21st Century Ecopoetics (Selected Topics In Literature And Science), Robert Balun
21st Century Ecopoetics (Selected Topics In Literature And Science), Robert Balun
Open Educational Resources
Ecopoetics is the study of literature that is concerned with ecology and nature. However, beyond just literature about nature, this course will examine how ecology and nature have become complicated in the 21st century, the age of the Anthropocene, the age of the climate crisis and the 6th mass extinction (don’t worry, we will define these and other key terms).
In the 21st century, humans are now confronted with a growing awareness of their destructive impact on the earth, its environments, and its human and non-human inhabitants. In this class we will examine how ecology and nature have become complicated …

Fair World 64: A Text-Based Game Of The 1964–1965 World's Fair, Christofer R. Gass
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The project is a text-based game of a typical day during the first season of the 1964 World’s Fair in what is now Flushing Meadows-Corona Park. The 1964-1965 World’s Fair, that Robert Moses presided over as president, was one of the largest and most expensive fairs ever created, but only days after the last fairgoer left through the turnstile most of the many pavilions that brought education, entertainment, and joy to so many people were destroyed to leave a vast open space that is relatively empty to this day. Although most of the pavilions were either relocated or demolished, there …

Dear Black Child: A Discussion On The Formation Of Identity For African Diasporic Adolescents In The U.S., Sokhnagade B. Ndiaye
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
In this capstone project, I am using art, photography, and music to depict the experiences of African diasporic youth in the United States. I will explore the white supremacist systems that contribute to the anxiety that comes with being a black child in America. In this project, I plan to discuss the ways in which African diasporic adolescents develop their identity and consciousness and the ways in which living in American society helps and/or hinders the development of this identity and consciousness. I argue that living in the United States forces black youth to form double and triple consciousnesses, which …

The Collaborative Urban Resilience Banquet, Or @The_C_U_R_B, Candace B. Thompson
Theses and Dissertations
The Collaborative Urban Resilience Banquet (The C.U.R.B.) is an interdisciplinary art project consisting of citizen science experiments, community events, and social media storytelling that collectively examine critical issues of environmental, social, and food-based justice as we face oncoming climate crisis. The project explores lessons learned about/with/from Brooklyn's feral edible plant and animal species, many of whom have long and complicated relationships with humanity. Artist Candace Thompson of The C.U.R.B. forages and processes these beings into food and medicine, and conducts DIY remediation experiments with them in an attempt to mitigate any contamination found therein. She shares her fndings via an …
The Object Memory Palace, Amra Causevic
The Object Memory Palace, Amra Causevic
Theses and Dissertations
I am interested in orchestrating instances of potentiality or concrete possibilities that proposes the futurity of play through means of touch, activation, assembly, and interaction within art spaces. The installation mentioned is composed of found objects and repurposed materials that address themes of place, memory, object-ness, and the archive, through gestural means of poetics and map making. It is an invitation to create new logics and find moments of empathy, connectivity, and hopes for a collective.
Redefining Gender & Gender Expression Through Self-Perceptions & Self-Reflections, Deborah O. Ade
Redefining Gender & Gender Expression Through Self-Perceptions & Self-Reflections, Deborah O. Ade
Publications and Research
As societies evolve policies are developed to recognize and formalize these changes. One current context for change is New York City and the concept that has undergone significant change is gender. Many individuals no longer identify with the traditional binary distinction of male or female. Subsequently, new gender categories have emerged (e.g., bi-gender, pan gender, androgynous). Indeed, a total of 31 gender categories have been recognized by the NYC Commission of Human Rights. The goal behind this acknowledgement is to encourage equitable treatment and respect of all individuals within the workplace. NYC businesses that do not accommodate individuals identifying with …
Don't Forget Me, I Can't Hide It, Thomas H. Morrill
Don't Forget Me, I Can't Hide It, Thomas H. Morrill
Theses and Dissertations
Memory, technology, and space are the metaphorical and material players in my work. The video represents an emerging consciousness stuck in a nostalgia-laced, self-referential, emotive loop. It weighs the probability of its experience of life as solipsism. The walls are facsimiles of walls.

It's About Time: Open Educational Resources And The Arts, Ian Mcdermott
Publications and Research
The price of textbooks and other learning materials hinder students’ ability to pursue higher education. Open educational resources (OER) provide one answer to this problem. Though well established in STEM disciplines, OER are less common in art history and other arts courses. The College Art Association (CAA) and the Art Libraries Society of North America (ARLIS/NA) hosted panels on OER at their 2019 annual conferences. This article summarizes those panels and analyzes the speakers’ experiences within the context of OER initiatives in higher education.

