When The Past Comes Knocking: An Alter-Centric Perspective On Network Mobilization In Prosocial Occupations, Jason Ross Jan 2023

When The Past Comes Knocking: An Alter-Centric Perspective On Network Mobilization In Prosocial Occupations, Jason Ross

Theses and Dissertations--Management

Networks are vital to our ability to access resources. However, scholars have often overlooked just how social networks are mobilized. Underexplored in the literature is how individuals think and feel about mobilizing networks with little attention directed towards the person (alter) being reached out to. In this dissertation, I use a basic, interpretive design to better understand how people think and feel about receiving requests for task-related help, paying particular attention to when those requests originate from people from one’s past. To do so, I conducted interviews with 40 animal rescuers given their passion for helping, but their inability to …

Factors Influencing Hard Running Distances In Ncaa Division I Female Soccer Players, Isaac A. Sam

Dissertations and Theses

As the total distances covered in soccer games have remained relatively constant, the hard running distances covered by players have shown varying changes due to the higher physical demands and dynamics of team running performances. Although factors affecting the total distances covered in a match are multifactorial, no study has specifically examined match performance indicators (MPI) that impact hard running distances (HRD). Consequently, the purpose of this study was to better understand how MPI (hard running efforts, turnovers, minutes played, duels won, duels lost, and pass completions) are associated with HRDs and to investigate how each variable contributes to HRDs …

Can Gamification Increase Work Motivation? Considering The Job Characteristics Model And Employee Attitudes Towards Games., Richard A. Oxarart

Gamification, or the use of game elements in the working environment, is becoming more prevalent in the workplace. These elements, such as badges, points, levels, fictional narratives, leaderboards, and others have been being used in industry due to their assumed motivational properties. Though researchers have begun to investigate this assumption, there is still a lack of supporting empirical evidence. Furthermore, what research has been done has been met with mixed results. To do so, it examines stories told by students through thematic analysis to connect student experiences with symbols of the university. Focusing on these connections and …

Human Resource Management, Ernesto Manuel Escobosa Rivera Jan 2023

Human Resource Management, Ernesto Manuel Escobosa Rivera

Business ETD Collections

A clock requires every single, even the smallest piece of its’ machinery to perform the tasks that is meant to do in order to function correctly. If there is a piece that is not working properly, it can be the cause of the clock not working at all. This same premise can be applied to the work environment, viewing the organization as ‘’the clock’’ and employees as ‘’the machinery’’, performing tasks for the general functionality of the organization that could lead it to either success or failure. This is the reason why it is vital for any type of organization …

Essays In Household Finance, Morteza Momeni Jan 2023

Essays In Household Finance, Morteza Momeni

Theses and Dissertations--Finance and Quantitative Methods

In my first chapter, I use new granular loan-level data and a novel instrumental variable to estimate the effect of competition among auto dealerships on the joint pricing of cars and car loans. I find that increased competition causes auto dealers to decrease vehicle prices to attract consumers. They, however, offset a large portion of their loss on vehicle prices through charging higher prices on a less transparent margin (i.e., loan markups). Consistent with the monthly payment targeting channel, I find that increased competition does not change consumers' monthly payments. My findings suggest that sophisticated sellers such as auto dealers …

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Attempts to address wildfire risk and forest resilience have increased substantially over the last 20 years with specific interest in removing excess vegetation from stands, commonly referred to as “forest biomass”. During the COVID-19 recession, money supply changes did have an impact on stock returns, and had a positive relationship with …

The Relationship Between Digitalization, Co 2 Emissions, And Financial Development, Morgan Larick Jan 2023

The Relationship Between Digitalization, Co 2 Emissions, And Financial Development, Morgan Larick

Senior Honors Projects

This paper first examines the relationship between digitalization and CO 2 emissions to test the inverted U-shaped relationship predicted by the Environmental Kuznets Hypothesis. The results using the fixed effects, two-stage least squares, and generalized method of moments estimation coincide with this inverted U-shaped relationship suggesting that increases in digitalization increase CO 2 emissions up to a certain threshold of digitalization and then decrease it. An interaction term with financial development was then included in the model to determine the role that it plays in this inverted U-shaped relationship. Overall, results indicated that there is no strong evidence that financial …

Theses and Dissertations

Workforce diversity continues to expand in organizations across the United States and globally. However, organizations struggle to retain and maintain diverse representation in the workforce. The focus for organizations to ensure they have an established success model for underrepresented populations, specifically ethnic minorities, is a critical strategy for organizations seeking to maintain diverse workforce representation and cultures. Ethnic minorities face many challenges to success, access to opportunities, and the same workplace experiences as their non-ethnic peers (Cole & Salimath, 2013). There have been steps taken to address the challenges created due to the inequities faced by ethnic minorities and underrepresented …
