Research Data

This project attempts not only to improve the method of web extraction in relation to the source material (lexical-semantic group of Russian sound verbs, semantically modified at the word-forming level) but also systematize the search results using the format that is convenient and effective for a linguistic researcher. The main tasks at this stage of the research were to collect, compile (combine results), analyze and present a summary index of all possible verbal forms of sound verbs, recorded in electronic versions of dictionaries of the Russian language and in the database of the Russian National Corpus (RNC).

The output takes …

This project articulates a new methodology, Discursive Nodal Analysis (DNA) to explore and track the growth, spread, and interaction of conspiracy-oriented communities in digital spaces. By utilizing a combination of social network analysis (SNA), critical discourse analysis (CDA), and memetic rhetorical analysis (MRA), DNA empowers researchers to explore the unique rhetorical characteristics of online conspiracy theories that enable their evolution within digital environments while simultaneously tracking and analyzing their velocity and spread. Through an examination of discursive patterns, rhetorical strategies, and the mapping of communicative networks in digital communities, this methodology seeks to shed light on the dynamics of conspiracy …

The Plight Of Threatened Afghan And Iranian Scholars And Students, Mehrzad Boroujerdi

History and Political Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

In the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan religious ideas and laws seek to control all spheres of private and public life and state-sponsored restrictions hinder access to education and academic freedom for numerous citizens. The prevailing sedimented culture in both countries has resulted in the dismissal of many experienced scholarly personnel and an ensuing “brain drain.” This research project has cataloged some of the conditions that have impinge upon scholarly inquiry in Iran and Afghanistan and have led many scholars to leave their countries of birth. Based on an extensive literature review and personal interviews …

Non-Decision Decisions In The Huawei 5g Dilemma: Policy In Japan, The Uk, And Germany, Alanna Krolikowski, Todd H. Hall

History and Political Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Huawei, the telecommunications company based in the People's Republic of China (PRC), has presented the governments of several middle powers with a policy dilemma. On the one hand, Huawei's affordable 5G network technology is attractive to telecommunications operators in these countries, which do not have domestic producers of this equipment. On the other hand, the U.S. government and intelligence agencies in other countries maintain that Huawei gear presents intolerable network security risks, a charge that the PRC government and Huawei forcefully reject as they insist Huawei merits access to foreign markets. Facing the question of whether and how to allow …

Research Data

The emergence and development of electronic versions of dictionaries and corpus databases allows the researcher to finally do what was technically impossible on paper: to collect, compile and analyze the entire index of all possible verbal forms of different ranges and scales. This project attempts to improve the method of web extraction in relation to the source material (lexical-semantic group of Russian sound verbs, semantically modified at the word-forming level) and summarize the search results as an interactive summary table. A novel, four-position system of numbering the verbal forms have been introduced and a subsequent experimental multi-dimensional scaling of results …

Research Data

Modern Russian dictionaries do not include all possible forms of words. To compile such an index, even for one part of a speech, on paper is not technically feasible. With the appearance of electronic versions of dictionaries, however, for the first time we can try to create an inventory of all possible forms for the lexical-semantic group of Russian sound verbs, using the web-scraping methodology. This project attempts to develop a number of comprehensive tables for the prefixed (semantically modified at the word-formation level) sound verbs and all their forms. A novel, four-position system of numbering the verbal forms to …

Unjust Revisions: A Social Justice Framework For Technical Editing, Sam Clem, Ryan Cheek Mar 2022

Unjust Revisions: A Social Justice Framework For Technical Editing, Sam Clem, Ryan Cheek

English and Technical Communication Faculty Research & Creative Works

Background: There is a lack of conceptual framework for how to develop more inclusive practices in the subfield of technical editing. Literature review: Some researchers have posited theories, like feminism and rhetorical theory, as ways to conceptualize technical editing. This piece extends that literature into social justice using Walton, Moore, and Jones's 3Ps heuristic of positionality, privilege, and power. Research questions: 1. What ideologies are circulating in technical editing pedagogy? 2. How might technical editing pedagogy become more inclusive? Methodology: We conduct a rhetorical analysis of the major academic works in technical editing, including books, textbooks, and academic articles, and …

Creation Of A Neural Network For The American Sign Language To Russian Translation App, John T. Simmons Jan 2022

Creation Of A Neural Network For The American Sign Language To Russian Translation App, John T. Simmons

Capstone Projects

  1. A large population of people utilize American Sign Language for their primary method of communication.
  2. No commercially available product is available for these people for when they need to communicate with speakers of a foreign language.
  3. We must investigate methods to make communication between these two parties easier and more accessible.
  4. By using a neural network to classify images of American Sign Language letters, we can build a service to make translation of American Sign Language into foreign languages possible.

The Development Of The Word-Formation Synthesis Terminology. Distinctive Features Of Terminological System (Using The Material Of Russian Verbs Of Sound), Irina Ivliyeva

Faculty Research & Creative Works

The purpose of the study is to present the terminology of word-formation synthesis as an organized system and identify the stages of development of its relevant terms. The scientific novelty of the study resides in the fact that a structured corpus of word-formation synthesis terms with elements of definitional analysis is introduced into scientific usage. As a result, it has been proven that the terminology of word-formation synthesis is a multilevel, hierarchically organized system, and the inventory of units within it changes at different stages of research. The system of modification synthesis terms is examined and tested with and through …
