Customer Service In Aviation Industry – An Exploratory Analysis Of Uae Airports, Aman Gupta, Mohammed Arif, Aled Williams
Aman Gupta
Customer satisfaction is given top priority by all service-oriented industries. The civil aviation industry is no exception. The highly competitive global aviation arena causes various airlines to vie for the top position with lot of importance being given to the customer service. The aim of this study is to analyze the methods and tools used by the United Arab Emirates’ (UAE’s) federal government and the various local governments in the country to improve the customer satisfaction with regard to the aviation industry in the country. This paper develops a framework to assess customer service in the aviation sector in the …
Development Of Generic Key Performance Indicators For Pmbok® Using A 3d Project Integration Model, Craig Langston
Development Of Generic Key Performance Indicators For Pmbok® Using A 3d Project Integration Model, Craig Langston
Craig Langston
Since Martin Barnes’ so-called ‘iron triangle’ circa 1969, much debate has occurred over how best to describe the fundamental constraints that underpin project success. This paper develops a 3D project integration model for PMBOK® comprising core constraints of scope, cost, time and risk as a basis to propose six generic key performance indicators (KPIs) that articulate successful project delivery. These KPIs are defined as value, efficiency, speed, innovation, complexity and impact and can each be measured objectively as ratios of the core constraints. An overall KPI (denoted as s3/ctr) is also derived. The aim in this paper is to set …

Strategic Ambidexterity In Innovation: An Indispensable Capability In The Face Of Change, Janet K. Tinoco

Ambidexterity is a dynamic capability that maybe fulfilled through prudent implementation of organizational processes necessary for product innovation. In this research, a model is tested using data collected from US high technology manufacturers. Results indicate that firms interested in pursuing strategic ambidexterity in innovation should implement all the studied processes in order to improve radical and incremental innovation output. Furthermore, post hoc exploratory analysis suggests that US high technology industries appear to be divided as to the levels of exploration, exploitation, and ambidexterity that they attain.

Up, Up, And Away: The Dynamics Of Innovation In The Us Air Cargo Transportation Industry, Janet K. Tinoco, Ryan Johnson

In 1978 the United States (US) Congress passed the Airline Deregulation Act, allowing all-cargo airlines to compete in an industry that was heretofore highly regulated and stagnant. As companies came and went, successful carriers realized that innovation was necessary to survive. This study analyzes the dynamics of innovation over the industry’s life cycle using intellectual property (IP) data. Results indicate that despite having the characteristics of a commodity, the industry follows a reverse life cycle. Furthermore, FedEx and United Parcel Service (UPS) hold the highest levels of innovation while dominating the market, signifying that innovation should be integrated into the …

We examine the relationship between agent (CEO) risk bearing and the quality of executive risk taking outcomes, by examining the contingency effect of CEO perceived firm efficacy. In doing so, we extend the behavioral agency model (BAM) beyond predictions of risk magnitude to examining how CEO risk taking outcomes differ qualitatively in response to risk bearing. We argue that CEO risk bearing (due to stock options or cash compensation) will positively influence performance outcomes in the presence of higher perceived firm efficacy. However, this positive influence reverses when efficacy is lower. We demonstrate the utility of firm efficacy in exploring …

Relationships based on notions of trust represent a central aspect of the communitarian model of industrial districts. Examination of trust has generated a substantial literature; nevertheless, there have been relatively few studies that have empirically considered the sources of trust that operate in local ties and connections. The paper aims to redress this imbalance by investigating relationships in the Arve Valley industrial district near Geneva. It considers sources of trust by engaging the theoretical framework of Möllering’s (2006a) model of trust which is predicated on the concepts of reason, routine and reflexivity. In conjunction with this, the field research employs …

The Testing and Integration Team plays an integral role in the development of the open source CubeSat known as Open Orbiter. Like any project, the Testing Team’s project can benefit from structure and management to effectively utilize it’s time and resources. CSCI 297 teaches the skills needed to turn a good idea into successful endeavor. By applying skills such as effective planning, setting milestones, dealing with changes and supervising to an actual project, Open Orbiter has transformed from a pipe dream to a real, obtainable goal. Doing this has turned learning about project management into more that just power points …

OpenOrbiter is producing a 1-U CubeSat spacecraft1 to facilitate the construction of low-cost2 spacecraft by others in the future. The Operating Software team is in charge of designing and creating the software that controls most of the CubeSat’s operations such as image capturing, storage management, and temperature sensing. The project management deliverables that we have worked on as a team are the Project Definition, Work Breakdown Structure, and the Project Schedule. The Project Definition defines exactly what our project team will be developing including, but not limited to, what the team is in charge of developing, what its not in …