Breast Dressing: A Critical Review Of Post-Surgical Bras, Adi Sieradzki
Breast Dressing: A Critical Review Of Post-Surgical Bras, Adi Sieradzki
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Breast cancer is acknowledged in the United States as a phenomenon. With more than 3 million women either diagnosed or treated for it as of 2019, it is a seminal part of the American healthcare map. However, the market for the kinds of bras and bandages patients have to wear after surgery remains mostly overlooked and outdated. This thesis aims to explore what it means to bandage or dress a breast that has been altered either in combative or cosmetic procedures. Why post-surgical wound care for breasts still mostly looks like a sports bra? How do breast cancer patients rehabilitate …

Assessing Undergraduate Fashion History Research Via Content Analysis, Justine De Young
Assessing Undergraduate Fashion History Research Via Content Analysis, Justine De Young
Art History Pedagogy & Practice
Undergraduate art history students are often asked to write research essays on specific artworks, but that research is rarely considered publishable or reliable. This article analyzes undergraduate student essays on fashion history to determine whether the research produced can be considered reliable according to generally accepted art historical standards. It employs content analysis to make those determinations in addition to the instructor's own standards and those governing the Fashion History Timeline, an open-access hub of fashion history research. The article investigates the impact of a multi-stage writing and revision process on student writing outcomes and on student grades. Finally, it …
Understanding The Student Perspective Of Art History Survey Course Outcomes Through Game Development, Joshua Yavelberg, Kelly Donahue-Wallace
Understanding The Student Perspective Of Art History Survey Course Outcomes Through Game Development, Joshua Yavelberg, Kelly Donahue-Wallace
Art History Pedagogy & Practice
This heuristic, design-based research study examines student perceptions of their learning experience in the art history survey course as manifested through a game design process. With the purpose of improving upon the lecture model of the standard art history survey, two sections of a capstone class of interdisciplinary art and design students—who had all taken the survey as part of their degree programs—selected learning objectives and designed games to accompany the introductory class. The researchers used the game design process to understand first how students perceived the survey class, its learning objectives, and the students’ experiences. Then the investigation addressed …

What do we take with us? How much space should we leave in the bag for what we might find? This paper is a journey from under the rug and onto the pavement. Sowing spiderweb maps I try to make a new city my own.
The Potency Of Emptiness, Kennedy L. Bailey
The Potency Of Emptiness, Kennedy L. Bailey
Theses and Dissertations
I investigate language and neurology by integrating intangible personal experiences with painted manifestations of rupture within structures. I utilize a hyperbolic translation of white and black to investigate the dismantling of a structure as an explicit quotation of space, matter, existence, and mind.
Turning And Turning, Nicola Stephanie
Turning And Turning, Nicola Stephanie
Theses and Dissertations
This paper explores Nicola Stephanie’s works in painted and shaped canvas, which investigate sensation and visual awareness of motion. Inspired partly by clothing forms, her vocabulary of color, shape and surface articulates a sense of the body and its boundaries. These spatial drawings evoke perceptions of gravity, rotation and orientation.

I explore the interlacing macro and micro implications of capitalism on interpersonal relationships. In an attempt to reconcile that problem I use storytelling, painting, and performance to imagine radical futures when love safety and abundance are easier to access.
Feminism And The Staged Uncanny, Jessica C. Mensch
Feminism And The Staged Uncanny, Jessica C. Mensch
Theses and Dissertations
In my Thesis, I work towards a new definition of the uncanny and show the transformation of its sense in the modern period. I will then show how this transformed sense appears in the media of mechanical reproduction—stage theatrics, photography and film—and, then, specifically in my art practice.

Excavating A Future Vision Past: Mike Davis’ City Of Quartz, William Blick
Excavating A Future Vision Past: Mike Davis’ City Of Quartz, William Blick
Publications and Research
When Mike Davis published City of Quartz in 1990, his work was widely praised by many and dismissed as liberalist hysteria by others. The reflections it contains on architectural design as a reflection of sociopolitical tumult still strike chords today. This article sets out a reexamination of the text through hindsight, using contemporary and subsequent reviews to consider how the book was relevant at the time of its publication, how it may be relevant today and how it has had a profound impact on sociological and cultural studies.
The Modern Formulation Of Chinese Art History And The Building Of A Nation In Early Twentieth-Century China, Chennie Huang
The Modern Formulation Of Chinese Art History And The Building Of A Nation In Early Twentieth-Century China, Chennie Huang
Dissertations and Theses
At the dawn of the twentieth century, the Chinese formulation of art history underwent dramatic changes. It moved away from the traditional narratives that did not follow a strict chronology to adopt the Western linear model which emphasizes progress and national identity. Based on the premodern tradition, the modern formulations of Chinese art history began as a political strategy for nation building amid the political upheavals, including military attacks on China that led to the end of Qing imperial rule and the beginning of the Republican era (1912-1949).

Carousel: Performance And Ritual Of A Child's Play, Erik Maniscalco
Carousel: Performance And Ritual Of A Child's Play, Erik Maniscalco
Theses
Carousel is a series of oil paintings inspired by my seven year old
daughter, as well as my work towards becoming a childhood educator. My
aim with this project is to explore the performative and ritualistic nature of
children’s play: focusing on the creative ways children stretch and reshape
their reality through imagined play narratives. Upon the carousel’s stage,
children select a character and take part in a performed ritual. I’ve long felt
connected to the visual vocabulary found within baroque and renaissance
styles, and I am fascinated by the mixture of amusement, tradition,
religion, and distortion imbued within the …
