Este ensayo intenta sintetizar las principales líneas de investigación sobre el género fantástico, y lleva a cabo un cotejo elemental de los puntos principales que derivan de las mismas. Los criterios de selección no responden necesariamente a un orden cronológico; más bien me interesa la dinámica de continuidad conceptual entre las diferentes hipótesis ya sea por afinidad o por divergencia. En ese sentido, el principio estructurador es la continuidad entre las diferentes posturas teóricas, y la relevancia de los aportes.

The Indigenous Archive: Religion And Education In Eighteenth-Century Mexico, Mónica Díaz

This article argues that eighteenth-century native elites played a significant role in the larger intellectual scene of colonial Mexico by participating in the same debates as their creole and European counterparts. I contend that the documentation produced by native elites related to the indigenous schools (colegios), convents, and seminaries during the eighteenth century provides an important context for understanding the ways in which knowledge circulated between natives, creoles, and Europeans. In addition, when this "indigenous archive" is read in tandem with more traditional historiographical native sources, we can better appreciate the indigenous roots of the dominant narrative of …

In 2007, Nuria Azancot published an article in the magazine El Cultural in which she identified a burgeoning group of Spanish writers that she referred to as the “Nocilla Generation.” The catalyst behind the article was a literary reunion that took place weeks before in Seville and brought together authors from all parts of Spain to talk about the status and future of writing. She described them as “transgressors” and “bloggers” who hybridized literary genres and held a revolutionary approach to the literary that was clearly marked by the Internet. This dissertation focuses on the representation of Ecuadorians in Spain between 2000 and 2015 in literature, film and the press. After enduring a decade of economic, climatic, and political problems, more than 175,000 Ecuadorians emigrated to Spain in 2001 alone (Herrera 2005). This process marked the beginning of a major migratory movement which has caused Spain to become a premier destination. The response to such migration has been disparate, yet both Ecuadorian and Spanish artists as well as the Spanish press have shown the different perspectives related to a discriminatory ideology. En este ensayo propongo una lectura de Manolo “el pijoaparte”, protagonista de Últimas tardes con Teresa de Juan Marsé, como revisión de la figura del pícaro. Para ello, mi análisis se centra, por un lado, en la construcción del personaje, y por otro, en su relación con el espacio urbano. Apoyándome en las teorías de Marc Augé y Michel de Certeau, sugiero que Últimas tardes con Teresa presenta un contraste entre la modernidad representada por Barcelona y la burguesía, y el pijoaparte, que a través de su itinerario por la ciudad, motivado por la aspiración social, muestra una actitud supermoderna.

Se propone una periodización de la vida y obra de Sábato en tres etapas bien definidas. Estas tres fases, instauradas en su formación intelectual, se bosquejan progresivamente, siguiendo un orden no estrictamente cronológico, sino equilibradamente estructurado por los siguientes temas o preocupaciones centrales de cada período: la ciencia, (1925-1955) la política (1956-1976) y la espiritualidad (1980-2011). La primera etapa, esbozada en el presente artículo, delimita su profundo rompimiento con el mundo de la razón instrumental y el abandono de su carrera científica, proyectado en su libro de ensayos Uno y el Universo.

In the novel Una holandesa en América (A Dutchwoman in America), Soledad Acosta (1833-1913, Bogota, Colombia) traces the journey of a young woman, Lucía, to America. Acosta uses literary models such as the Bildungsroman and the chronicles of European travelers to explore women’s place in society of her time and the question of European modernity against American “barbarism” in the context of national construction. As most of the speeches around this topic are from men, Acosta offers a different point of view in the debate and puts into question-established ideas.

During the period of military government in Argentina, Brazil (1964 –1982) and the present day communist Cuban regime, a machinery of cultural repression was established in these countries, these states had a systematic plan of cultural repression of any kind of opposition, dictatorships had an organized and sophisticated operating control over the press and all publications. The dissident writers examined in this dissertation developed strategies of resistance that depended largely on allegory to carry their messages against their respective oppressive regimes. This dissertation analyzes the representations of immigrants from North Africa, Latin America, and Eastern Europe in Spain. As engaged scholarship, it seeks to better the portrayal of immigrants in the mass media through the study of literature, film, and music about immigration spanning from the year 2000 to 2016. Because misconceptions continue to propagate in the media, this dissertation works to counteract anti-immigrant, xenophobic representations as well as balance out overly positive and orientalized portrayal of immigrants with a call to recognize immigrants as human beings who deserve the same respect, dignity, and rights as any other citizen.

The articulation of Portuguese nasalized vowels poses some articulatory problems accompanied by negative acoustic effects for the performance of Brazilian art songs. The main objective was to find strategies that permit the singer to conciliate an idiomatic pronunciation of these vowels with a well-balanced resonance, a desirable quality in classical singing. This dissertation analyzes selected pieces of work related to the Spanish Civil War (1936-39) produced during the twenty-first-century as cultural artifacts to be considered in their historical and socio-political context. Specifically, my dissertation focuses on the relationship between the way the conflict is depicted and the message it conveys. This dissertation explores myth-making in Latin America by focusing specifically upon four Amerindian and mestizo figures: Doña Bárbara, mestiza protagonist of Rómulo Gallegos’ 1929 novel; Anacaona and Hatuey, Taíno caciques who first appeared in Bartolomé de las Casas’ Brevísima relación de la destrucción de las Indias (1552); and Andrés Chiliquinga, indigenous protagonist of Jorge Icaza’s Huasipungo (1934).
