The Importance Of Language In International Knowledge Transfer, Lawrence Welch, Denice Welch Dec 2007

The Importance Of Language In International Knowledge Transfer, Lawrence Welch, Denice Welch

Lawrence Welch

Abstract &#; Drawing on insights from managerially-oriented literature, this article explores the role of management in situations where the market transaction costs of using local, independent operators are negligible at market entry, but grow over time. A key question pertaining to this situation is: what management instruments may ensure persistent concurrence between changing pressure for internalisation in a foreign market and the effectuated internalisation of a MNE in that market?

Key Results &#; The article demonstrates the operating cost saving potential of putting in place options for gradual internalisation. Practical examples of such options are outlined. &#; It is emphasized …

Models For Hospital Location And Capacity Allocation For An Area Prone To Natural Disasters, Jomon Aliyas Paul, Rajan Batta Dec 2007

Models For Hospital Location And Capacity Allocation For An Area Prone To Natural Disasters, Jomon Aliyas Paul, Rajan Batta

Jomon Aliyas Paul

This paper develops and analyses two basic models for hospital location and capacity allocation. The focus is on an area prone to natural disasters. The first model seeks to locate hospitals and allocate capacities so that the mean travel distance for patients to hospitals is minimised over a variety of disaster scenarios. The second model seeks to reallocate capacity among hospitals so as to maximise the system’s effectiveness to the upcoming disaster event. Heuristic solution methods of the two models are investigated, so as to make the approach computationally viable and to gain insight into the location and capacity allocation …

The Marketing Of Legal But Potentially Harmful Products And Csr: The Gaming Industry View, Lester Johnson Dec 2007

The Marketing Of Legal But Potentially Harmful Products And Csr: The Gaming Industry View, Lester Johnson

Lester Johnson

A number of industries sell products such as tobacco, alcohol and gambling that, although legal, are considered potentially harmful to some members of society. Unlike other products that attract no attention when using strategies to increase market share, many of these potentially harmful products attract criticism from concerned members of society and often governments when their markets increase. Corporate scandals in recent times have led to greater calls for social responsibility to be embraced by all businesses, but the call is most pronounced towards organisations providing products that are detrimental to certain members of society. This paper investigates gaming industry …

The Relationship Between New Work Practices, Trust And Unions, Carol Gill Dec 2007

The Relationship Between New Work Practices, Trust And Unions, Carol Gill

Carol Gill

This paper examines extant theory and empirical research on new work methods, employee voice, employee trust and unions to draw conclusions on the relationship between these constructs and make recommendations for future empirical research. It found that trust is an important antecedent of new work methods and that union collective voice when coupled with collaborative industrial relations enhances employee trust which facilitates the successful adoption of new work methods and delivers sustainable competitive advantage. This refutes the proposition that unions are a threat to productivity which leads management respond with union avoidance and suppression. This paper has implications for management …

How Unions Impact On The State Of The Psychological Contract To Facilitate The Adoption Of New Work Practices, Carol Gill

Carol Gill

This article draws together extant knowledge from the psychological contract, trust, union and new work practices (NWP) literature to develop a model on how union presence impacts on the effective adoption of NWP. It proposes that the strength of unions, coupled with the quality of industrial relations, determines whether unions will have a positive or negative impact on NWP. Unions can have a positive impact on the adoption of NWP by reducing the gap between management rhetoric and reality through employee voice and workforce stability. This builds trust between management and employees creating a virtuous cycle that can mitigate contract …

Emergent Negotiations: Stability And Shifts In Process Dynamics, Mara Olekalns, Laurie Weingart Dec 2007

Emergent Negotiations: Stability And Shifts In Process Dynamics, Mara Olekalns, Laurie Weingart

Mara Olekalns

Negotiation is a dynamic process in which negotiators change their strategies in response to each other. We believe mutual adaptation is best conceptualized as an emergent process and is a critical determinant of negotiators’ abilities to identify mutually beneficial solutions. We argue that two factors drive the process of negotiation and influence the quality of agreements: alignment of negotiators’ strategies across individuals (strategy sequences) and with the negotiation-wide dynamic (phases) and congruence of negotiators’ goals.

