The Exit Structure Of Venture Capital, D. Gordon Smith Dec 2005

The Exit Structure Of Venture Capital, D. Gordon Smith

Faculty Scholarship

Venture capital contracts contain extensive provisions regulating exit by the venture capitalists. In this Article, Professor Smith employs financial contracting theory in conjunction with original data collected from 367 venture-backed companies to analyze these exit provisions. He concludes that the combination of exit provisions in a typical venture capital relationship serves to lock venture capitalists into the investment during the initial stage. In later stages of the relationship, the venture capitalists acquire increasing control over exit by securing additional seats on the board of directors and by obtaining contractual exit rights. The result is a sophisticated transfer of control from …

An Evaluation Of Decision Tree And Survival Analysis Techniques For Business Failure Prediction, Adrian Gepp Dec 2005

An Evaluation Of Decision Tree And Survival Analysis Techniques For Business Failure Prediction, Adrian Gepp

Adrian Gepp

Accurate business failure prediction models would be extremely valuable to many industry sectors, particularly in financial investment and lending. The potential value of such models has been recently emphasised by the extremely costly failure of high profile businesses in both Australia and overseas, such as HIH (Australia) and Enron (USA). Consequently, there has been a significant increase in interest in business failure prediction, from both industry and academia. Statistical models attempt to predict the failure or success of a business based on publicly available information about that business (or its industry and the overall economy), such as accounting ratios from …

Estimating Demand For Business Recycling Services In Two Nebraska Cities, Eric Thompson, Mingming Pan, Cory Buland

Bureau of Business Research Publications

Creating opportunities for business recycling is an important priority for the State of Nebraska and communities throughout the state. In particular, there is a need to expand opportunities in smaller communities that do not always have the infrastructure or markets for recycling found in the state’s largest cities such as Omaha and Lincoln. With this in mind, the following report, sponsored by WasteCap Nebraska and the Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality, uses a survey of businesses to evaluate business attitudes toward recycling, current recycling efforts, and the level of need and interest for recycling training and services in two mid-size …

Far Reaches Of The Holiday Bowl Lineup, Richard C. Crepeau Dec 2005

Far Reaches Of The Holiday Bowl Lineup, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Several years ago the good people at the Miller Brewing Company put together the Miller Lite Survey of Sport in America. The survey, greeted by many with a roar of disbelief, found that bowling was the most popular participatory sport in the nation. We are now about to enter the Bowling Zone, a sixteen-day run of college football games with little or no meaning except to close family and friends of the participants, with a few notable exceptions. This is not the kind of bowling that was found in the Miller Lite Survey. These are not events featuring a hard …

Using Prospect Theory To Investigate Decision-Making Bias Within An Information Security Context, Neil J. Schroeder Dec 2005

Using Prospect Theory To Investigate Decision-Making Bias Within An Information Security Context, Neil J. Schroeder

Theses and Dissertations

Information security is an issue that has increased in importance over the past decade. In this time both practitioner and academic circles have researched and developed practices and process to more effectively handle information security. Even with growth in these areas there has been little research conducted into how decision makers actually behave. This is problematic because decision makers in the Department of Defense have been observed exhibiting risk seeking behavior when making information security decisions that seemingly violate accepted norms. There are presently no models in the literature that provide sufficient insight into this phenomenon. This study used Prospect …

Improving Community College Board Governance Using A Technology Based Board Management System, Teresa Walsh

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Higher education boards are turning to accountable board leadership and macroengagement discussions in lieu of traditional micromanagement of operations. The Policy Governance© model integrates unique principles designed to enable accountable board leadership. This paper describes an Action Research project that was conducted with the Board of Yavapai College. The Board adopted Policy Governance© but failed to practice its tenets. This research seeks to demonstrate whether a technology based board management system, OurBoardroom, that fully implements Policy Governance©, can assist the Board in the practice of the model. Findings indicate that the technology application that provides a template for all aspects …

Forgiveness For Lou Holtz And George O'Leary, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Forgiveness is a wonderful thing. Many saintly people through the years have espoused its practice. In sport, if you know where to look, you will find that forgiveness is extensively practiced. It can also pay dividends and in the calculus of the modern world that is all that really counts.

Taiwanese Consumers' Perceptions Of Luxury Handbags: The Country-Of-Origin Effect, Hsin-Tien Han Dec 2005

Taiwanese Consumers' Perceptions Of Luxury Handbags: The Country-Of-Origin Effect, Hsin-Tien Han

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios

The research on the effect of "country-of-origin" (COO) or "Made in.. ." label has attracted extensive attention from academic researchers and marketers for the past three decades. Moreover, the country-of-origin effect will be more progressively salient in the era of the global marketplace due to multinational companies who are seeking production in lower cost countries. Thus, considering the country-of-origin effect on consumers' perceptions of products becomes more important. This study is the first to examine the country-of-origin effect, and how it may possibly influence Taiwanese consumers' perception and purchase intentions when evaluating a luxury handbag.

