The Australian Family Farm: Is It Soon To Be An Illusive Myth?, Fiona M.H. Mckenzie Jan 1996

The Australian Family Farm: Is It Soon To Be An Illusive Myth?, Fiona M.H. Mckenzie

Research outputs pre 2011

This paper examines the challenges faced by Western Australian rural enterprises since 1961 and the effects of economic and demographic change on the agricultural industry over the last thirty years.

Increasing capitalisation and technological advances have led to major shifts in the way the business of farming is conducted. There is evidence to suggest that these changes have contributed to an oversupply of agricultural products, the development of large-scale agri-business firms and a general depopulation of the agricultural sector.

The family farm has always been considered the backbone of Australian agriculture but there is evidence to suggest that in this …

A Comparative Review Of The Major Options For The Marketing Of Nigeria's Agricultural Commodities, M. O. Ojo, E. E. Inang, E. U. Ukeje

CBN Occasional Papers

The main aim of the paper is to critically review past commodity marketing systems in Nigeria, highlight some of the weaknesses which constrained their efficiency, as well as assess the performance of the present system and determine the advisability of retaining or modifying the present marketing arrangement. The performance of the Commodity Boards before their abolition in 1986 was adjudged unsatisfactory. However, since the abolition of the Boards, it has been observed that the new produce marketing arrangement has introduced some dynamism into commodity pricing as produce prices for the first time have been determined by the combined forces of …

Bautista, R.M. "Agricultural Growth As A Development Strategy." Economic Impact No. 66 Pp. 24-28 1989, L. I. Odey

Economic and Financial Review

In this paper, the author attempts a further exposition on the on-going debate on the feasibility of adoption of an export-led strategy of economic development which considers" Agriculture- first" as the engine of growth. The au~or strongly supports an agricultural-based development strategy because it is capable of generating mass employment, it is anti-poverty as well as being an hl.come redistribution programme. This strategy, he reasons, should be particularly appealing to countries with a heavy debt service burden since it is a foreign-exchange conserving programme given the lowerimporrrequirements of agricultural growth and itslinka, geeffectscompared with those of industry-led import substitution strategy. He …

Livestock production increased by 0.6 per cent in contrast to a decline of 0.7 per cent in the fourth quarter of 1989. Developments In The Agricultural Sector During The Fourth Quarter Of 1987, Central Bank Of Nigeria Cbn

Economic and Financial Review

With the emergence of the dry season and harmattan in most parts of the country, very little farming activity took place during the fourth quarter of 1987. Rather, some northern states, namely, Bauchi, Niger and Sokoto reported serious drought with grasshopper infestations which damaged thousands of hectares of farm crops. However, a total of 124,788 metric tonnes of fertilizers were distributed to farmers across the country in preparation for the next farming season. This figure represents a decrease of 41.6 per cent over the level in the preceding quarter.

Developments In The Agricultural Sector During The Second Quarter Of 1987, Central Bank Of Nigeria Cbn

Economic and Financial Review

The widespread concern expressed about possible adverse effects of late arrival of rains abated slightly towards the end of the quarter. This was because in the south, middle belt and sudan savannah regions, the level of rain allowed early crops like maize, yam, groundnut and vegetables to be planted, nurtured and in some cases harvested. In the northern parts of the country, especially the sahelian zones, farmers experienced their first rains which facilitated land preparation activities as well as plan ting, especially in Kaduna, Bomo and Sokoto states. A total of 130, 952.35 tonnes of fertiliser were discharged at the …

The Impact Of River Basin Development Authorities On Nigerian Agriculture: A Case Study Of Niger River Basin Development Authority, E. D. Balogun, E. U. Ukeje

Economic and Financial Review

The paper traced the history of water resource development in Nigeria, and assessed the impact of the Niger River Basin Development Authority (NRBDA) on crop production in the region. The analysis of available data showed that although the NRBDA's activities resulted in improvements in crop yields, and farm incomes of beneficiaries, the impact on regional output and area cultivated was marginal since it accrued to only very few farmers. Moreover, the cost of generating such increments was outrageously high when compared to the incremental costs incurred by alternative development institutions in respect of similar activities. The NRBDA was not without …
