Two moral principles have been basic to the legal decisions concerning the rights and duties toward the newly dead. They are the duty to give decent burial and the denial to anyone of a right to ownership of the dead body for commercial profit. The next-of-kin-rather than the church or the state have come to bear the primary responsibility for providing decent burial.
The familial duty to give decent burial has come to be understood as a legal right to determine what is to be done to the body in the interval between death and burial.
Armed with this right, …

D-Structures And Their Semantics, Rohit J. Parikh
D-Structures And Their Semantics, Rohit J. Parikh
Publications and Research
"Many logicians are familiar with the game theoretic approach to semantics, due to Jaakko Hintikka. This paper by me contains class notes of a logic course at Boston University in fall 1972. It has similar game theoretic ideas, developed quite independently, but influenced by the work of A. Ehrenfeucht. It applies to a larger class of logics, including classical logic, intuitionistic logic and the *-semantics of Ehrenfeucht. The treatment is via D-structures which are finite approximations of infinite structures. For various reasons I did not publish this paper then, but some abstracts, both by myself as well as joint abstracts …
Radhagovind Sangitsar Of Maharaja Pratap Singh, Peter L. Manuel
Radhagovind Sangitsar Of Maharaja Pratap Singh, Peter L. Manuel
Publications and Research
The Radhagovind Sangitsār (or simply Sangitsār) completed in Jaipur around 1800, is a significant musical treatise regarding North Indian classical music. Its special importance lies in its status as one of the very few writings on Hindustani music in the nearly two centuries between the 16th-17th Sanskrit and Persian texts and the early modern writings commencing in the decades around 1900. In the interests of disseminating it to interested students and scholars I have digitized chapter seven, on rāga, which is the chapter that has proved to be of most use and interest to musicologists.

"Folk Dance In China: The Dance Pioneer Dai Ailian 1916-2006", Eva S. Chou
Publications and Research
The collecting of lyrics and music began in China in the 1920s, when anthropological studies introduced the cultures of the countryside and its villages to the urban elite and helped to create a more complex definition of Chinese culture. The skills for collecting the dance elements of ceremonies and rituals, however, lagged. This gap was first filled in the 1940s by the unusual talents of Dai Ailian (1916-2006). Born in Trinidad of Chinese ancestry, Dai received training in ballet and modern dance in England from 1931-37 when both dance forms were developing in that country. Chance and purpose brought about …
