Theses and Dissertations

This section details key points from the data on racial, ethnic, and age groups across Nebraska.

RACIAL AND ETHNIC MINORITIES IN NEBRASKA

Mapping Quality Of Life In Nebraska: Migration Rates, Aileen S. Garcia, Rodrigo Cantarero, Grant Daily, Maria Rosario T. De Guzman, Jeong-Kyun Choi, Soo-Young Hong, Sarah Taylor

Aileen Garcia

KEY POINTS AND IMPLICATIONS

Nebraska is a state that is not often viewed as affected significantly by mobility and migration. As a state, the net migration rate of 1.1 from 2015 to 2016 is fairly low compared to others like Florida (16.0) or Nevada (14.4). However, data from this report suggests that there is, in fact, substantial movement of people moving in and moving out; as well as pockets within the state where there is higher than average influx of both domestic and international migrants.

In general, migration trends in the state mirror national trends of “rural flight” where people …

UBT International Conference

In the recent history of the modernization of dwelling and housing culture, much attention has been given to oral history methodology. However, less research has been done on 1960’s houses and very little on actual homeowners’ firsthand experiences in their homes in Kayseri, Turkey. For this reason, this study attempts to use oral history as a way to critically understand how the modern home was built and how residents lived in the space in the 1960’s. In this context, the Akdamar Family Apartment is assumed to provide a large corpus of data, documenting the living, subjective, social, cultural, and dialectical …

The Traditional Tower Houses Of Kosovo And Albania -Origin, Development And Influences, Caroline Jaeger-Klein

UBT International Conference

Gheg-Albanians as well as Tosk-Albanians consider a distinct tower-house type of their traditional cultural heritage. Hence the closer look upon the structures in their geographical distribution from the Dukajin plains in nowadays Kosovo to the Dropull valley close to the Greek border provides a wide range of variations. Generally those structures serve as impressive residential houses (banesa) for rich landlords, warlords, tax collectors and merchants performing a rural-urban lifestyle. Therefore, a sophisticated blend of the all-time defendable Albanian tower house (kulla), still existing quite intact in the western Kosovo plains, and the comfortable Turkish life-style influenced residence was developed during …

Urban Heritage And Place-Making: Preservation Through Mobility Enhancement In The Historic Centre Of Prizren, Lorika Hisari

UBT International Conference

Since the armed conflict ended and during a decade of state building Kosovo has gone through substantial reforms required for its European Union integration. This was reflected into its built environment including the historic areas and cultural heritage preservation. Legislation, plans, policy documents and strategies foresee an all-inclusive and a balanced way of development. Practice, however, informs the opposite as the drafted documents are hardly implemented. This paper discusses and examines the mobility in a public space in the Historic Centre of Prizren in relation to the preservation of urban heritage. The paper reveals how the institutional (non)action and, the …
