An Optimal Procedure For The Resource-Constrained Project Scheduling Problem With Discounted Cash Flows And Generalized Precedence Relations, Bert De Reyck, Willy Herroelen Jan 1998

An Optimal Procedure For The Resource-Constrained Project Scheduling Problem With Discounted Cash Flows And Generalized Precedence Relations, Bert De Reyck, Willy Herroelen

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

In this paper, we consider the resource-constrained project scheduling problem (RCPSP) with discounted cash flows and generalized precedence relations (RCPSPDC-GPR). The RCPSPDC-GPR extends the RCPSP to (a) arbitrary minimal and maximal time lags between the starting and completion times of activities and (b) the non-regular objective function of maximizing the net present value of the project with positive and/or negative cash flows associated with the activities. To the best of our knowledge, the literature on the RCPSPDC-GPR is completely void. We present a depth-first branch-and-bound algorithm in which the nodes in the search tree represent the original project network extended …

An Empirical Model For Predicting The Feasibility Of Corporate Turnaround, Syed Kamalludin Bin Syed Alaudin Al Qadiri Jan 1998

An Empirical Model For Predicting The Feasibility Of Corporate Turnaround, Syed Kamalludin Bin Syed Alaudin Al Qadiri

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The primary objective of this research was to identify the determinants of corporate turnaround feasibility and their effect (in terms of their state of existence and their existence) on the probability of corporate turnaround feasibility in Successful and Non Successful Turnaround Companies. The other objective was the development of an empirical model of the determinants of corporate turnaround feasibility capable of predicting the feasibility of corporate turnarounds. One hundred 'troubled companies ' were identified out of two hundred and eleven publicly listed companies of the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange through observations of their share price performance, earnings before interest and …

Hardiness And Job Fitness For The Intensive Family Preservation Specialist: A Correlational Study, Sandi Fisher Jan 1998

Hardiness And Job Fitness For The Intensive Family Preservation Specialist: A Correlational Study, Sandi Fisher

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

It is costly to train the counselors who serve in intensive Family Preservation Services (IFPS). The hiring agency must pay for traveling expenses in addition to any fee paid for training. When an IFPS worker chooses to terminate employment before the end of two years of employment, this puts a strain on an already tight budget. This problem could be alleviated by finding an efficient pre-hire screening instrument. The three personality traits described in Hardiness Theory literature: commitment, challenge, and control, are traits often used to describe the ideal IFPS worker. This study assessed IFPS workers to determine if the …

Groupwork In Business, Michelle Laird Jan 1998

Groupwork In Business, Michelle Laird

Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)

The purpose of this article was to review studies concerning the effects of group design on groupwork in business. It begins with a short overview of definitions of work groups and group phenomena, and follows with a literature review of the effects of size, group goals, sharing of information, diversity, gender, age, individual differences, familiarity among members, and techniques on decision making effectiveness. Next, difficulties and possible solutions are covered and finally, types of work groups used today are discussed. It has been found that there is no one team design that makes a team most effective. The most appropriate …

Retention Of Administrators In Nursing Homes: What Can Management Do?, Douglas A. Singh, Robert C. Schwab Jan 1998

Retention Of Administrators In Nursing Homes: What Can Management Do?, Douglas A. Singh, Robert C. Schwab

Faculty Publications

Annual turnover among nursing home administrators may be 40% or higher. To investigate the factors that could lead to greater administrator retention, responses to a survey (53% response rate) were analyzed using factor analysis and multiple regression models. Results show that higher retention is observed when administrators are allowed to function independently, are involved in decision making, are treated fairly, and are given reasonable goals to achieve. Organizations must hire administrators whose values match theirs. Multifacility chain organizations and for-profit facilities appear to have a greater need to embrace organizational principles that lead to greater job satisfaction.

Can Internet Offerings Bridge The Small Business Capital Barrier?, Jill E. Fisch Jan 1998

Can Internet Offerings Bridge The Small Business Capital Barrier?, Jill E. Fisch

All Faculty Scholarship

Internet technology offers the potential to reduce the search and information costs associated with capital formation. Commentators have suggested that the Web will enable small business to achieve better access to the capital markets. To facilitate this access, they have suggested regulatory reforms to make internet offerings cheaper and easier. At the same time, small business offerings have been identified as among the most risky, offering a caution to those who counsel regulatory reform. This article examines the existing regulatory climate. State and federal regulators have adopted a number of recent reforms to facilitate the use of the internet and …

To Develop And Implement A Quality Assurance System Based On Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (Haccp) To A Cook-Freeze Operation: Research Project, Denisa Baca Jan 1998

To Develop And Implement A Quality Assurance System Based On Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (Haccp) To A Cook-Freeze Operation: Research Project, Denisa Baca

Theses : Honours

The purpose of this study was to identify and develop a suitable quality assurance system based on Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP), which was implemented to the ‘cook-freeze' operation, currently employed at Healthcarc Foods. In addition, the quality assurance system was implemented as a systematic approach to food quality, and as a means of ensuring food safety. The samples, which consisted of all the chicken dishes, were used in the development of the HACCP plans comprising of flowcharts and HACCP control charts. These dishes are regarded as 'high risk', in terms of microbiological growth, and therefore, were chosen to …

Managing For Flexibility: A Manufacturing Perspective, Ravi Kathuria Jan 1998

Managing For Flexibility: A Manufacturing Perspective, Ravi Kathuria

Business Faculty Articles and Research

This paper investigates managerial practices that are conducive to the management of flexibility. Using data from manufacturing plants in the United States, this paper identifies managerial practices that manufacturing managers strongly demonstrate in plants that place a high emphasis on flexibility. The results indicate that managers who pursue flexibility, emphatically engage in team building, employee empowerment, and other relationship oriented practices that generate enthusiasm among employees. These practices seemingly motivate workers to deal with the uncertainty and changes, in the form of product mix, customer delivery schedule, capacity adjustments, etc., that characterize manufacturing flexibility. Furthermore, workers are entrusted with the …

The Tqm Paradox: Relations Among Tqm Practices, Plant Performance, And Customer Satisfaction, Thomas Choi, Karen Eboch Dec 1997

The Tqm Paradox: Relations Among Tqm Practices, Plant Performance, And Customer Satisfaction, Thomas Choi, Karen Eboch

Karen Eboch

We empirically examine a mediational model of TQM, in which TQM practices have a direct impact on customer satisfaction and an indirect impact mediated through plant performance. We adopt a survey approach using the data from 339 manufacturing companies. We first establish convergent validity, discriminant validity, and reliability of the constructs. We then examine the model using LISREL 8.10. The results suggest paradoxical relations among TQM practices, plant performance, and customer satisfaction. TQM practices have a stronger impact on customer satisfaction than they do on plant performance. Further, the plant performance, as described in the mediational model, fails to show …
