Responds to a recent article by Peter Shillingsburg (in Studies in Bibliography , 1991)on the taxonomy of authorial revision or textual versions, arguing that for critical, biographical and historical study the editor (and interpreter) is constrained in the choice of variant by the purpose for which the text is being used. Examples are drawn from Victorian authors, including Alfred Tennyson, specifically the versions of Maud, and John Henry Newman, specifically successive versions of what became The Idea of the University. Originally presented at a symposium on Shillingsburg's article at the Textual and Bibliographical Studies Section, South Atlantic Modern …

Discusses the vocabularies in which literary critics since Matthew Arnold have described writing about place ("local," "regional," "national," "cosmopolitan," "peripheral," "central," "universal," "parochial," and "provincial"), and the differing perspectives of writers from Wordsworth to Thomas Hardy, to argue that the Victorian recognition of and ambivalence about provinciality is of lasting significance for understanding cultural identity in complex societies.
Pentecost: Paul The Pastor In 2 Corinthians, David E. Fredrickson
Pentecost: Paul The Pastor In 2 Corinthians, David E. Fredrickson

To read 2 Corinthians is to watch a pastor at work. Paul practices, describes, defends, and commends to his audience his pastoral ministry. Something quite rare presents itself in this letter: an extended argument for the ministry of the gospel offered by a practitioner in the heat of the moment. My task is to disclose that heat. What does it mean to place pastoral practice at the center of the interpretation of Pauline epistles? Is this not anachronistic? There is indeed the danger of reading into the text what by habit has become pastoral practice in North America. Nevertheless, by …

When Jose Martí began publication of La Edad de Oro in the summer of 1889, his purpose was to inform and to entertain the "children of America." In the four issues he published (July, August, September, October) Martí's range of topics included literary classics modified for children, original poetry, versions in Spanish of two North American poems, and a commentary on the youthful beginnings of famous writers-in sum a variety of literary lessons. While Martí is much studied and there are numerous works about La Edad de Oro, scant attention has been given to its selections from United States poetry: the …

Resurrection And The New Age, Patrick R. Keifert
Resurrection And The New Age, Patrick R. Keifert
Faculty Publications
As as a general indicator of developing religious sensibilities in American culture, the New Age bears continued Christian interest. It remains, at the very least, a very important resource for understanding trends in American culture and for identifying opportunities for Christian theology and mission. Among these opportunities that New Age movements provide for Christian theology and mission is the opportunity to address religious and metaphysical questions which for many years have been of little interest to a general audience. These metaphysical questions include popular discussion of cosmology, ontology, God, the soul, free will, and a renewed interest in religious experience.
The Passion And Resurrection According To John, Craig R. Koester
The Passion And Resurrection According To John, Craig R. Koester
Faculty Publications
The story of the passion follows the upward movement of the pendulum. It begins with Jesus in the posture of a slave, washing his disciples’ feet (chap. 13); but concludes when Thomas recognizes that Jesus is both Lord and God (20:28), bringing the story back to the high point where it began in 1:1. Each year John’s passion account appears in the lectionary for Holy Week and his story of the resurrection is appointed for Easter and the Sunday after Easter, providing an opportunity for sustained reading and proclamation of these texts. John’s narrative is masterfully told; the drama is …

Adventist Doctrines And Progressive Revelation, P. Gerard Damsteegt

Progressive revelation has played an important role in the development of the Seventh-day Adventist church and its theology. By “progressive revelation” I mean God’s continuous unfolding of prior revealed truth.1 Without such progressive revelation, the unfolding of inspired truth building on truth previously revealed and never denying it, the Seventh-day Adventist Church would not exist.

The Gospel Of Jesus Christ As Taught By The Nephite Prophets, Noel B. Reynolds

Three definitional passages in the Book of Mormon define the gospel or doctrine of Christ precisely as the way or means by which an individual can come to Christ and be saved. Jesus Christ is quoted in all three passages teaching a six-part formula: All men and women who will (1) believe or trust in him, (2) repent of all their sins, and (3) witness to the Father that they have so repented and taken his name upon them, will (4) receive a remission of sins by fire and by the Holy Ghost, which will guide and sustain them as …

A revision of the author's doctoral dissertation (University of Liverpool, 1980), the main purpose of this volume "is to discover what concepts of the deity are revealed in Hebrew personal names, and to find out to what extent Hebrew ideas concerning the deity are distinct from those of other Semitic religions" (p. 19).
