Developing A Quality-Of-Life Measure To Assess The Impact Of Community Services: The Case Of Australian Community Banks, Lester Johnson Dec 2007

Developing A Quality-Of-Life Measure To Assess The Impact Of Community Services: The Case Of Australian Community Banks, Lester Johnson

Lester Johnson

In this paper we report on findings of a study designed to develop and test measures suitable to assessing the perceived comparative contribution of Australian community banks and other more conventional banks to communities served, and the perceived impact of these banks on the well being and quality of life of individuals who reside in those communities. Findings reveal that perceptions of the contribution of community banks to the sense of community and individual well being are significantly more favorable than those of more conventional banks.

Bayesian Density Forecasting Of Intraday Electricity Prices Using Multivariate Skew T Distributions, Anastasios Panagiotelis, Michael Smith Dec 2007

Bayesian Density Forecasting Of Intraday Electricity Prices Using Multivariate Skew T Distributions, Anastasios Panagiotelis, Michael Smith

Michael Stanley Smith

Electricity spot prices exhibit strong time series properties, including substantial periodicity, both inter-day and intraday serial correlation, heavy tails and skewness. In this paper we capture these characteristics using a first order vector autoregressive model with exogenous effects and a skew t distributed disturbance. The vector is longitudinal, in that it comprises observations on the spot price at intervals during a day. A band two inverse scale matrix is employed for the disturbance, as well as a sparse autoregressive coefficient matrix. This corresponds to a parsimonious dependency structure that directly relates an observation to the two immediately prior, and the …

Reward For Environmental Performance: Using The Scanlon Plan As Catalyst To Green Organisations, Jacob A. Massoud, Bonnie F. Daily, James W. Bishop Dec 2007

Reward For Environmental Performance: Using The Scanlon Plan As Catalyst To Green Organisations, Jacob A. Massoud, Bonnie F. Daily, James W. Bishop

Jacob Massoud

Institutionalising, a reward system based on measurable performance and incentives for environmental improvements, serves as a potential mechanism to enhance a firm's environmental performance. Our main purpose is to integrate the principles of environmental management and the Scanlon Plan as a means to achieve this. Specifically, our paper advocates the utilisation of Scanlon Plan principles for environmental performance. The Scanlon Plan features (1) collectiveness and cooperation, (2) employee participation, (3) quantifiable performance and bonus measures and (4) an equitable reward system; all components that would enhance environmental performance.

Clinician Assessments Of Workplace Security Training - An Informatics Perspective, Juanita Fernando, Linda Dawson Dec 2007

Clinician Assessments Of Workplace Security Training - An Informatics Perspective, Juanita Fernando, Linda Dawson

Associate Professor Linda Dawson

This paper describes and analyses clinicians’ assessments of workplace privacy and security (PaS) training in the context of contemporary health information system (HIS) practice. The PaS training underpins national e-health frameworks. The paper draws on findings from a forthcoming dissertation. The ‘questerview’ technique was applied to this case study of 26 clinicians in three Victorian (Australia) public hospitals. The technique relies on data collection that applies standardised questions and questionnaires during interviews. Respondents were recorded while they completed the standardised questions and questionnaires and were encouraged to discuss their responses to items in detail. Data analysis involved the scrutiny of …

Islamic Banking And Finance: Moral Beliefs And Business Practices At Work, Karen Hunt Ahmed Dec 2007

Islamic Banking And Finance: Moral Beliefs And Business Practices At Work, Karen Hunt Ahmed

Karen Hunt Ahmed

The religion of Islam has existed for 1400 years but Islamic economic theory and its financial institutions emerged as an industry only in the 1970s. Islamic financial institutions (IFIs) are designed to help Muslims conduct business internationally while simultaneously upholding traditional Islamic values related to trade finance and currency movement. The basis for their existence is the Islamic moral prohibition on charging interest—interest is a central component of capitalist banking—yet IFIs conduct billions of dollars of business annually in the world economy and the de facto Islamic banking transaction is—in most cases—virtually identical to a capitalist banking transaction. Business practices …
