How To Account For Externalist And Internalist Intuitions, Denise Yehnert '91
How To Account For Externalist And Internalist Intuitions, Denise Yehnert '91
Honors Projects
In his book The Structure of Empirical Knowledge, Laurence Bonjour criticizes advocates of externalist versions of foundationalism. According to Bonjour, "externalism reflects an inadequate appreciation of the problem at which it is aimed."l With this in mind, Bonjour sets out to argue that externalism is not an acceptable theory for the foundationalist to appeal to in his attempt to solve the regress problem. In order to avoid a complete stalemate over doctrine, Bonjour's attempt to argue that externalism is unacceptable proceeds as an appeal to intuition. As such he allows that"although this intuition may not constitute a conclusive objection to …

Introduction: Social Work And Philosophy, Roberta Wells Imre
Introduction: Social Work And Philosophy, Roberta Wells Imre
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
A journal issue unequivocally about philosophical concerns in social work is evidence of the recent progress we have made in the profession in recognizing the importance of philosophical commitments in social work activities. Awareness of the presence of these commitments and dissatisfaction with conventional social work resources for addressing them led to the organization of the Study Group for Philosophical Issues in 1985. The papers presented here have been contributed by members of this group, which is open to anyone interested in joining the conversation.

Belief And Rationality, Curtis Brown, Steven Luper-Foy
Philosophy Faculty Research
We have gathered here a collection of papers at a point of intersection between epistemology and the philosophy of mind. The essays in this collection illuminate the bearing of issues about rationality on a variety of themes about belief, including the relation of belief to other propositional attitudes, the nature of the subjects who have beliefs, the nature of the objects of belief, and the ways in which we attribute content to beliefs.

Charles Kingsley And The Book Of Nature, John C. Hawley
English
Stephen W. Sykes has written that theological "views are neither right nor wrong by being liberal in character. Only a church," he argues, "which has despaired of the possibility of rational argument about theology altogether could adopt such a stance."1 Yet Paul Avis has gone so far as to suggest that "Anglicanism enshrines a principle of reverent agnosticism. It takes seriously the limitations of our knowledge and readily confesses that our grasp of the truth is circumscribed by mystery, a light shining in the darkness."2 From the Cambridge Platonists and Jeremy Taylor, to Bishop Joseph Butler's Analogy of Religion, Natural …
