A Look At 20 Academic Libraries Technical Services Web Pages, Deana Groves

DLTS Faculty Publications

The 21st century technical services librarian has access to a plethora of electronic and online work tools from which to choose to complete daily tasks. An assessment of the Western Kentucky University Libraries 19 benchmark institutions shows a great disparity of online work tools made available through university libraries technical services departmental web sites. Four areas (technical services, cataloging, serials, and acquisitions) are discussed. Outcomes indicate that 1) few of these institutions list online work tools and 2) of those that do, there is very little overlap. This paper investigates this phenomenon of inconsistent technical services online work tools.

Resource-Based View Of Knowledge Management For Competitive Advantage, Leila A. Halawi, Jay E. Aronson, Richard V. Mccarthy

Publications

We are not only in a new millennium, but also in a new era: the knowledge era. Sustainable competitive advantage is dependent on building and exploiting core competencies. The resource-based view (RBV) of the firm defines a strategic asset as one that is rare, valuable, imperfectly imitiable and non-substitutable. Knowledge is seen as a strategic asset with the potential to be a source of competitive advantage for an organization. In this paper, we provide a model that examines how and why knowledge management (KM) can be sued to create competitive advantage from the RBV of the firm.

Research and development has always played a strategically important role in the survival and the growth of technology-based firms. R&D is positively linked to company performance measures such as sales, productivity and shareholder returns and in addition to this, facing increased competition, as a result of globalization the viability of many established firms is based on the efficiency of their R&D activities. Similar to other business models, R&D systems are characterized by complex structure and dynamic behavior. It's often difficult to predict or trace the consequences of certain decisions due to the existence of delays, non-linearities and causal feedback inherent …

Created' Enclaves For Enterprise: An Empirical Study Of Singapore's Industrial Parks In Indonesia, Vietnam And China, Caroline Yeoh, Siang Yeung Wong

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The dynamics of globalization have prompted governments to re-examine accustomed policies, and search for alternative strategies, in order to re-position their economies for the future. This paper explores the spatial context of state involvement in the new economics of competition, with the focus on Singapore's much publicized, and controversial, orchestration of its state enterprise network to encapsulate economic space for Singapore-based firms to expand into the Asian region. This strategic initiative is promulgated on the exportability of Singapore's æstate credibilityÆ, systemic and operational efficiencies, and technological competencies, to locations where these attributes are less certain. A logit model is applied …

Initial Interest Confusion: Standing At The Crossroads Of Trademark Law, Jennifer E. Rothman Oct 2005

Initial Interest Confusion: Standing At The Crossroads Of Trademark Law, Jennifer E. Rothman

All Faculty Scholarship

While the benchmark of trademark infringement traditionally has been a demonstration that consumers are likely to be confused by the use of a similar or identical trademark to identify the goods or services of another, a court-created doctrine called initial interest confusion allows liability for trademark infringement solely on the basis that a consumer might initially be interested, attracted, or distracted by a competitor's, or even a non-competitor's, product or service. Initial interest confusion is being used with increasing frequency, especially on the Internet, to shut down speech critical of trademark holders and their products and services, to prevent comparative …

Towards Semantic Service Request Of Web Service Composition, Qianhui Althea Liang, Jen-Yao Chung, Steven M. Miller

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

When meeting the challenges in automatic and semi-automatic Web service composition, capturing the user's service demand and preferences is as important as knowing what the services can do. This paper discusses the idea of semantic service requests for composite services, and presents a way to model the elements of a composite service request as user preferences and constraints. The model is based on an interactive and iterative strategy meant to obtain the exact requirements from potential service consumers. The markup vocabularies and associated inference mechanism of OWL-S are used as a means to bring semantics to service requests. Language constructs …

Poster Session A: Use Of Neural Networks In Multi-Sensor Fusion For Remote Sensing Applications, Engr. S. M. Haider Aejaz

International Conference on Information and Communication Technologies

Remote sensing encounters different types of objects with similar spectral signatures. Multi-sensors form the solution of the problem with spectral different parts of the spectrum and the resulting information is then processed using digital signal processing techniques. Artificial neural networks provide another method for processing this information. The research describes how neural networks may be used to classify objects on the basis of their spectral response to different frequencies.

Metaheuristic Applications And Their Solutions Quality, Dr. Zahid Hussain Aug 2005

Metaheuristic Applications And Their Solutions Quality, Dr. Zahid Hussain

International Conference on Information and Communication Technologies

Over the past few decades, a wide variety of classes of combinatorial problems (e.g. the assignment problem, the knapsack problem, the vehicle routing problem, etc.) have emerged - from such areas as management science, telecommunication, AI, VLSI design and many others. Many large combinatorial problems are NP-hard problems because of the combinatorial growth of their solution search space with the problem size. Such problems are commonly solved by some version of a prominent metaheuristic (e.g. Genetic Algorithms, Tabu Search, Simulated Annealing and etc.). These heuristics seek good but approximate solutions at a reasonable computational cost. These heuristics are of stochastic …

Real Time Object Tracking Using Bma, Zeeshan Hameed Khan, Muhammad Aurangzeb Aug 2005

Real Time Object Tracking Using Bma, Zeeshan Hameed Khan, Muhammad Aurangzeb

International Conference on Information and Communication Technologies

This paper describes real time object tracking using block matching algorithm (BMA). Emphasis is made on the development of techniques for tracking a user-selected object through digital image sequences in multimedia systems. The ability to track objects in sequences is useful in situations where the motion of objects is important. It is also useful when a moving object is difficult to see and needs to be highlighted. A tracking tool is also of benefit to the developers of a multimedia system to automatically 'mark up' a moving object so a user of the system can select it and manipulate it.
