An Architecture Of Ground, Frame, And Viewer: A Box Office For The Theatre District Of Boston, Ma, Casey Boss

Architecture Thesis Prep

"There exists a separation between what we see and the reproduction created to describe it. Through seeing we locate ourselves in the world. References to the things around us as well as recollections of things we have seen before are our base for what we currently see.

Urbanisms With Japanese Culture And Its Living Style, Madoka Yuasa Oct 2002

Urbanisms With Japanese Culture And Its Living Style, Madoka Yuasa

Architecture Senior Theses

"The current urban Japanese houses have lost its richness closely related to its nature, landscapes, and seasonal events which their traditional architectural spaces had an important role as a part of their lives. This situation is due to rapid economic grows they followed in the process of modernization after the WWII, and the urban situation with respect to architecture in their city is complex. In this project, I would like to propose a housing system that has their traditional design aspects to incorporate five senses with nature and also complex contemporary urban situation to enhance their livings."

Meridian Hill Park: The Making Of An American Neoclassical Landscape, Elizabeth Brabec Oct 2002

Meridian Hill Park: The Making Of An American Neoclassical Landscape, Elizabeth Brabec

Landscape Architecture & Regional Planning Faculty Publication Series

The neoclassical design was the dominant design movement in landscape architecture at the turn of the last century, dictating the form and design of public parks for most of the first half of the twentieth century. Meridian Hill Park, located just north of the White ouse in Washington, DC, is considered the most ambitious neoclassical park ever conceived in the United States. The paper provides an overview of the design development of the park, illustrating how classical design precedents were used to create a contemporary neo-classical park.

Sprawl, Growth Boundaries And The Rehnquist Court , Michael E Lewyn Sep 2002

Sprawl, Growth Boundaries And The Rehnquist Court , Michael E Lewyn

Michael E Lewyn

This article addresses the constitutionality and wisdom of Oregon's urban growth boundary (UGB) program. The article concludes that the program is constitutional under current precedent, and that (contrary to claims made by UGB critics) there is little evidence that the UGB has caused Oregon's runup in housing prices. On the other hand, UGB supporters may have exaggerated the UGB's positive environmental results.

Research Into Evaporative Cooling Of Buildings In Maritime Climates, Ben Costelloe, Donal Finn Sep 2002

Research Into Evaporative Cooling Of Buildings In Maritime Climates, Ben Costelloe, Donal Finn

Reports

Concern with environmental emissions has focused attention on traditional forms of energy use in buildings, with a view to reducing and making more rational use of energy consumption. One area of concern is the traditional, refrigeration based, commercial air conditioning system, which has high levels of electrical power consumption in fans and refrigeration compressors. There is also concern among building owners and design teams, supported by the PROBE series of post occupancy studies, conducted by the CIBSE, that many buildings, with traditional forms of air conditioning, under perform in terms of occupant satisfaction, ease of operation and control, maintenance costs …

Reverse Commuting And Job Access In California: Markets, Needs And Policy Prospects, Robert Cervero, Yu-Hsin Tsai, Joulia Dibb, Andrew Kluter, Cornelius K. Nuworsoo, Irina Petrova, M. Reinur Pohan, Martin Wachs, Elizabeth Deakin

City and Regional Planning

Getting to work, keeping appointments, and taking advantage of employment support services require suitable transportation. Many low-income Californians do not own cars and, outside of large metropolitan areas, public transit services are often sparse or non-existent, making it difficult for jobless individuals to make the transition from welfare-to-work. The challenges are especially great for those trying to get from central-city residences to suburban jobs, so-called reverse commuters, since public transportation services have traditionally been aligned in the opposite direction. Propelling the growth in reverse commuting has been a number of powerful megatrends. Topping the list has been decentralization of employment, …

Regional Technology Assets And Opportunities: The Geographic Clustering Of High-Tech Industry, Science And Innovation In Appalachia, Edward Feser, Harvey Goldstein, Henry Renski, Catherine Renault

Edward J Feser

This study constitutes a systematic location analysis of the technology assets of Appalachia. The report identifies and documents sub-regional concentrations of technology-related employment, R&D, and applied innovation within and immediately adjacent to the 406-county service area of the Appalachian Regional Commission. By assembling and analyzing an extensive set of data at high levels of functional and spatial detail, the study reveals localized technology strengths that might be nurtured through focused economic development policy.

Architectural Sociology And Post-Modern Architectural Forms, Ronald Smith, Valerie Bugni Aug 2002

Architectural Sociology And Post-Modern Architectural Forms, Ronald Smith, Valerie Bugni

Sociology Faculty Research

Architectural sociology examines how architectural forms are both the cause and effect of sociocultural phenomena. As illustration of both but especially the former relationship, we could examine the role of architecture in the creation of contemporary Las Vegas, a city that has experienced almost unparalleled growth in residents (1.4 mil.) and tourists (35 mil.annually) since 1990. We consider the postmodern characteristics of Las Vegas and architecture’s role in creating this image.

The Changing Character Of Economic Development, John R. Mullin Jul 2002

The Changing Character Of Economic Development, John R. Mullin

Landscape Architecture & Regional Planning Faculty Publication Series

This article lays out several key trends concerning industrial development that I have noted over the past ten years in my consulting practice and academic research. They are not exhaustive nor will they be reflected in all parts of the country. They do, however, point out that we need to continually adapt to the market place; we need to become more pro-active in controlling how and where we stimulate development; we need to insure that we provide the opportunity for industry to succeed; and, finally, we must be reflective of world events and the speed of change.

Sociology And The Search For Architectural Design Solutions: Discovering That The Problem Might Be Bigger Than We Thought, Ronald Smith Jul 2002

Sociology And The Search For Architectural Design Solutions: Discovering That The Problem Might Be Bigger Than We Thought, Ronald Smith

Sociology Faculty Research

In previous newsletters we have been somewhat general in arguing how sociology can offer distinct perspectives and possible solutions to architectural design problems. In this article we instead give a specific hypothetical problem that might well confront the architect. In doing so we might be able to see what sociology can offer the architect in terms of possible insights and solutions, and we might also find that in analyzing one problem we may well find connections to still larger problems.
