Social Media And Youth Protests: Facebook Use In Hong Kong's National Curriculum Debate, Celia Lam

Celia Lam

In the wake of the Arab Spring in 2010 and the successful Obama election campaign of 2008, the importance of social media in the communication processes surrounding protest movements and political strategies became highlighted. Facebook, Twitter and YouTube became platforms through which individual citizens shared political messages and organized collective action in the Middle East, while similar platforms were used by political organisations in the US to reach sections of society overlooked by mainstream campaign strategies. Studies of the use of social media have focused on the impact social media has on the democratic divide, its relevance as a means …

The Monster Of Wall Street, Michael A. Stanley Dec 2014

The Monster Of Wall Street, Michael A. Stanley

Michael A Stanley

The scathing social satire that is Bret Easton Ellis’ American Psycho uses a unique stream-of consciousness narrative that draws the reader into the text by way of a fascination with the narrator. Patrick Bateman, a wealthy and powerful Wall Street elite who divides his time between giving fashion advice and frequenting New York’s trendiest restaurants and clubs, also happens to be a delusional psychotic and ostensibly a serial killer. Jeffrey Ian Ross Ph.D.

Since the early 1980s, in addition to the increase in graffiti and street art in many urban contexts, a number of movies have been made that have either examined this phenomenon and the people who engage in this activity, or used graffiti and street art as a backdrop to tell a story. This article briefly reviews the scholarly literature that examines movies that portray criminals and criminal actions, and then analyzes seven American-produced fictional (drama) films using graffiti writers/artists as major characters and then draws generalizations about them. Although this is not a semiotic analysis of the films, to the …

'The Last Honest Film Critic In America': Armond White And The Children Of James Baldwin, Daniel Mcneil Dec 2014

'The Last Honest Film Critic In America': Armond White And The Children Of James Baldwin, Daniel Mcneil

Daniel McNeil

"McNeil draws on a genealogy of African American thought to demonstrate that, far from being an atavistic curmudgeon, Armond White's agitation against bloggers and amateur pundits represents an important and misunderstood voice in the current critic-audience debate. In a world flooded with unconsidered punditry, White --- and .... other writers influenced by James Baldwin --- remind us that artful critics consider it a public duty to respond to works of art honestly and to question the motives of other artists and critics" (Mattias Frey, Senior Lecturer in Film, University of Kent)
