Industry In The Southern Thames Street Neighborhood Of Newport, Rhode Island, 1820 -1920, Daniel P. Titus

Faculty and Staff - Articles & Papers

In the study of Industry in the Southern Thames Street Neighborhood of Newport, Rhode Island from 1820 -1920 we by necessity must touch, even if ever so slightly, on the history of industry in Newport, not just the District, both before and after that time period. We must try to understand what life was like for the residents of the District and the city. We must try to understand what was happening in the area, the city, and in a larger sense, the region to get an understanding of the social and economic forces at play on their everyday lives. …

Rituals Transforming Cultures, Cultures Transforming Rituals: Tea Importers' Headquarters + Interactive Tea Museum, Todd Rubin Dec 2003

Rituals Transforming Cultures, Cultures Transforming Rituals: Tea Importers' Headquarters + Interactive Tea Museum, Todd Rubin

Architecture Thesis Prep

Throughout tea's history, rituals have developed ranging from strictly obeying principles in Japanese tea ceremonies to loosely interpreting principles of tea such as drinking a bottle of iced tea in America. Locating a program to explore the historic, cultural, and political connotations of Boston, in its Inner Harbor, tea can be culturally transformed through a process of an interactive museum in conjunction with the headquarters for a tea importing company, which will explore cultural and ritual issues of tea. This exploration will further enhance these transformations of cultures and rituals that exist with the ever changing life of tea.

Reconstructing Memories: An Investigation Of The Relationship Between Mental And Real Space In Art And Architecture, Claudia S. Behar Dec 2003

Reconstructing Memories: An Investigation Of The Relationship Between Mental And Real Space In Art And Architecture, Claudia S. Behar

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

As an architect and artist I believe that there is a strong relationship between art and architecture. The perceived relationship between both has at times been thought more or less significant; however, history has shown us that a society or an individual can enhance the relationship between the two disciplines. I am working on establishing the strength of that relationship. My work of art is focused on the creation of spaces. It is about experiencing a variety of places through the visual and the emotional senses. The architectural settings that I depict and construct are far from the realm of …

Trust, Collaboration, And Financial Return In Conservation/Development Partnerships, New England Environmental Finance Center Dec 2003

Trust, Collaboration, And Financial Return In Conservation/Development Partnerships, New England Environmental Finance Center

Economics and Finance

In early 2002 the New England Environmental Finance Center hosted a series of roundtable discussions among municipal officials, residential developers, land trust representatives, and others about "Innovative Approaches to Land Conservation and Smart Growth". Among our observations was that for many of the over 20 conservation/development partnerships we discussed in the series, creation and maintenance of trust was central to success or failure of various stages of the partnership. This suggested a link between creation of trust and financial return for traditionally opposed project partners.

To further examine this matter, we interviewed 11 round table participants and asked questions about …

Kinetic Performance : A Study In Portable Architecture, Ernest Brian Abuin Nov 2003

Kinetic Performance : A Study In Portable Architecture, Ernest Brian Abuin

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research was to explore a new way of experiencing a performance space using the portability and flexibility of a cargo container. Since the 17th century there has been a split between theater, as a written work, and architecture. Theater has lost its founding essence becoming more about the structure and less about the performance.

Contemporary theater designs came through the development of street performances, which developed into theater types such as the Black Box and lately video and projection screening. With the exploration of kinetic uses in architecture and defragmentation of a cargo container there is …

Updating Bridge Reliability Based On Bridge Management Systems Visual Inspection Results, Allen C. Estes, Dan M. Frangopol Nov 2003

Updating Bridge Reliability Based On Bridge Management Systems Visual Inspection Results, Allen C. Estes, Dan M. Frangopol

Architectural Engineering

Bridge management systems have become increasingly sophisticated over the past decade and provide valuable information about the structural condition of all bridges in the national database. At the same time, reliability methods have gained increasing prominence and are used to forecast life-cycle performance over many decades of structural life. Such reliability analyses need to be updated based on the results of inspections. Specifically targeted nondestructive evaluations are the preferred solution, but are not always available for every bridge. This paper examines how the visual inspection data provided from bridge management systems already in place can be used to update the …

Futures Thinking For The Built And Human Environment, Lorcan Sirr, John Ratcliffe Nov 2003

Futures Thinking For The Built And Human Environment, Lorcan Sirr, John Ratcliffe

Reports

We are currently living through an era where we can, and need to, create exciting new possibilities in the way we think about, plan, design and build new places and spaces for working and living. At the same time, two irresistible forces – change and complexity – face decision-makers charged with framing and executing future policy and practice for the built and human environment. This paper generally argues the case for employing a ‘prospective’ process through scenario thinking for strategic planning and management in the urban arena. It does not attempt to identify or explore the advances made in planning …

Customassation, Paul F. Maguda Oct 2003

Customassation, Paul F. Maguda

Architecture Thesis Prep

"The architecture of mass customization must be sensitive and selective at this point in time.

It must be sensitive to the historical lineage of mass production in architecture.

It must be selective in an application appropriate of the principles of the new model.

It must be selective in a location that represents old model industry set against the diverse new model society.

This architecture is best understood as a process of transformation from old model to new."

Isomorphic Correspondence: Hybrid Different Media: Music And Architecture, Ki Ho Choi Oct 2003

Isomorphic Correspondence: Hybrid Different Media: Music And Architecture, Ki Ho Choi

Architecture Thesis Prep

School of Crafting Instruments: Hudson Yard in Manhattan, New York, NY

"In my thesis approach to the music and architecture, I am not evoking the classical Pythagoras and Palladio. I am more dealing with architecture and music as new ground of present architecture and new hybrid medium between them...

Architecture, just linked music with simple arithmetic ratios, should confront and try to parallel to contemporary music theory...

To hybrid these different media, I have chosen the instruments and Bella Bartok's musical Theory. Instrument has architectonic form with musical character while Bartok's musical theory has visual character. These two media can …

What Are You Thinking.... Allowing Publics To Engage The Surfaces Of The City, Matthew 'Mick' Mcnutt

Encouraging and encompassing the play element in culture, architecture can represent a society constructed with systems of exchange based upon information, communication, and imagination among varying publics in order to counterbalance the existing system of capital enterprise."
