From Stoves To Juice Squeezers: Technology In The Modern Home, 1869-1999, Lauren Gallow Dec 2008

From Stoves To Juice Squeezers: Technology In The Modern Home, 1869-1999, Lauren Gallow

Lauren L. Gallow

“The factory and the household have only one factor in common, but a crucial one. Both must improve organization and curtail waste labor.” So Siegfried Giedion opens the chapter ‘Mechanization Encounters the Household’ in his 1948 seminal text, Mechanization Takes Command. Likening the household to the factory in its ever-present quest for organization and labor efficiency, Giedion places technological advancements at the center of this domestic mechanization, a progression that he identifies as beginning in the 1860s. Technology has played a central role in how writers from the late nineteenth century onwards have envisioned the home. Beginning with Catharine Beecher …

Competing Discourses Of Nature In Exurbia., K. Valentine Cadieux Dec 2008

Competing Discourses Of Nature In Exurbia., K. Valentine Cadieux

K. Valentine Cadieux

This paper explores different ways that the category of nature is used in addressing landscape changes associated with exurbia and exurbanization. Nature is an important category in the practices and representations that residents and planners use to construct and maintain exurban landscapes. However, common ways of mobilizing nature in exurban planning discourses oftenobstruct better discussion, rather than facilitate it. Invoking nature can make planning processes more difficult by providing a means for naturalizing planning decisions and also by exacerbating struggles over whose nature will be managed in what ways. More explicitly framing what is meant by nature in exurban …

Sprawl In Europe And America, Michael E. Lewyn Dec 2008

Sprawl In Europe And America, Michael E. Lewyn

Michael E Lewyn

Rebuts the "Inevitability Theory of Sprawl"- the common argument that anti-sprawl policies would be futile in the United States because sprawl has grown even in Europe. Although Europeans are far more likely to travel on foot, bike or public transit than Americans, some commentators argue that these realities are irrelevant because European cities are trending towards sprawl- that is, that Europeans are far more likely to live in suburbs and drive to work than they once did.

This article argues that the European "trend to sprawl" is in the process of reversing itself. Over the past decade, some European cities …

Aftermath: Alpha Chi Omega Sorority: Progress Materializes From Adversity, M. Monica Gillen

M. Monica Gillen

The role of an architect on any project is some combination of design, coordination and consultation. Every project is different as are the circumstances which surround them. In the case of the Alpha Chi Omega sorority, on the campus of the University of Iowa, Iowa City, the house was destroyed by a tornado that tore through town on Aprill3, 2006. Razing and rebuilding in the aftermath would require close coordination with the architect, builders, local building authorities and the Sigma Chapter members in effort to satisfy the various recovery criteria specific to the locale, including budget constraints, current building safety …

Cultivating Just Planning And Legal Institutions: A Critical Assessment Of The South Central Farm In Los Angeles, Clara Irazabal, Anita Punja Dec 2008

Cultivating Just Planning And Legal Institutions: A Critical Assessment Of The South Central Farm In Los Angeles, Clara Irazabal, Anita Punja

Clara Irazabal

The South Central Farm (SCF) in Los Angeles was a 14-acre urban farm in one of the highest concentrations of impoverished residents in the county. It was destroyed in July 2006. This article analyzes its epic as a landscape of resistance to discriminatory legal and planning practices. It then presents its creation and maintenance as an issue of environmental justice, and argues that there was a substantive rationale on the basis of environmental justice and planning ethics that should have provided sufficient grounds for the city to prevent its dismantling. Based on qualitative case study methodology, the study contributes to …

Conmemoraciones, Construcciones, Disputas, Fernando Carrión Mena Arq.

Alcohol Consumption, Alcohol Outlets, And The Risk Of Being Assaulted With A Gun, Dennis P. Culhane, Charles C. Branas, Therese S. Richmond, Michael R. Elliott, Douglas J. Wiebe Dec 2008

Alcohol Consumption, Alcohol Outlets, And The Risk Of Being Assaulted With A Gun, Dennis P. Culhane, Charles C. Branas, Therese S. Richmond, Michael R. Elliott, Douglas J. Wiebe

Dennis P. Culhane

Background: We conducted a population-based case-control study to better delineate the relationship between individual alcohol consumption, alcohol outlets in the surrounding environment, and being assaulted with a gun.

Methods: An incidence density sampled case–control study was conducted in the entire city of Philadelphia from 2003 to 2006. We enrolled 677 cases that had been shot in an assault and 684 population-based controls. The relationships between 2 independent variables of interest, alcohol consumption and alcohol outlet availability, and the outcome of being assaulted with a gun were analyzed. Conditional logistic regression was used to adjust for numerous confounding variables.

Results: After …

Development Of A Model Predictive Controller For Tankless Water Heaters, Gregor P. Henze, David P. Yuill, Andrew H. Coward Dec 2008

Development Of A Model Predictive Controller For Tankless Water Heaters, Gregor P. Henze, David P. Yuill, Andrew H. Coward

David Yuill

This paper describes the development of a novel approach to temperature control of tankless water heaters (TWHs). Conventional methods of controlling TWHs typically allow a high degree of error in the outlet water temperature when subjected to disturbances in flow rate or inlet water temperature. Poor control affects comfort, safety, and energy consumption associ- ated with TWHs. The novel control approach presented here uses model predictive control (MPC) to minimize the outlet temperature error. A dynamic heat transfer model of an electric TWH is developed and validated and used within a MPC-based controller. The controller is interfaced to a physical …

Global Learning And The Making Of Citizen Diplomats, Rebecca Hovey, Adam Weinberg Dec 2008

Global Learning And The Making Of Citizen Diplomats, Rebecca Hovey, Adam Weinberg

Rebecca Hovey

This chapter addresses the need for study abroad programs that prepare students for moral responsibility and democratic civic engagement in an increasingly globalized world. We examine how notions of citizenship, democratic education, and civic engagement can be expanded to a global knowledge community beyond the borders of home campuses and countries. This entails recognition of a global ecology of learning based on reciprocity, recognition of civic identities, and responsibility for one’s actions and representations abroad. We explore the literature on global citizenship associated with study abroad and global civil society in order to understand how the norms, affiliations and markers …