The Relationship-Service-Profit Chain: Conceptual Framework And Propositions, Lester Johnson Dec 2007

The Relationship-Service-Profit Chain: Conceptual Framework And Propositions, Lester Johnson

Lester Johnson

This paper proposes an expanded relationship-service-profit chain as a business success model based on a blending of human resource management and marketing within the relationship marketing framework. The proposed model draws on the original service-profit chain developed in the 90s by academics at Harvard, which is further enhanced through the addition of a relationship marketing orientation and combining internal marketing and human resource management activities to best implement an updated service-profit chain. The enhanced relationship-service-profit chain model is introduced as a plausible explanation for previous problems encountered in the service-profit chain literature and also to provide a point of reference …

It’S The Nature Of Work: Examining Behavior-Based Sources Of Work- Family Conflict Across Occupations., Erich Dierdorff, Kemp Ellington Dec 2007

It’S The Nature Of Work: Examining Behavior-Based Sources Of Work- Family Conflict Across Occupations., Erich Dierdorff, Kemp Ellington

Erich C. Dierdorff

The consequences of work–family conflict for both individuals and organizations have been well documented, and the various sources of such conflict have received substantial attention. However, the vast majority of extant research has focused on only time- and strain-based sources, largely neglecting behavior-based sources. Integrating two nationally representative databases, the authors examine 3 behavior-based antecedents of work–family conflict linked specifically to occupational work role requirements (interdependence, responsibility for others, and interpersonal conflict). Results from multilevel analysis indicate that significant variance in work–family conflict is attributable to the occupation in which someone works. Interdependence and responsibility for others predict work–family conflict, …

If You Pay For Skills, Will They Learn? Skill Change And Maintenance Under A Skill-Based Pay System., Erich Dierdorff, Eric Surface Dec 2007

If You Pay For Skills, Will They Learn? Skill Change And Maintenance Under A Skill-Based Pay System., Erich Dierdorff, Eric Surface

Erich C. Dierdorff

Although the use of skill-based pay has increased in popularity, empirical investigations of the effectiveness of this compensation strategy have been scarce. The fundamental premise of skill-based pay is that contingent monetary reward will promote individual learning. The authors empirically examine this essential principle with data spanning 5 years, using latent growth analysis. Results demonstrate that skill-based pay is related to individual skill change and maintenance. Whether or not individuals earn skill-based pay on their initial attempt is associated with subsequent rates of learning. In addition, the frequency with which skill-based pay is received and the total amount earned are …

Assessing Training Needs: Do Work Experience And Capability Matter?, Erich Dierdorff, Eric Surface Dec 2007

Assessing Training Needs: Do Work Experience And Capability Matter?, Erich Dierdorff, Eric Surface

Erich C. Dierdorff

Despite the crucial nature of needs assessment in training design and development, very little empirical work examining factors that influence such ratings has been undertaken. We investigated the impact of individuals’ levels of work experience, self-efficacy, and skill proficiency on their subsequent ratings of training needs. Our results indicate that self-efficacy and skill proficiency are positively related to importance and frequency ratings for both skills and job tasks. However, when considered collectively, skill proficiency was a more potent influence, suggesting that an individual’s actual capability may have a greater impact on ratings of training needs than his or her perceived …

Regional Signatures And Trends In The Farm Tourism Sector, Claudia Ollenburg Dec 2007

Regional Signatures And Trends In The Farm Tourism Sector, Claudia Ollenburg

Claudia Ollenburg

Farm tourism is an old phenomenon with new economic and social significance for farming, tourism and rural communities. Many features of the farm tourism sector are similar worldwide, but there are distinct regional differences. The portfolios of farm tourism products offered, in particular, differ significantly both between and within continents, producing regional signatures analogous to those in other sectors of the tourism industry. Farm tourism in Europe is recognizably different from farm tourism in North America. Within Europe, there are differences between the livestock landscapes and farmstays of the colder North and Alps, and the vineyard and olive landscapes of …
