A Model For Undergraduate Study In Urban Design, Brian Kesner, Lise Burcher, Maurice Nelischer, Vicente Del Rio Nov 2002

A Model For Undergraduate Study In Urban Design, Brian Kesner, Lise Burcher, Maurice Nelischer, Vicente Del Rio

City and Regional Planning

Through this paper we intend to raise some fundamental questions regarding urban design education at the undergraduate level, and to discuss possible pedagogical strategies. The discussion is fostered by the brief description of a recently developed and still evolving proposal to provide an area of concentration in urban design education at the undergraduate level within the College of Architecture and Environmental Design at the California Polytechnic University, San Luis Obispo, California. One of the starting points for our Cal Poly program development team - composed of faculty from the departments of Architecture, Landscape Architecture and City and Regional Planning - …

Getting to work, keeping appointments, and taking advantage of employment support services require suitable transportation. Many low-income Californians do not own cars and, outside of large metropolitan areas, public transit services are often sparse or non-existent, making it difficult for jobless individuals to make the transition from welfare-to-work. The challenges are especially great for those trying to get from central-city residences to suburban jobs, so-called reverse commuters, since public transportation services have traditionally been aligned in the opposite direction. Propelling the growth in reverse commuting has been a number of powerful megatrends. Topping the list has been decentralization of employment, …

Climate, Margot Mcdonald

Architecture

Cal Poly Lands located in San Luis Obispo County experience a collection of idyllic microclimates due to their geographical position relative to the Irish Hills and San Luis Range to the south and west, and the Santa Lucia Range to the east. These ridges create sheltered valleys that retard the persistent summer coastal fog common to neighboring communities to the west and the wide seasonal temperature variations of the Salinas and San Joaquin Valley north of the Cuesta Grade.

Physical And Digital Media Strategies For Exploring "Imagined" Realities Of Space, Skin And Light, Thomas Fowler, Iv, Brook Muller Jan 2002

Physical And Digital Media Strategies For Exploring "Imagined" Realities Of Space, Skin And Light, Thomas Fowler, Iv, Brook Muller

Architecture

This paper will discuss an unconventional methodology for using physical and digital media strategies in a tightly structured framework for the integration of Environmental Control Systems (ECS) principles into a third year design studio. An interchangeable use of digital media and physical material enabled architectural explorations of rich tactile and luminous engagement.

The principles that provide the foundation for integrative strategies between a design studio and building technology course spring from the Bauhaus tradition where a systematic approach to craftsmanship and visual perception is emphasized. Focusing particularly on color, light, texture and materials, Josef Albers explored the assemblage of found …

Finite Element Assessment Of The Effects Of Seismic Loading Rate On Soil Liquefaction, Radu Popescu Jan 2002

Finite Element Assessment Of The Effects Of Seismic Loading Rate On Soil Liquefaction, Radu Popescu

Architectural Engineering

The influence of frequency content of seismic excitation on the extent and pattern of pore-water pressure build-up in saturated soil deposits is addressed. Seismic acceleration time histories are generated as uniformly modulated nonstationary stochastic processes, in accordance with prescribed response spectra and prescribed modulating functions. Based on numerical examples, it is shown that the interplay between the frequency content of seismic excitation and the dynamic characteristics of the soil system and their evolution during and after the earthquake have important implications on the dynamic response.Key words: seismic motion, frequency content, finite elements, soil dynamics.
