Lo Cotidiano: A Key Element Of Mujerista Theology, Ada María Isasi-Díaz Aug 2002

Lo Cotidiano: A Key Element Of Mujerista Theology, Ada María Isasi-Díaz

Journal of Hispanic / Latino Theology

Working with Latinas at the grassroots demonstrates that the true horizon of liberation, for women and for the community, opens from the level of everyday life and its struggles, en lo cotidiano. Even where liberation is figured in terms of structural transformation, the author urges theology to follow the insights of ordinary women: Structural change “must be rooted in lo cotidiano. Unless the changes we struggle to bring about impact the organization and function of lo cotidiano, structural change will not happen, and, if it happens, it will not last."

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Fort Worth District, is investigating the water resource problems, needs, and opportunities within the Big Fossil Creek drainage in Tarrant County, Texas. The effort focuses on describing existing conditions and identifying measures to minimize and control flood loss within a 48,396.8-acre area of the drainage north of the city of Fort Worth. Geo-Marine, Inc., of Plano, Texas, was contracted by the USACE to assess the potential for historic properties within the drainage area. Background research and a pedestrian reconnaissance survey of the project area were carried out and a geographical information systems (GIS) …

Theodicy And Animals, Joseph J. Lynch Aug 2002

Theodicy And Animals, Joseph J. Lynch

Between the Species

It is widely acknowledged among those philosophers and theologians who have given the matter much thought that the fact of animal suffering challenges Theism in a distinctive way. Standard attempts to reconcile human suffering with a perfectly powerful and benevolent deity don’t seem to apply easily to the case of animals. Animals can hardly be said to deserve their suffering or be morally improved by it, nor is it generally supposed that animals will be compensated for their pain in an afterlife. On the face of it, then, animal pain appears to be a bothersome evil still left over when …

Under His Own Flag: John Baker’S Gravestone Memorial In Retrospect, George L. Findlen Jul 2002

Under His Own Flag: John Baker’S Gravestone Memorial In Retrospect, George L. Findlen

Maine History

John Baker is an enigmatic figure, half hero and half scoundrel His actions in raising the American flag on the north shore of the St. John River in July 1827, in defiance of British authorities, contributed to the tensions that resulted in the “Bloodless” Aroostook War in 1839, and this in turn provided the impetus for settling the U.S.-Canadian boundary along the St. John River according to the Webster-Ashburton Treaty of 1842. Jn 1868 the State of Maine erected a monument of sorts to the memory of John Baker in a cemetery near Fort Fairfield. Pondering why the monument was …

Alger Veazie Currier: Apostle Of The Beaux-Arts In Maine, V. Scott Dimond

Maine History

Alger Veazie Currier began a promising career as an artist in Paris when two of his paintings were accepted to the prestigious Salon of 1888. After this moment of glory, Currier returned to his home in Hallowell, at a time when art in Maine was at its most provincial. He brought with him with fresh approach to teaching art and a mission to bring both painters and patrons up to date. During a brief tenure at Bowdoin College, Currier signaled a break from the old- fashioned landscape painting that dominated the Maine art scene. Although his European, Beaux-Arts ideas were …
