One Half Billion Strong They Came: Gray Squirrel Migrations In The American Old Northwest During The 19th Century, Diana L. Ahmad

History and Political Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

After the American Revolution ended in the 1780s, the citizens of the new United States moved north of the Ohio River into the Northwest. As they established homes, they saw many gray, furry creatures known scientifically as sciurus carolinensis. It took little time for the farmers to discover that the gray squirrels were their new enemy. Instead of being cute little forest dwellers, the squirrels proved to be a danger to the newly transplanted farmers when the animals suddenly and seemingly out of nowhere appeared by the millions. The squirrels ate the freshly planted seeds, as well as the crops …

The Philosophical Dimensions Of Urban Transportation: Introduction, Shane Ray Epting Aug 2019

The Philosophical Dimensions Of Urban Transportation: Introduction, Shane Ray Epting

Arts, Languages and Philosophy Faculty Research & Creative Works

Geographers, urban planners, and interdisciplinary scholars have made numerous contributions toward understanding urban transportation. Until recently, philosophers have largely neglected the topic, but now transportation is an expanding area of research, most notably in the emerging subfield known as philosophy of the city. This special issue aims to increase philosophical contributions to its study. Those who are working in this area are examining several subjects that were previously ignored. Transportation is one such topic. The articles in this special edition make this claim evident. Philosophy of the city is informed by several other subfields, and these articles on urban mobility …

Transportation Planning For Automated Vehicles -- Or Automated Vehicles For Transportation Planning?, Shane Ray Epting

Arts, Languages and Philosophy Faculty Research & Creative Works

In recent years, philosophical examinations of automated vehicles have progressed far beyond initial concerns over the ethical decisions that pertain to programming in the event of a crash. In turn, this paper moves in that direction, focusing on the motivations behind efforts to implement driverless vehicles into urban settings. The author argues that the many perceived benefits of these technologies yield a received view of automated vehicles. This position holds that driverless vehicles can solve most if not all urban mobility issues. However, the problem with such an outlook is that it lends itself to transportation planning for automated vehicles, …

The Role Of Implicit Semantic Components During The Synthesis Of Russian Verbal Modifications (A Case Study For The Verbs Of Mechanical Phonation), Irina V. Ivliyeva Jun 2019

The Role Of Implicit Semantic Components During The Synthesis Of Russian Verbal Modifications (A Case Study For The Verbs Of Mechanical Phonation), Irina V. Ivliyeva

Arts, Languages and Philosophy Faculty Research & Creative Works

The article examines the implicit components in the meaning of semantically modified derivatives. Using the methods of componential analysis of definitions from various Russian explanatory and aspectual dictionaries, the implicit components in the sound verbs' meanings are inventoried. The impact of the relevant implicit components on the synthesis process is examined; the dichotomy of the implicit components of meaning and corresponding synthesizing prefixes is identified. The productivity and typical colloquial usage of synthesized derivatives is demonstrated using data from the Russian National Corpus.

Comments On Etymology, May 2019: Kibosh Update #4 (Compilation), Gerald Leonard Cohen, Stephen Goranson, Matthew Little

Arts, Languages and Philosophy Faculty Research & Creative Works

It has been ten years since Matthew Little sent me his suggestion that ‘kibosh’ in ‘put the kibosh on’ derives from the fearsome Mideastern whip known as the kurbash; Stephen Goranson soon thereafter independently made the same suggestion in messages to the American Dialect Society, gradually adding the important initial discoveries to buttress that proposal.

The three of us wound up collaborating on ‘kibosh,’ first in Comments on Etymology and then in our 2017 book Origin of Kibosh. Updates continued to appear in COE as various scholars weighed in and some new material appeared. It is time now to …

General Guides To Publish Well-Written Technical Papers, Jie Han Mar 2019

General Guides To Publish Well-Written Technical Papers, Jie Han

Invited Speakers

Technical papers are one of the important means to disseminate research results to the scientific and engineering community. They should be well written and make original contributions to the body of knowledge. Most technical papers are published after a peer-review process, which may be short or long, depending on many factors including the quality of technical contents, presentation, responses to review comments, and revisions. This webinar will first provide a brief overview of a typical publication process, key requirements for technical papers, and standards of acceptance and then focus on common issues in paper writing (including paper presentation) with general …

Six Key Elements Of High Quality Technical Writing, Xianming Shi

Invited Speakers

What is the definition of “high quality”, when it comes to technical writing? What are the key elements that differentiate high-quality technical writing from the technical writing that is less effective in communicating the message? This webinar stems from the presenter’s observations and personal thoughts over the last decade or two, as an active researcher, a mentor, and a teacher in the engineering community. This webinar will be organized around six key elements or keywords identified by the presenter, i.e., innovation, engaging, hypothesis, logic, synthesis, and details.

English 3302 -- The History And Structure Of The English Language, Sp 2019, Eric Shane Bryan

Resources

I summarize the outcomes of my Spring of 2019 implementation of the zero-cost textbook option for English 3302 course as very successful while also noting certain areas in which improvement may be made in future iterations of the course. This report will proceed in three parts: I) an overview of the process by which I developed the materials for this course, II) discussion of outcomes for the methods of assessments (per my A&OER grant proposal), and III) a discussion of challenges that occurred during the semester and plans for improving course materials in the future.

Student Perceptions And Attitudes Towards A Technical Writing Service Course At Missouri S&T, Hannah Claire Coffman

Masters Theses

"In order to learn how STEM students perceive Missouri S&T's English 3560 Technical Writing class, I designed a research study to investigate how a sample population of 90 students viewed the class. Due to the nature of qualitative research, the results of this study cannot be generalized to a larger population. However, the results can and do provide insight into the situation of these Missouri S&T students in English 3560 classes and contribute to our collective understanding of the technical writing service course at Missouri S&T and other US universities. The study investigated whether the sample population of students who …
