Review Of Jean-Pierre Lecercle, Mallarmé Et La Mode, Marshall C. Olds Dec 1991

Review Of Jean-Pierre Lecercle, Mallarmé Et La Mode, Marshall C. Olds

French Language and Literature Papers

Mallarmé et la mode is clearly a fundamental contribution to the literature surrounding La Derniére mode. Yet the book's importance goes beyond its stated subject because, quite simply, La Derniére mode is more than an isolated instance of mediocrity. The project was interrupted too early to have acquired a unique character and its editorial devenir has yet to be established. Moreover, following on the heals of “Toast funebre," the magazine helped inaugurate Mallarme's arrival in Paris and the widening of interests that would have a profound effect on his poetry. Under the spell of Mallarme himself in a way …

Church Discipline And Moral Reformation In The Thought Of Martin Bucer, Amy Nelson Burnett Sep 1991

Church Discipline And Moral Reformation In The Thought Of Martin Bucer, Amy Nelson Burnett

Department of History: Faculty Publications

Martin Bucer understood church discipline in a broad sense to include four elements: the religious instruction of children and adults through catechization and private confession or individual meetings between pastor and parishioner; a public profession of faith and obedience to the church and its ministers, ideally made when a child was confirmed; the practice of mutual fraternal admonition combined with the oversight of morals by pastors and lay elders; and the imposition of public penance and, if necessary, excommunication, in cases of grave public sin. Church discipline in this broad sense was intended to promote the individual Christian's progress in …

Climate For Change In Extension: Different Perspectives Make A Difference, Rose Marie Tondl Sep 1991

Climate For Change In Extension: Different Perspectives Make A Difference, Rose Marie Tondl

Department of Textiles, Merchandising, and Fashion Design: Faculty Publications

The 1990s are ushering in major changes for Cooperative Extension as National Initiatives become the foundation for program planning, replacing some of the traditional discipline-based programs. As new ideas for program operations are introduced, a natural consequence is human resistance to change. Throughout the system, we're being forced to cope with fundamental changes in the way we do business. The possibility of upsetting the balance of power exists. Individuals will take action based on their perception of how changes will affect their relative power position in the organization. New knowledge, varying economic conditions, pressures of competition, evolution of new cultural …

Zami: A Portrait Of An Artist As A Black Lesbian, Barbara Dibernard Sep 1991

Zami: A Portrait Of An Artist As A Black Lesbian, Barbara Dibernard

Department of English: Faculty Publications

As feminist critics, we cannot continue to ignore differences in race, sexuality, and class when we write about women; we should heed Adrienne Rich's critique of her own earlier work, that she will never again write of the "faceless, raceless, classless category of 'all women.'" Aware that my work will be partial and limited, I would like to explore Audre Lorde's Zami as a portrait of an artist as a black lesbian. In doing so, I hope to suggest areas where we must open up our conception of the female Kunstlerroman so that we are taking account of Lorde's black …

Karen Thompson, Barbara Dibernard May 1991

Karen Thompson, Barbara Dibernard

Women's and Gender Studies Program: Faculty Publications

Karen Thompson’s lover Sharon Kowalski was severely injured in November 1983 when a drunk driver crashed into her car. Sharon is now paralyzed from the waist down and has serious brain damage. The two women had exchanged rings, bought a house together, made each other beneficiaries of their life insurance policies, and made a lifetime commitment to each other, but were extremely closeted. When Karen, at the suggestion of a counselor, came out to Sharon’s parents after the accident, the Kowalskis reacted with anger, denial, and hatred. “They said I was sick and crazy and they never wanted to set …

Review Of Axel Kuhn, Et Al., Revolutionsbegeisterung An Der Hohen Carlsschule, Priscilla A. Hayden-Roy Apr 1991

Review Of Axel Kuhn, Et Al., Revolutionsbegeisterung An Der Hohen Carlsschule, Priscilla A. Hayden-Roy

German Language and Literature Papers

In the last twenty years a number of scholars have discovered growing evidence for revolutionary sympathy and activity among German intellectuals living during the French Revolution. Axel Kuhn, historian at the Technische Hochschule in Stuttgart, has contributed to this body of research with his study of the Hohe Carlsschule, the military academy founded in Stuttgart by Duke Carl Eugen of Württemberg, famous for its oppressively strict discipline and its exceptionally talented students, including Friedrich Schiller. As Kuhn says, the book is written in the form of a detective novel, and relates how he went about uncovering and piecing together the …

Review Of Christopher N. L. Brooke, The Medieval Idea Of Marriage, Carole Levin Apr 1991

Review Of Christopher N. L. Brooke, The Medieval Idea Of Marriage, Carole Levin

Department of History: Faculty Publications

Christopher N. L. Brooke's study serves as a fine complement and counterpoint to Georges Duby's The Knight, the Lady and the Priest: The Making of Marriage in Medieval France (1983). Duby's innovative study looked at aristocratic marriage in medieval France within both a political and a religious and social and economic framework. Brooke, who has had a long career as a medievalist, has produced a more personal statement about his research into the meaning of marriage in the Middle Ages. There are two recurrent questions in Brooke's study: what is marriage, and is Christian marriage something different in its nature …

Evaluation Of Milkweed Floss As An Insulative Fill Material&#;, Patricia Cox Crews, Shiela A. Sievert, Lisa T. Woeppel, Elizabeth A. Mccullough

Department of Textiles, Merchandising, and Fashion Design: Faculty Publications

Milkweed, a perennial plant that can adapt to adverse soil conditions, is being developed as an alternative crop. Fiber characterization and potential market identification are critical to its development. The most promising commercial use for milkweed floss is as a loose fill for jackets and comforters. The purpose of this research was to evaluate milkweed floss as an insulative fill material and to compare its performance to other insulators. Seven identical jackets were constructed using different fill materials matched on a per unit weight basis. The insulation (clo) values for the jackets were measured using a standing, heated manikin in …

The Organ As A Profession: Facing The Future, Quentin Faulkner Apr 1991

The Organ As A Profession: Facing The Future, Quentin Faulkner

Glenn Korff School of Music: Faculty Publications

A recent issue of the Wall Street Journal features an article about the phenomenal growth of the Assemblies of God: "Heavenly Gifts: Preaching a Gospel of Acquisitiveness, A Showy Sect Prospers."

