete system level, the communication network becomes correspondingly complex.
