Two Case Studies In Local Cable Renewal, George F. Burns
Two Case Studies In Local Cable Renewal, George F. Burns
Maine Policy Review
In October, 1992, Congress responded to consumer complaints about their cable rates and services by passing the Cable Television Consumer Protection and Competition Act of 1992. The numerous provisions of the new act were the subject of two, day-long workshops held in Portland and Orono last fall that were targeted to municipal officials. The workshops were jointly sponsored by the Margaret Chase Smith Center for Public Policy, the Maine Municipal Association and the Community Television Network of Portland. Three articles in this issue are excerpted from those presentations in an effort to both communicate and explain the important changes wrought …

At Western Kentucky University, the Library uses a Macintosh to filter and edit information on current serials to produce a periodicals guide for faculty and students. This tool has proven useful in collections development, reference and serials control within the Library. It has also provided the Library with a means to communicate to the academic community the extent of serials holdings in specific disciplines. Additionally, the Library has used the information within the guide to generate other lists of serials holdings for its patrons.
Nothing Recedes Like Success - Risk Analysis And The Organizational Amplification Of Risks, William R. Freudenburg
Nothing Recedes Like Success - Risk Analysis And The Organizational Amplification Of Risks, William R. Freudenburg
RISK: Health, Safety & Environment (1990-2002)
Professor Freudenburg believes that there is room for improvement in Risk analysis, particularly in drawing on systematic studies of human behavior in the calculation of real, empirical probabilities of failure. The need is argued to be especially acute where technological Risks are associated with low expected probabilities of failure and are managed by human organizations for extended periods of time. This permits complacency to set in.

A Model For Comparative Analysis Of Business Community Expectations Of Printing Companies And Printer Perceptions Of Those Expectations, Kevin Lloyd Hudson
A Model For Comparative Analysis Of Business Community Expectations Of Printing Companies And Printer Perceptions Of Those Expectations, Kevin Lloyd Hudson
Legacy ETDs
The problem of this study was to compare the Statesboro, Georgia business community's expectations of printing companies to the expectations printers perceive the businesses have. All of the local printers, and a sample of the local Chamber of Commerce corporate members (non-printers) were given identical survey forms which measured their expectations and perceptions. The forms were hand-delivered, picked-up the next day and tabulated to put the data in graphical form. A comparison of the two groups revealed some agreement and some disagreement in expectations and perceptions. After completing the study, it was determined that the research method is valid and …

The Manufacturing Contribution To Innovation, Arnoud De Meyer
The Manufacturing Contribution To Innovation, Arnoud De Meyer
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
The description of the contribution of manufacturing to the innovation process is often limited to the task of providing the necessary information to enable the development function to create a design which is easy to manufacture, and to be instrumental in the fast ramp-up of the production process. Though these are important tasks, it is argued in this paper that there is a third aspect of manufacturing’s contribution to innovation, namely the creation of a manufacturing system which is favorable to product innovation. This goes far beyond the design of an appropriate production process, but requires the creation of a …

Are Acquisitions A Poison Pill For Innovation?, Michael A. Hitt, Robert E. Hoskisson, R. Duane Ireland, Jeffrey S. Harrison
Management Faculty Publications
The recent wave of acquisition activity may be damaging the innovative capabilities of American firms, thus making them less competitive in the global marketplace. In fact, acquisitions often serve as a substitute for innovation, which may cause further neglect of internal research and development (R&D) programs. Additionally, acquisitions often lead to increases in leverage, diversification, and absorb significant amounts of executive time, which may lead to reduced managerial commitment to innovation.
In this article, evidence is presented suggesting that acquisition activity may result in reductions in R&D inputs and outputs. On average, the 191 firms in the sample reduced their …

Managing Expert Systems: A Framework And Case Study, Rob R. Weitz, Arnoud De Meyer
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
This paper addresses the problem of managing the development and implementation of a large expert system in an organization. A traditional systems analysis and design methodology is used as a framework to highlight similarities and differences in managing large scale traditional computer based projects and large expert systems. As a non-technical, prescriptive guide, this article focusses on defining at each stage in the project, the tasks to be accomplished, resources required, impact on the organization, likely benefits and potential problems. The case of a large expert system implemented by a multinational corporation across several European sites is used to clarify …

Method For Fabricating Or Modifying An Article Comprising The Removal Of A Polymer Coating, Bonnie Bachman, Elizabeth A. Hofstatter, Joan M. Ritter, Jerry J. Rubin
Economics Faculty Research & Creative Works
Disclosed is a method for removing poly-para-xylylene, its derivatives, and copolymers (collectively called "parylene") from bodies, including relatively large bodies such as printed circuit (PC) boards, that is capable of yielding relatively high removal rates. A body such as a PC board coated with parylene is placed into a reaction chamber downstream from a microwave plasma such that plasma discharge products generated by the microwave plasma react with the parylene, etching the parylene without exposing the body to bombardment by energetic ions and/or electrons. The plasma is generated from a gas mixture containing oxygen, a second gas, and optional additives …
Determination Of Adopter Categories By Using Innovation Diffusion Models, Vijay Mahajan, Eitan Muller, Rajendra Kumar Srivastava
Determination Of Adopter Categories By Using Innovation Diffusion Models, Vijay Mahajan, Eitan Muller, Rajendra Kumar Srivastava
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Using the analytical logic underlying the classical adopter categorization approach proposed by Rogers, the authors suggest that adopter categories for a product innovation can also be developed by using their well-established diffusion models such as the Bass model. With data on 11 consumer durable products, they compare adopter categories generated by the classical approach and the Bass diffusion model, respectively. An application examining the diffusion of personal computers is documented to illustrate the usefulness of the adopter categorization based on the Bass diffusion model in studying differences among adopter categories.

Pharmaceuticals And Intellectual Property: Meeting Needs Throughout The World, Thomas G. Field Jr.
Law Faculty Scholarship
To the extent that most people think about patents and other forms of intellectual property at all, they tend to be aware that the owners of such property may have the legal capacity to limit market entry--without fully appreciating the extent to which products or processes that can be easily copied might otherwise be unavailable. Focusing on their function in recouping risk capital, this article will survey the types and functions of intellectual property. Then it will attend to the situation in developing countries, particularly the role of intellectual property in meeting their needs for medical products.
The Knowledge Systems Transfer Project: A Multiple Perspective Investigation Into The Integration Of A New Technology Within A Business Unit, Steven Craig Tarr
The Knowledge Systems Transfer Project: A Multiple Perspective Investigation Into The Integration Of A New Technology Within A Business Unit, Steven Craig Tarr
Dissertations and Theses
Many organizations have been attempting to build a conceptual framework for managing technology, with varying degrees of success. Most begin by consulting leading technology authorities, borrowing elements of their thinking, and adapting these elements to their organizational and personal situations. This dissertation extends this process by using the formal research methodology of multiple perspectives (technical, organizational, personal, and cross-cuing) to build a case-based model of the technology integration process. The research and the model construction benefits from a solid foundation established through a review of technology management and knowledge systems literature. The significant aspects of the research are tied to …
