The Sound Of Utah: The Presence Of Geographical Elements In Music Written About The State Of Utah, Kamia Walton Holt Jan 1997

The Sound Of Utah: The Presence Of Geographical Elements In Music Written About The State Of Utah, Kamia Walton Holt

Theses and Dissertations

Music is a by-product of place and time. Musicians have opportunities to use the idea of place in their music. Thus, music has regionally distinctive characteristics which reflect human perceptions of the physical environment. Artists of the past and present focus on geographical themes, and paint a picture of ‘place’ in their music. This thesis focuses on the music of a geographical location: Utah. Musicians wrote of Utah in hymns of the past, and contemporary musicians continue to write music about Utah. This thesis answers the questions: Is music characterized by geography? How have the local musicians been influenced by …

Leadership Development In Nongovernmental Organizations: Applying Theory To Developing Country Contexts, Benjamin L. Hartley Jan 1997

Leadership Development In Nongovernmental Organizations: Applying Theory To Developing Country Contexts, Benjamin L. Hartley

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

Leadership development in nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) is becoming increasingly important as many developing country leaders retire from their positions in these organizations. The growing number, size, and political influence of NGOs also indicate a need for closer analysis of NGO leaders and leadership. Built on a thorough review of three different approaches to leadership and case study analysis of leadership development programs, this paper presents a preliminary leadership development framework which addresses the challenges of accountability, leader transitions, and external environment leadership - three issues particularly salient in the NGO context. Ideas about how leadership development programs may be constructed …

Science Fiction: Rhetoric, Authenticity, Textuality And The Museum Of Jurassic Technology, Jeremiah Dyehouse Jan 1997

Science Fiction: Rhetoric, Authenticity, Textuality And The Museum Of Jurassic Technology, Jeremiah Dyehouse

Honors Papers

About two years ago I became interested in museums as rhetorical entities. I took a course at the Allen Memorial Art Museum where I got a sense of how arguments are created through the techniques of visual display, the socalled "informatics" of museum exhibition. In an art museum, however, these informatics are always bound into a relationship with the aura of the art object as artifact. In the context of a cult of art (an art museum?), the physical fact of an art object's existence can never be rhetorically negotiated. Even if nothing else is fixed, its physical presence acts …

Children On The Mormon Trail, Jill Jacobsen Andros Jan 1997

Children On The Mormon Trail, Jill Jacobsen Andros

Theses and Dissertations

Using first person, reminiscent accounts, this thesis examines children's lives on the Mormon Trail. It attempts to shed further light on the story of the Mormon Trail by sharing the perspectives of pioneers who crossed the plains as children. This study focuses on such issues as the children's impressions of the trail, their experiences on it, their duties, their family life, and the influence of religion. This study highlights the symbiotic relationship between children and the trail: children affected trail life and at the same time were affected by their experiences on the trail. Children shouldered responsibilites that were essential …

A Mormon Cultural Study Of Musical Preference, Alden L. Weight Jan 1997

A Mormon Cultural Study Of Musical Preference, Alden L. Weight

Theses and Dissertations

Music is an important yet relatively unnoticed part of the everyday world almost all of us take for granted. Whether in the car, watching television, shopping, at work or at home, even waking up in the morning or going to sleep at night, and so forth, music surrounds us, soothes us, disturbs us, and occasionally goes so far as to persuade us. Although music plays a significant role in many areas of life, its relationship to society is especially evident in the religious sphere. Therefore, the religious sphere is an ideal place to examine what music does and what it …

Learning From Lincoln, William Michael Treanor Jan 1997

Learning From Lincoln, William Michael Treanor

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

The most arresting aspect of Jack Balkin's thought-provoking paper about the consequences of fidelity to the Constitution is his use of Abraham Lincoln. Professor Balkin offers Lincoln as a prime example of someone blinded by fidelity to the Constitution. Lincoln's fidelity to the Constitution, Balkin tells us, allowed him to make a kind of peace with slavery, to think that it was "not so great an evil that it had to be abolished immediately." This is such a powerful point because, 130 years after Lincoln's assassination, we mourn him still. We mourn him because we miss his leadership, we miss …

An Examination Of The Intelligence Preparation For Operation Market-Garden, September, 1944, Steven D. Rosson Jan 1997

An Examination Of The Intelligence Preparation For Operation Market-Garden, September, 1944, Steven D. Rosson

Masters Theses

The Allied defeat at Arnhem, Holland in September 1944 marked the end of one of the most bold and audacious, ground and airborne operations ever undertaken. Many military historian have incorrectly labeled Operation MARKET-GARDEN an intelligence failure. This statement is true only in so far as the Allied intelligence structure failed to persuade their commanders to alter the planned invasion despite the voluminous intelligence data acquired. But did these commander have hidden agendas which made intelligence almost irrelevant?

The purpose of this research is to investigate the Allied, strategic and operational intelligence preparation for Operation MARKET-GARDEN and determine its adequacy. …

Standardization, Compromise, Or Specialization: A Content Analysis Of Magazine Advertisements In America And Taiwan, Yi-Fan Chen

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

When researchers studied standardization and specialization of advertising, most of them only focused on comparisons of the cultural influences of the advertisements across the different nations. Kahle, Beatty and Mager (1994) studied implications of social values for European community communications. Astroff (1994) (1994) studied the language culture use of women in advertising.

Huang (1995) studied the different cultural factors, such as norms and ethics, …

Tu Ru Or Not Tu Ru: Paired Syllables And Unequal Tonguing Patterns On Woodwinds In The Seventeenth And Eighteenth Centuries, Bruce Haynes Jan 1997

Tu Ru Or Not Tu Ru: Paired Syllables And Unequal Tonguing Patterns On Woodwinds In The Seventeenth And Eighteenth Centuries, Bruce Haynes

Performance Practice Review

RILM abstract:" Original source material on historical tongue-strokes describes "paired syllables", or double-tonguing, as contrasted to single-tonguing. Patterns place the accent on the first, second, or both parts of the pair. Double-tonguing uses a rebound motion to enhance the velocity of Articulation; it reinforces appropriate metrical patterns, but is more often used to achieve speed in extended (and therefore fatiguing) runs of quick notes. Descriptions of double-tonguings began in the early 16th c. and continued to ca. 1827, and were used in Italy, Germany, Holland, France, and England."
