Event management and facilities management are generally regarded as two separate disciplines. However, for a number of specialised facilities this separation has become blurred. This paper describes a new undergraduate course in event and facilities management at Bond University that formalises this connection. Using the Melbourne Cricket Ground as a case study, the paper identifies how much of the routine facilities planning, including maintenance, cleaning, security, refurbishment and capital improvement, are treated as events and integrated with sporting fixtures as part of the annual event calendar. It is proposed that a similar situation is occurring with other specialised facilities, such …

Using the Melbourne Cricket Ground as a case study, this paper identifies how much of the routine facilities planning, including maintenance, cleaning, security, refurbishment and capital improvement, are treated as events and integrated with sporting fixtures as part of the annual event calendar. Given event management and facilities management share a number of …

Reinventing Airspace: Spectatorship, Fluidity, Intimacy At Pek T3., Alberto Pepe

In this article, I explore the contemporary practice of air travel conceptualizing airports as socio-technical mobilities. Drawing both from the notion of “space” posited by Michel de Certeau and that of “non-place” by Marc Augé, I argue that the supermodern nature of air travel has generated forms of crisis that have embedded themselves in the architecture and the modus operandi of contemporary airports. Airports are necessarily located in a physical and tangible sense, yet their function is so tightly coupled with transience, mobility and spectatorship, that they bring anthropological accounts of “place” to unprecedented extremes. In this article, I analyze …

Using Adult Linkages Project Data For Determining Patterns And Costs Of Services Use By General Relief Recipients In Los Angeles County, Stephen Metraux, Dennis P. Culhane
Dennis P. Culhane
This study examines services use and related costs for two cohorts of General Relief (GR) recipients in Los Angeles County. The study is made possible by the creation of the Adult Linkages Project (ALP), a data warehouse containing data on the GR recipients that spans eight Los Angeles County departments. This integration of data sources and County departments enables a unique window into the comprehensive use of County services by GR recipients, and allows for the exploration of hidden costs that GR recipients incur to Los Angeles County. The identification of such services use patterns forms the basis for service …

Health And Social Characteristics Of Homeless Adults In Manhattan Who Were Chronically Or Not Chronically Unsheltered, Aaron J. Levitt, Dennis P. Culhane, Joe Degenova, Patrick O'Quinn, Jay Bainbridge
Dennis P. Culhane
Objective: This study compared health and social characteristics of two groups of homeless adults in Manhattan—those who were chronically unsheltered and those who were not. Methods: Outreach workers conducted brief, structured interviews with 1,093 unsheltered homeless adults. Respondents were later categorized as being chronically unsheltered on the basis of New York City criteria (sleeping without shelter at least nine of the previous 24 months). Results: The sample had high rates of substance abuse (65%), serious medical issues (42%), and repeated trauma (51%) and low rates of medical insurance (47%) and income entitlements (26%) entitlements. Sixty-seven percent were chronically unsheltered, and …

The 2008 Annual Homelessness Assessment Report To Congress, Dennis P. Culhane, Jill Khadduri, Alvaro Cortes, Larry Buron
Dennis P. Culhane
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) is pleased to present the 2008 Annual Homeless Assessment Report (AHAR), the fourth in a series of reports on homelessness in the United States. The reports respond to a series of Congressional directives calling for the collection and analysis of data on homelessness. The 2008 AHAR breaks new ground by being the first report to provide year-to-year trend information on homelessness in the United States. The report provides the latest counts of homelessness nationwide—including counts of individuals, persons in families, and special population groups such as veterans and chronically homeless people. …

The Second Life Of Urban Planning? Using Neogeography Tools For Community Engagement, Marcus Foth, Bhishna Bajracharya, Ross Brown, Greg Hearn
Bhishna Bajracharya
The majority of the world's citizens now live in cities. Although urban planning can thus be thought of as a field with significant ramifications on the human condition, many practitioners feel that it has reached the crossroads in thought leadership between traditional practice and a new, more participatory and open approach. Conventional ways to engage people in participatory planning exercises are limited in reach and scope. At the same time, socio-cultural trends and technology innovation offer opportunities to re-think the status quo in urban planning. NeoGeography introduces tools and services that allow non-geographers to use advanced geographical information systems. Similarly, …

Comparativo Histórico De La Seguridad Ciudadana Y La Violencia Urbana, Jaime F. Erazo Espinosa Arq., Lorena Flores H. Soc.
Jaime Erazo

Rebuts myth that public transit is inherently unpopular by pointing out that where development is compact and streets are walkable, transit ridership tends to be higher.

Barajar Y Dar De Nuevo: Hacia Una Nueva Comprensión De La Violencia Y La Seguridad, Fernando Carrión Mena

Performance And The City, Kim Solga, D.J. Hopkins, Shelley Orr
Kim Solga
Urban Studies has long understood the city as a 'text'. What would it mean now to rethink that metaphor? In answer to that question, Performance and the City, now in paperback and with a new preface by Susan Bennett, imagines civic spaces built on, and through, theatre and performance of all kinds. Featuring essays by Marla Carlson, Jen Harvie, D.J. Hopkins and Shelley Orr, Ric Knowles, Laura Levin, Michael McKinnie, Rebecca Rugg, Rebecca Schneider, Marlis Schweitzer, Kim Solga, Joanne Tompkins, and Klaus van den Berg, as well as an Afterword by Barbara Hodgdon, Performance and the City explores an interdisciplinary …

The Inherent Building Energy-Cost Relationship: An Analysis Of Thirty Melbourne Case Studies, Yu Langston, Craig Langston
Craig Langston
This study investigates the energy and cost performance of thirty recent buildings in Melbourne, Australia. Commonly, building design decisions are based on issues pertaining to construction cost, and consideration of energy performance is made only within the context of the initial project budget. Even where energy is elevated to more importance, operating energy is seen as the focus and embodied energy is nearly always ignored. For the first time, a large sample of buildings has been assembled and analysed to improve the understanding of both energy and cost performance over their full life cycle. The aim of this paper is …
