Where Land And Water Meet, Mark N. Rhoades Oct 1991

Where Land And Water Meet, Mark N. Rhoades

Architecture Thesis Prep

"The intention of this thesis is to study the waterfront typology, and how the interplay of land and water through the insertion of architectural elements, can reform a sense of place from the shattered urban fabric. The purpose of the waterfront fabric is twofold; to present a facade to the waterfront, and activate the waterfront while maintaining a relationship back to the fabric of the city."

Montauk Transportation Center: The Train Station As Evidence Of The Duality That Exists Between Type And Prototype, Lisa Renee Eader Oct 1991

Montauk Transportation Center: The Train Station As Evidence Of The Duality That Exists Between Type And Prototype, Lisa Renee Eader

Architecture Thesis Prep

"The intent of this thesis is to study and re-interpret an existing building type, and to develop conceptual strategies for a prototype. It will demonstrate the advantages of the prototype and how it can be used as a building block when dealing with specific site considerations. My conclusions drawn from these analyses will depict the evolution of, and develop a relationship between prototype and type."

Architecture And The Articulation Of Passage: A Ferryboat Terminal For Old San Juan, Ruperto Arvelo Oct 1991

Architecture And The Articulation Of Passage: A Ferryboat Terminal For Old San Juan, Ruperto Arvelo

Architecture Thesis Prep

"The primary goal is to develop the area around the ferryboat terminal of San Juan waterfront, understanding such issues as:

-the importance of the bay and the role that the city of Old San Juan played in it as its physical entrance.

-definiteion of the waterfornt edge...

-the connection of Old San Juan to other areas of the metropolitan area through the new ferryboat system...

-ideas of representation, of historical continuity between the traditional and modern architecture, an understanding of the old fabric and how we can complement it, without imitating it or opposing it."

The Roman Villa: An Investigation Of Typology, Timothy De Noble Oct 1991

The Roman Villa: An Investigation Of Typology, Timothy De Noble

Architecture Senior Theses

"The Roman villa is a distinct typology emerging from urban precedents which are transformed by site, programs, and constructional methods and materials in order to represent the Roman city. The reconstruction of Pliny's Laurentine villa, as described in his letter to Clusinius Gallus, provides the context for this investigation of typology and for an exploration of Pliny's urban reproposition...

This scenario allows the incorporation and transformation of typological elements as well as spatial comparisons relative to the chronology o Roman structural technology. The language of the villa reflects the actual materials of the Romans while their assembly necessarily reflects the …

The Mall Comes To Town: Planning For Its Development, John Mullin, Zenia Kotval, Edward Murray Jul 1991

The Mall Comes To Town: Planning For Its Development, John Mullin, Zenia Kotval, Edward Murray

Landscape Architecture & Regional Planning Faculty Publication Series

This article analyzes the impacts of malls on the character and economic base of a community. Based on both applied planning and academic research, it is clear that malls stimulate major changes in the community fabric. It is also apparent that community leaders who have a clear perception that their cities and towns have the potential to attract malls, and prepare for them, will be able to gain far more from their development than those that simply wait and see. The theme of this article, in short, is that a community either plans for a mall or it is planned …

A Study Of The Planning Process Utilized By Urban School Divisions In Constructing Public Schools In The State Of Virginia, 1984-1989, Patricia Liverman Powers

Theses and Dissertations in Urban Services - Urban Education

This research tested utilization of the "team approach" to planning for new school construction. The "team approach" is characterized by seven essential variables. To successfully plan a new school building, educators must: (1) involve more than one individual in collecting data; (2) provide quantitative data to the architect; (3) provide qualitative data to the architect; (4) provide data to the architect in advance of design; (5) provide data to the architect in written form; (6) provide original data, not prototype data; and (7) provide data which is used by the architect. Collective use of all seven variables constitute the "team …

Center for Architecture and Urban Planning Research Books

Sponsored by NASA/Universities Space Research Association, this study investigated advanced lunar habitats for 11 astronauts and mission specialists for durations of 20 months. Design recommendations are based on environmental response to the harsh lunar environment, human habitability, transportability, constructability, resilience and suitability for NASA lunar research missions in the early 21st century. Drawings include master plans, construction sequencing, detailed floor plans, sections, interior perspectives and construction details.

El Regreso A La Ciudad Construida, Fernando Carrión Mena

Fernando Carrión Mena

“The Return to the Built City”. This paper examines some hypotheses related to the transformation process that urban transportation in Quito is undergoing with the introduction of the trolleybus. The paper emphasizes an urban integrated perspective rather than a sectored one to provide a clearer perception of the process of transformation of the key channels which sustain the quality of urban communication. The paper comprises three parts: the first part defines the current context in which urban transport transformations develop; the second part examines the link between transportation and the new trends in urbanism; and the third and final part …

The Little Colonel: A Phenomenon In Popular Literary Culture, Sue Lynn Mcdaniel Apr 1991

The Little Colonel: A Phenomenon In Popular Literary Culture, Sue Lynn Mcdaniel

SCL Faculty and Staff Publications

Written by Annie Fellows Johnston (1863-1931), a set of twelve novels published between 1895 and 1912, influenced thousands of readers to emulate the main character, Lloyd Sherman, and her chums. As the rise of the “New Woman” found multi¬tudes of southern women fearful that such change would threaten the stability of the home, impressionable young readers idealized the Old South and accepted the selfless values which Johnston taught through the Little Colonel series. Drawing upon both her own experiences and those of her devoted audience, Johnston recorded life as she knew it and provides modern read¬ers with insight into the …