Eluding the hellfire and smoke surrounding his pulpit, the Reverend Tommy Barnett waves goodbye. With a hearty "Hallelujah," he soars straight toward heaven and out of sight.

The abrupt flight of this Pentecostal Peter Paa in a gray suit brings gasps from many of the 6,500 faithful at Phoenix First Assembly. Joining in the extravaganza are a $500,000 special effects system, 200-member choir and 25-piece orchestra. It's a finale …

Till Eulenspiegel's Transgressions Against Convention: Interpreting The Parasite, Priscilla A. Hayden-Roy Jan 1991

Till Eulenspiegel's Transgressions Against Convention: Interpreting The Parasite, Priscilla A. Hayden-Roy

German Language and Literature Papers

Till is the projection of anxieties arising in the face of social instability. Bote, who was witness to just how fragile the given order of patrician rule in Brunswick was, was sensible both to its weaknesses and to its preferability to disorder. The shifting locus of perverseness in TE provides an adequate structure for Bote, who is critical of his society, but uneasy about the forces threatening to tear it apart altogether. The violability of the order is so profound, that at times there seems to be no position which can be defended against parasitic infection. Bote’s admonitory intention thus …

Weimar Culture And The Rise Of National Socialism: The Kampfbund Für Deutsche Kultur, Alan E. Steinweis Jan 1991

Weimar Culture And The Rise Of National Socialism: The Kampfbund Für Deutsche Kultur, Alan E. Steinweis

Department of History: Faculty Publications

Between 1928 and 1932, the National Socialist movement transformed itself from an insurgent fringe party into Germany's most potent political force. The most important factor in this dramatic turnabout in political fortunes was the rapid deterioration of the German economy beginning in 1929. It does not, however, logically follow that the German people simply fell into the lap of the party and its charismatic leader. To the contrary, the party aggressively employed sophisticated propagandistic and organizational strategies for attracting and mobilizing diverse segments of German society. With the onset of the economic crisis, and the consequent social and political turmoil, …

On Having Reasons For Perceptual Beliefs: A Sellarsian Perspective, Dan D. Crawford Jan 1991

On Having Reasons For Perceptual Beliefs: A Sellarsian Perspective, Dan D. Crawford

Department of Philosophy: Faculty Publications

I interpret and defend Sellars’ internalist view of perceptual justification which argues that perceivers have evidence for their perceptual beliefs that includes a higher-order belief about the circumstances in which those beliefs arise, and an epistemic belief about the reliability of beliefs that are formed in those circumstances. The pattern of inference that occurs in ordinary cases of perception is elicited.

I then defend this account of perceptual evidence against (1) Alston’s objection that ordinary perceivers are not as critical and reflective as this view requires them to be, and (2) the charge that internalism leads to various forms of …

Shamanic Dances, For Orchestra, Randall Snyder Jan 1991

Shamanic Dances, For Orchestra, Randall Snyder

Randall Snyder Compositions

Initiation Leopard Dance Gait of the Aardvark The Eagle's Gift program notes Shamanic Dances is a musical depiction of the Shamanic Journey. Its four sections (played without a pause) relates how the Shaman ) or priest-healer-magician) undergoes a rigorous initiatory process and is transformed into three animals, the sinuous leopard, the awkward aardvark, and the soaring eagle. Two basic musical ideas pervade this overture-length piece: first, an ever-increasing succession of tempi (each one-fifth faster than its predecessor) generating a progression from the slow opening pulse of 52 beats per minute, to the final 161 beats per minute. After this last …

Response To "New Documents: Qumran And Gnostic Writings" By Joseph A. Fitzmyer, Jr., Sidnie White Crawford Jan 1991

Response To "New Documents: Qumran And Gnostic Writings" By Joseph A. Fitzmyer, Jr., Sidnie White Crawford

Department of Classics and Religious Studies: Faculty Publications

In my response, I will discuss three points raised by Professor Fitzmyer: the identification of the Qumran sect as the Essenes, Jerome Murphy-O’Connor’s hypothesis of the Babylonian origins of the Qumran sect, and the impact of the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls on Old Testament textual criticism.

I would suggest that the group of Jews who inhabited Qumran may have evolved over time, from a group with deep roots in Palestinian Judaism, who split with other Jews over such disputed things as law and calendar, to a sect with highly developed doctrines of, for example, predestination and angelology, which …

The Eternal Horizon: Landscapes From The Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery, Daphne A. Deeds Jan 1991

The Eternal Horizon: Landscapes From The Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery, Daphne A. Deeds

Sheldon Museum of Art: Catalogs and Publications

It is significant that the earliest recorded historical documentation of landscape, as such, occurred in the same quarter century as the Europeans' discovery of the New World. In 1494 the German painter and printmaker, Albrecht Durer, produced watercolor landscapes, probably on site, in single sittings. Even though Renaissance characteristics such as new techniques in the handling of light, atmospheric perspective and space are present in his work, Durer's watercolor sketches of pure landscapes did not influence the art of his time. It was another German, Albrecht Altdorfer, who "is credited with the first pure landscapes--both in painting and in prints. …
