Gastronomy And Otherness In Alphonso X’S Works: Food Identities In Cartography, Dianne Burke Moneypenny Jan 2011

Gastronomy And Otherness In Alphonso X’S Works: Food Identities In Cartography, Dianne Burke Moneypenny

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

This thesis investigates Alphonso X's General Estoria, Estoria de Espanna, Cantigas de Santa María, Siete Partidas, and other writings in the alphonsine corpus to illustrate the concept of classification through diet. The work of this thesis is to reveal the gastronomic connections between central and peripheral relations in cartography. Through food symbolism and dietary behaviors, cuisine functions as the purveyor of an unrivalled sketch of a text’s characters and the social conditions of the text’s production. Once unraveled, these highly socialized norms of consumption confirm that diet and identity are inextricably linked and lead to a greater understanding of medieval …

Mythology In The Middle Ages: Heroic Tales Of Monsters, Magic, And Might, Christopher R. Fee Jan 2011

Mythology In The Middle Ages: Heroic Tales Of Monsters, Magic, And Might, Christopher R. Fee

Gettysburg College Faculty Books

Myths of gods, legends of battles, and folktales of magic abound in the heroic narratives of the Middle Ages. Mythology in the Middle Ages: Heroic Tales of Monsters, Magic, and Might describes how Medieval heroes were developed from a variety of source materials: Early pagan gods become euhemerized through a Christian lens, and an older epic heroic sensibility was exchanged for a Christian typological and figural representation of saints. Most startlingly, the faces of Christian martyrs were refracted through a heroic lens in the battles between Christian standard-bearers and their opponents, who were at times explicitly described in demonic terms. …

A Tale Of Two Kings: The Use Of King David In The Chronicle Of Pere Iii Of Catalonia, Marrissa Lynne Cook Jan 2011

A Tale Of Two Kings: The Use Of King David In The Chronicle Of Pere Iii Of Catalonia, Marrissa Lynne Cook

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Pere III of Catalonia (1319-1387) began his reign in 1336. As count-king, he reigned over Aragon, Catalonia, and Valencia. The Chronicle of Pere III of Catalonia covers the years 1319-1369, fifty years of a nearly seventy year life. Pere wrote this chronicle in collaboration with his chancery office. Bernat Descoll was the main contributor from the chancery, and he consulted with the king as he wrote it. The chronicle reflects spiritual justifications for actions that occurred during Pere's reign, such as his conflict with the Uniòns of Aragon and Valencia, as well as his conflict with Pedro I of Castile. …

Das Sakramentar Von Beauvais: Vollständige Faksimile-Ausgabe Der Handschrift Ms. Ludwig V 1 Aus Dem J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles, Elizabeth Teviotdale

Elizabeth C Teviotdale

A facsimile of a ten-leaf fragment of an illuminated sacramentary. The commentary includes a close examination of the object itself (physical properties, text, writing, and painting), considers the fragment's place in the oeuvre of the main scribe, and evaluates the artistic comparanda. A new understanding—anticipated in the work of Guy Lanoë—of the probable circumstances of the manuscript's creation is offered: that the sacramentary was made almost certainly at the behest of Roger, bishop of Beauvais from 998 to 1016, for his cathedral church of Saint Peter.

The Eternity Of The World And Renaissance Historical Thought, William J. Connell Dec 2010

The Eternity Of The World And Renaissance Historical Thought, William J. Connell

William Connell

This essay suggests that the Renaissance revolution in historical thought was encouraged by contemporary debates over the Aristotelian-Averroistic doctrine of the eternity of the world. In the early Renaissance eternalism came to be understood as a proposition with controversial consequences not only for the creation of matter e nihilo but also for the record of historical time. Modern scholarship, following Momigliano, believes that understandings of time had little effect on the practice of ancient historians. But that was not the view of Orosius, the most widely read historian during the Middle Ages, who condemned the pagan historians for their eternalism. …

Sacrilegi E Spazi Sacri E Profane: Ebrei E Cristiani In Polonia D’Età Moderna, Magda Teter

Magda Teter

As late as the 1926, and perhaps even up to the eve of World War II, on Fridays, in a small church on the Jewish street, a few meters off the main market square in the city of Poznań, the traditional song Kyrie Eleison, God Have Mercy, Christ Have Mercy, was replaced by a song on Jewish desecration of the host in Poznań in 1399. It was a legend, for there is no record of the case; no court room drama, for the trial never took place. The drama was elsewhere: the set was the city, its geography, and its …

Malory's Morgan Le Fay: The Danger Of Unrestrained Feminine Power, Marylynn Saul Dec 2010

Malory's Morgan Le Fay: The Danger Of Unrestrained Feminine Power, Marylynn Saul

Medieval Feminist Forum: A Journal of Gender and Sexuality

The medieval fear of witches (who were perceived as primarily women) contradicts the idea of female powerlessness. Since medieval society believed powerful women were unnatural, and if they did have power would use it to the detriment of men, medieval witchcraft theories, such as presented in the Malleus Maleficarum, employed various rationales to deny the possibility that witches could alter God’s creation. That it was possible for women to have power could not be denied since a few medieval women did acquire power, including political power. The intensity of the denials of female power and the often convoluted rationales employed …
