Reflections On Linear B, (Part 3): The Egyptian Cat-God Mau, Gerald Leonard Cohen

The cat figure in Linear B sign 80 (with antecedents) likely derives ultimately from the nightly defeat of the Egyptian god of chaos (Apep, aka Apophis) by the sun god Ra, who took the form of the divine cat Mau. An alternative interpretation is set forth in Ferrara and Weingarten 2022, which sees the cat portrayals for wool or woolen products in Cretan Hieroglyphics as traceable to the cat sound /ma/ appearing by coincidence in Greek μαλλός ‘wool’ (possibly of pre-Greek origin). Perhaps both factors played a role (multiple causation).

English Abstract:
The purpose of the research is to present the terminology of word-formation synthesis as an organized system, to identify the stages of development of relevant terms. The scientific novelty of the research lies in the fact that a structured corpus of terms of word-formation synthesis with elements of definitional analysis is introduced into scientific circulation. different stages of research. The system of terms of modification synthesis is applied and studied in practice – in the author's search program for web extraction of verbs of sound from the databases of modern dictionaries and the Russian National Corpus.

Revised: Etymology Of “Ragtime”: Role Of “Tag, Rag, And “Bobtail” (The Rabble) And The 19th Century “Fancy Rag Balls”, Fred Hoeptner
Arts, Languages and Philosophy Faculty Research & Creative Works
Despite abundant speculation about the etymology of “rag” in “ragtime” since the emergence of ragtime music into popular consciousness in 1896, a convincing solution has remained elusive. As OED3 sums up the situation (rag, n. meaning #5): “Origin uncertain and disputed.”
But at least some new insight may now be possible. The present study is the first to use digitized newspaper archives to track “rag” and “ragtime” from their sources to full maturity, and the following picture emerges:
- The starting point is tag, rag, and bobtail “the common herd, the rabble”; the word appears in OED3 under bob-tail.
- Rag as …

Many web sites, in particular ones that serve content from a content management system or database, deliver their content as HTML with an underlying computer generated structure that is then visually formatted and styled using Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) and JavaScript.
Additionally, when the website uses a web form to query and return results, the web address is read by the web server or application server, the address is then parsed for parameters, and the parameters are passed to the database behind the website which control the results returned.
There are techniques that utilize these facts to extract large amounts …

The Philosophical Dimensions Of Urban Transportation: Introduction, Shane Ray Epting
The Philosophical Dimensions Of Urban Transportation: Introduction, Shane Ray Epting
Arts, Languages and Philosophy Faculty Research & Creative Works
Geographers, urban planners, and interdisciplinary scholars have made numerous contributions toward understanding urban transportation. Until recently, philosophers have largely neglected the topic, but now transportation is an expanding area of research, most notably in the emerging subfield known as philosophy of the city. This special issue aims to increase philosophical contributions to its study. Those who are working in this area are examining several subjects that were previously ignored. Transportation is one such topic. The articles in this special edition make this claim evident. Philosophy of the city is informed by several other subfields, and these articles on urban mobility …

Transportation Planning For Automated Vehicles -- Or Automated Vehicles For Transportation Planning?, Shane Ray Epting
Arts, Languages and Philosophy Faculty Research & Creative Works
In recent years, philosophical examinations of automated vehicles have progressed far beyond initial concerns over the ethical decisions that pertain to programming in the event of a crash. In turn, this paper moves in that direction, focusing on the motivations behind efforts to implement driverless vehicles into urban settings. The author argues that the many perceived benefits of these technologies yield a received view of automated vehicles. This position holds that driverless vehicles can solve most if not all urban mobility issues. However, the problem with such an outlook is that it lends itself to transportation planning for automated vehicles, …