The specific purpose of this …

Tourism Discretionary Spending Choice Behaviour, G. Crouch, Sara Dolnicar, T. Devinney, T. Huybers, J. Louviere, H. Oppewal Dec 2005

Tourism Discretionary Spending Choice Behaviour, G. Crouch, Sara Dolnicar, T. Devinney, T. Huybers, J. Louviere, H. Oppewal

Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)

Studies of tourism demand are numerous. But studies of how consumers apportion discretionary resources to tourism and across other competing categories of discretionary expenditure are non-existent. Therefore, how individuals and households make trade-offs between, or assess the respective utilities of, the various categories of discretionary expenditure and allocate discretionary financial resources, appears to be unknown. This study seeks to address this need by examining discretionary expenditure through choice experiments. The data provide insights into how each type of discretionary expenditure is valued and how each type competes for a share of the discretionary expenditure ‘pie’. We discuss the results with …

A Conceptual Model Of The Antecedents Of Behavioural Loyalty Of Dissatisfied Business Services Customers, Venkata Yanamandram, Lesley White Dec 2005

A Conceptual Model Of The Antecedents Of Behavioural Loyalty Of Dissatisfied Business Services Customers, Venkata Yanamandram, Lesley White

Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)

This paper presents a conceptualisation of the factors that lead dissatisfied business-to-business (B2B) customers to stay with their existing service providers. While studies in a B2B context have addressed some important barriers to switching, they have not discussed all of these, and not necessarily under conditions of dissatisfaction. A literature review of previous research, both theoretical and empirical, identified that a gap in the body of knowledge exists regarding the reason that dissatisfied customers are behaviourally loyal, and results from a previous qualitative study unearthed additional barriers that exist. Hence, this paper proposes a model of the deterrents to switching …

Understanding And Improving The Inefficiencies Of An Engineering Change Management System Using The Action Research Model, Allen L. Samson Dec 2005

Understanding And Improving The Inefficiencies Of An Engineering Change Management System Using The Action Research Model, Allen L. Samson

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

The change management system at a manufacturing company is a bottleneck to the new product release cycle, causing numerous product releases to be delayed resulting in lost revenue and financial impact to the business. The change management system was developed when the company was small. As the company grew, the change management system could no longer meet the demand placed on it. The action research model establishes the issues that have created the symptoms. Data collection and analyzes using value-stream mapping and questionnaires determines that the process is inefficient and does not have the capacity required to sustain new product …

Global Landscapes: A Speculative Assessment Of Emerging Organizational Structures Within The International Wine Industry, D. K. Aylward Dec 2005

Global Landscapes: A Speculative Assessment Of Emerging Organizational Structures Within The International Wine Industry, D. K. Aylward

Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)

As a rapidly evolving sector the international wine industry represents an interesting subject for analysis. Over the past two centuries the industry has experienced a number of major innovations and direction changes. The organizational shifts involved in these changes have been profound. From a monopolization of wine culture through the 19th and much of the 20th century by Europeans, to the emergence of New World operators and their democratic influence, the international wine industry now stands at the edge of another major paradigm shift. This paper traces the industry’s historical changes and speculates on the implications of such issues as …

Accounting For Us Regional Real Exchange Rates, Lein Lein Chen, Seungmook Choi, John Devereux Dec 2005

Accounting For Us Regional Real Exchange Rates, Lein Lein Chen, Seungmook Choi, John Devereux

CRIF Seminar series

We examine the relationship between the relative price of nontradables and real exchange rate movements for fixed exchange rate regimes. We have two findings. First we show that purchasing power parity holds strongly for tradables across US regions. As a result, nontradables play a central role in regional real exchange rate movements. Using BLS regional data, we find that changes in the relative price of nontradables explain up to eighty percent of regional real exchange changes over medium and long run horizons. Second, we show that nontradables can account for a large portion of real exchange rates changes internationally with …

Workplace Flexibility 2010: Facts On Short Term Time Off, Jean Flatley Mcguire, Kaitlyn Kenney

Memos and Fact Sheets

Short Term Time Off (STO) refers to job-protected time away from the workplace (generally 5 days or less) to address anticipated or unexpected issues of limited duration. STO may be scheduled or unscheduled, depending on the underlying need. STO enables workers to address the routine and emergency situations that occur in everybody’s lives.

The need for STO may arise, for example, because a worker or worker’s child is sick or has a routine doctor’s appointment, because a worker has to wait for the plumber or apply for benefits or go to court, or because a worker needs to attend a …

Vic Power Dies, Richard C. Crepeau Dec 2005

Vic Power Dies, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

On Tuesday Victor Pellot died at age 78. This may not mean all that much to many baseball fans, but if that sentence is modified to read, "On Tuesday Vic Power died at age 78," it would have considerably more meaning. Vic Power was a first baseman who came to North America from Puerto Rico in 1950 to play baseball. He started in Class D ball in Ontario and a year later was signed by the Yankee organization. In 1952 he was assigned to the Yankee farm team in Kansas City where he hit .331 and drove in over a …