In CSCI 297 class we partake in learning the roles of software team leads and developers. With hands on activities that get us involved in what a real manager of a software team may do such as: defining a project, planning a project, developing a work breakdown structure, estimating the work, developing a project schedule, etc. This work is performed in the context of the OpenOrbiter project which seeks to build a low-cost spacecraft1 that can be produced with a parts budget of approxi-mately $5,0002 by schools worldwide. The ground station software team’s purpose within Open Orbiter project is to …

Are Committed Employees More Likely To Exhibit Innovative Behaviour : A Social Exchange Perspective, Matthew J. Xerri
Matthew J Xerri
This thesis examines workplace (social exchange) relationships and how they can be used to foster the organisational commitment and innovative behaviour of Australian nursing employees. This research addresses the paucity of knowledge about fostering innovative behaviour in the health sector. Such research is significant because developing innovative behaviour is one way of addressing issues surrounding the shortage of skilled nurses. The findings confirm that workplace social exchange is vital for ensuring employees possess networks to attain knowledge and support for innovative behaviour. Such information about innovative behaviour provides an understanding about one way of developing nurses’ efficiency.

A departmental program review is a great opportunity to plan the future of the program by looking at the past and through an independent lens. The review process can’t be done without a measure of support effort from the entire department. The program will educate attendees about what a departmental review consists of, how to prepare for it, who should be involved.

While dining with Silicon Valley executives in February 2011, President Obama asked Steve Jobs what it would take to manufacture iPhones in the United States. Jobs, in his straightforward tone, replied: “These jobs aren’t coming back!” Surprisingly, only two years later, Jobs’s successor Tim Cook announced Apple’s plans to bring some manufacturing jobs home by making the new iMacs in the U.S. Since then, reports of iMacs sporting a backside stamp “Assembled in USA” have flooded the media.

Financial Incentives: Pay For Performance (P4p) And The Chronically Ill Patients, David Conley, Alberto Coustasse
Alberto Coustasse, DrPH, MD, MBA, MPH
P4P is the reimbursement incentive that is based on quality improvement, efficiency, which is dominating the healthcare landscape and CMS. A literature review was conducted to search for and review significant information regarding P4P and how it pertains to chronic conditions and reimbursement methods. This literature review displayed while some programs were able to display a benefit/ profit for those involved such as insurance companies, hospitals, physicians and/or patients, most programs were unable to establish quality measures, cost effectiveness and positive program outcomes worth noting.

Physician Incentives: Managed Care And Ethics, Douglas A. Mains, Alberto Coustasse, Kristine Lykens
Alberto Coustasse, DrPH, MD, MBA, MPH
The authors review the principle features of the managed care system in an effort to understand the ethical assumptions inherent in managed care. The interrelationships among physician incentives, responsibilities of patients and the physician-patient relationship are examined in light of the ethical concerns identified in the managed care system. The managed care system creates ethical tensions for those who influence the allocation of scare resources. Managed care's administrative controls have increasingly changed the doctor-patient relationship to the businessperson-consumer relationship. Managed care goals of quality and access demand that physicians be both patient advocate and organizational advocate, even though these roles …

Infrastructure can be unreliable and administration subject to corruption in Asia’s rapidly emerging economies. This context presented Singapore with unique opportunities to export its ‘positive reputation’ to locations where these attributes are less certain, through the provision of superior infrastructure, the ability to negotiate investment concessions and, where existing, through the links to influential business groups in the investment location. This strategic initiative is premised on the perception that Singapore’s good relations with multinationals, as well as “connections” with Asian business networks, will give the industrial-township projects a marketing advantage. To complement the extensive literature on Singapore’s flagship projects in …

The development of Singapore-styled industrial parks has resided on the country’s ability to negotiate investment concessions at inter-government level, to provide superior infrastructure, and where existing, through the links to influential business groups in the investment location. Singapore’s first transborder industrialization project in Batam (Indonesia) reflects this stratagem. This paper revisits the debate on the attractiveness of the low-cost investment enclaves for multinational investments, with insights from Batamindo Industrial Park. Through evidence from on-site interviews and case studies, this paper concludes that while the project’s progress to date has been largely overshadowed by socio-political uncertainties in the host environment, its …

Governance Of The Governing: Accountability And Motivation At The Top Of Public Organizations, Donald Nordberg
Donald Nordberg
Developments in the governance practices in UK public organizations show how ideas from the governance of listed companies have translated into public sectors bodies, government departments and the governance of parliament itself. The use of independent, non-executives directors in public bodies encapsulates the tension in the private sector between the service role of directors and how they control the executives who manage the business. This paper gives a preliminary examination of three public bodies, comparing how reform of their governance mechanisms has affected tensions in accountability and director motivation. What is evident is that the changes involve greater emphasis on …
