Trans∗Vulnerability And Digital Research Ethics: A Qubit Ethical Analysis Of Transparency Activism, Avery C. Edenfield, Ryan Cheek, Sam Clem
Trans∗Vulnerability And Digital Research Ethics: A Qubit Ethical Analysis Of Transparency Activism, Avery C. Edenfield, Ryan Cheek, Sam Clem
English and Technical Communication Faculty Research & Creative Works
Trans communities across the United States are under assault. Researchers seeking to work with trans people and other multiply marginalized and underrepresented communities must attend to ethical research practices within the communities in which they participate. Digital research ethics is particularly murky with issues of embodiment, vulnerability, and unclear IRB guidance. Comparing two transparency activist organizations-Wikileaks and DDoSecrets-we introduce "qubit ethics," a trans material, trans-corporeal ethics of care as praxis within vulnerable online communities. We then demonstrate how this unique approach to research design allows for the complex entanglements that is trans life, particularly digital life. Finally, we present clear …
Outcomes Of Training In Smart Home Technology Adoption: A Living Laboratory Study, David Wright, Daniel Burton Shank, Thomas Yarbrough
Outcomes Of Training In Smart Home Technology Adoption: A Living Laboratory Study, David Wright, Daniel Burton Shank, Thomas Yarbrough
English and Technical Communication Faculty Research & Creative Works
While various forms of smart home technology have been available for decades, they have yet to achieve widespread adoption. Although they have risen in popularity during recent years, the general public continue to rate smart home devices as overly complex compared to their benefits. This article reports the results of an eight-month study into the effects of training on smart home technology adoption. Building upon the results of a previous study, and using the same living laboratory approach, we studied the effects of training on the attitudes of a group of residents toward use of smart home technology. Results show …

Unhappy Feet: Fred's Experience With Americans In Antarctica, Brian Lafser
Unhappy Feet: Fred's Experience With Americans In Antarctica, Brian Lafser
Undergraduate Research Conference at Missouri S&T
"Unhappy Feet” is an examination of the environmental impact of human settlement in Antarctica, and the effects that human-influenced Global Warming have had on some of its inhabitants. As told through the perspective of Fred, an Emperor Penguin, who developed a personal relationship with the author of this project during his nineteen month stay on the Southern Continent. It also points out flaws in the Non-Interference policies surrounding interaction with animals that have been put in place by the United States Antarctic Program. The aforementioned flaws are discussed through the use of primary sources, eyewitness accounts and pictures taken from …
A Study Of The Modern Progressive Movement, Anthony Watson
A Study Of The Modern Progressive Movement, Anthony Watson
Undergraduate Research Conference at Missouri S&T
From 1972 to 2020, the progressive wing of the Democratic party has evolved and adapted to follow a changing American society that looks drastically different today than the one that overwhelmingly rejected George McGovern in 1972 in favor of President Nixon. From being blamed for dragging down Democratic candidates through the 1970s and '80s to being sidelined by the "New Democrat" movement headlined by President's Clinton and Obama to resurging back into popularity in 2016 led by Bernard "Bernie" Sander's run for the Democratic nomination, the movement is now as strong as ever. This research looks at how progressives within …

Icelandic Folklore And The Cultural Memory Of Religious Change, Eric Shane Bryan
Icelandic Folklore And The Cultural Memory Of Religious Change, Eric Shane Bryan
English and Technical Communication Faculty Research & Creative Works
This book attempts to understand the origins and development of religious belief in Iceland and greater Scandinavia through the lenses of five carefully selected Icelandic folktales collected in Iceland during the nineteenth century. Each of these five stories has a story of its own: a historical and cultural context, a literary legacy, influences from beliefs of all kinds (orthodox and heterodox, elite or lay), and modalities (oral or written) by which the story was told. These factors leave an imprint -- sometimes discernible, sometimes not -- upon the story, and when that imprint is readable, the legacies and influences upon …

Revised: Etymology Of “Ragtime”: Role Of “Tag, Rag, And “Bobtail” (The Rabble) And The 19th Century “Fancy Rag Balls”, Fred Hoeptner
Arts, Languages and Philosophy Faculty Research & Creative Works
Despite abundant speculation about the etymology of “rag” in “ragtime” since the emergence of ragtime music into popular consciousness in 1896, a convincing solution has remained elusive. As OED3 sums up the situation (rag, n. meaning #5): “Origin uncertain and disputed.”
But at least some new insight may now be possible. The present study is the first to use digitized newspaper archives to track “rag” and “ragtime” from their sources to full maturity, and the following picture emerges:
- The starting point is tag, rag, and bobtail “the common herd, the rabble”; the word appears in OED3 under bob-tail.
- Rag as …
Zombie Ent(R)Ailments In Risk Communication: A Rhetorical Analysis Of The Cdc’S Zombie Apocalypse Preparedness Campaign, Ryan Cheek
English and Technical Communication Faculty Research & Creative Works
Apocalypticism is a powerful brew of eschatological belief and political imagination that is extremely persuasive. This article addresses the intersections between apocalyptic rhetoric and the technical communication of risk, disease outbreak, and disaster preparedness by analyzing the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's zombie apocalypse preparedness campaign. Specifically, I argue that the framing of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's campaign relies on and extends problematic iterations of apocalypticism and undermines the educational objectives of disaster preparedness and response. I conclude with suggestions for how technical communicators designing public awareness and outreach campaigns can use existential risk rhetoric for …

Inclusive Audience Analysis And Creating Manageable Content, Carleigh J. Davis, Michelle F. Eble
Inclusive Audience Analysis And Creating Manageable Content, Carleigh J. Davis, Michelle F. Eble
English and Technical Communication Faculty Research & Creative Works
Over the last 15 years, content management systems have dramatically changed the ways we think about our pedagogical approaches to teaching audience analysis. This is especially true when content may need to be reused in a set of discrete contexts for various audiences. This chapter introduces a heuristic that helps students think about, write, and deliver reusable content. Modeled after Ridolfo and DeVoss’s (2009) concept rhetorical velocity, this heuristic introduces students to both how they must consider primary audiences for the content they develop as well as various stakeholders, possible audiences, and potential contexts where their content needs to be …

Many web sites, in particular ones that serve content from a content management system or database, deliver their content as HTML with an underlying computer generated structure that is then visually formatted and styled using Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) and JavaScript.
Additionally, when the website uses a web form to query and return results, the web address is read by the web server or application server, the address is then parsed for parameters, and the parameters are passed to the database behind the website which control the results returned.
There are techniques that utilize these facts to extract large amounts …
