A System Of Environmental Analysis And User-Input Studies For Medical Facilities, Gary Thomas Nash Dec 1972

A System Of Environmental Analysis And User-Input Studies For Medical Facilities, Gary Thomas Nash

Architecture and Planning ETDs

The thesis first presents the concept of environmental analysis and user-input studies as it relates to architecture. Issues and problems that evolve from the concept are discussed. There is a need within the architectural profession to establish a system of analysis that will allow the architect to understand how people behave in and react to specific buildings or spaces he or someone else has designed. Understanding the behavioral implications within such spaces should be an important part of the architect's education and his professional knowledge. There exist however several basic problems when the issue of environmental analysis and user-input is …

The study reviewed campers on three levels-- wilderness, primitive, and modern. Each of these categories was then divided into ten and trailer campers and a model campground facility developed for each. The facilities which presently exist in the park were then compared with the models. The comparison revealed that study area facilities were lacking in many of the …

Noise Control In Low-Income Housing, Jose Rafael Carballeira Jul 1972

Noise Control In Low-Income Housing, Jose Rafael Carballeira

Architecture and Planning ETDs

This study is directed toward the problem of noise pollution. Noise pollution, being a recent type of pollution, has not received the amount of attention given to the other types of ecological pollution.

Thus far, very little consideration has been given to noise. Architects have shown some interest in hushing our environment and owners of low income housing have shown even less consideration of the matter. Although the situation of silencing our environment looks grim, since the writer embarked on this study, there has come into being the first and only public listing of an acoustical consultant in Albuquerque.

Folded Plates As A Building System., Lyman Frank Richey May 1972

Folded Plates As A Building System., Lyman Frank Richey

Architecture and Planning ETDs

Inasmuch as construction is one of this nation’s largest industries, if not its largest, and consequently bears significantly on the nation’s economy, it would seem that a greater effort should be put forth to find a system which is economical to construct, erect, and transport. The possibilities presented in the new application of materials suggest new structural forms, of which folded plates are one type. The introduction of the computer will extend even further the possibilities of adaptation of new forms due to its analyzing ability. This project is not an attempt to establish a new direction in architecture, for …

Architecture and Planning ETDs

My thesis is that designed environments for learning should facilitate the learning. In this context both the concept of learning and of designed environments will be regarded as purposeful. The learning will be limited to humans. I have introduced a number of elements applicable to education, learning, learners, environments, and interactions between individuals as a background and framework of reference. Within this framework some expanded concepts of one form of designed environments for learning in schools have been considered. These elements and concepts then can be listed in a development and evaluation composite which I have called Environmental Dimensions. When …

Guidelines for evaluating the land use controls for Bear Lake that will result from the Plan are derived from the shoreland ordinances of Wisconsin and Minnesota and the lakeshore experiences of New Hampshire and Vermont.

Expanded Video Environments, Glade Frank Sperry Jr. Apr 1972

Expanded Video Environments, Glade Frank Sperry Jr.

Architecture and Planning ETDs

Traditionally man has subjugated his visual media to a secondary, passive role. He has bombarded his senses with all forms of visual media from 3-D movies to Smell-o-vision, but still he refuses to see things with his mind rather than just with his eyes. The structure of visual media, cinema and television being the primary visual media, has in the past reinforced this mindless acceptance of information which has not changed in content in almost seventy years in the case of cinema and twenty-five years in the case of television. The content of our visual media has been based on …

Facilities For Permanent Manned Extra-Terrestrial Habitation., Richard Bruce Moeller

Architecture and Planning ETDs

In the future, space exploration must find better ways of obtaining information. These ways must be able to provide more precise and detailed information, while being more economical than present methods of exploration. This will be increasingly difficult as exploration teams are sent to the more distant planets due to the travel time involved.

One answer to the problem is the use of permanently manned research stations. This project is concerned with developing concepts that can be used to design such stations. The discussion is in three parts.

The first part concerns general information. It includes what site information is …

The Yard: Conceptual, Spatial And Territorial Significance., Leslie Argo Chase May 1971

The Yard: Conceptual, Spatial And Territorial Significance., Leslie Argo Chase

Architecture and Planning ETDs

Early domestic architecture developed from three basic traditions: d) the megaron, b) the planned courtyard, and c) unplanned growth around a central court. The orientation of the home was inward, in order to provide protection. The traditions of the megdron and the informal courtyard development were brought together in Roman Imperial times, in both the villa suburban and the villa rustica. In the northern regions of the Roman Empire, the courtyard was closed over, creating a large interior space called the “great hall.”

With the growth of feudalism, the castle became the prevalent architectural form, providing protection for the feudal …

Communication Techniques In Architectural Programming:A Game Process As Information Transfer., Patricia F. Richards May 1971

Communication Techniques In Architectural Programming:A Game Process As Information Transfer., Patricia F. Richards

Architecture and Planning ETDs

The thesis is concerned with the form taken an architectural program in which the programmer clearly communicates his findings to the designer.

People handle learned information in three ways:

  1. By retaining it intact;
  2. By fragmenting it;
  3. By recombining the fragments.

It is the hypothesis of this thesis that the programmer is the fragmenter of information, the program is a collection of the fragments, and the designer is the person who recombines the fragmented information.

A card form of programming has been designed to handle these fragments and a game process allowing for direct interaction between the client group and the …

Early English Theatres, Leta Strother Jan 1971

Early English Theatres, Leta Strother

Honors Theses

During the reign of Queen Elizabeth, sport and amusement became increasingly popular to everyone. Even the poor were enthusiastic and interested in drama. Although different forms of plays like the miracle and morality had existed for many years, the drama had finally outgrown the inn-yard and wagon stages. Therefore, a new place was necessary for the presentation of plays. These 'new places' were called theatres.

There were three kinds of theatres in Queen Elizabeth's time. They were the public theatres, the private theatres, and the court theatre.

This information was then compared to an existing institution. The comparison data was derived through observation over a five-month period, informal interviews with the children, staff and administrators, a questionnaire distributed to staff members and a physical facility checklist. A synthesis of the literature review …

Interstate 40 Through North Nashville, Tennessee: A Case Study In Highway Location Decision Making, Hubert James Ford Dec 1970

Interstate 40 Through North Nashville, Tennessee: A Case Study In Highway Location Decision Making, Hubert James Ford

Masters Theses

The purpose of this investigation was to prove that state highway departments are assumed to be technical experts and that this role conception, in fact, enables them to make intuitive political decisions under the guise of technical expertness. The location of Interstate 40 through the black community in North Nashville was used as a case in point.

In order to examine the interaction of the various actors involved, the author emphasized selected decision strategies for each and related the theoretical setting to the legislated, hierarchical, and procedural framework in which highway location decisions are actually made. The extent of rationality …

The Recreation Potential Of Abandoned Railroad Rights-Of-Way: Feasibility Of The Smoky Mountain Railroad As An Urban Regional Hike/Bike Trail, Dale Clayton Eberhardt Aug 1970

The Recreation Potential Of Abandoned Railroad Rights-Of-Way: Feasibility Of The Smoky Mountain Railroad As An Urban Regional Hike/Bike Trail, Dale Clayton Eberhardt

Masters Theses

The provision of outdoor recreation facilities, easily accessible to our urban populations, has become a prime concern of federal, state, and local governments. A major problem encountered in the provision of such facilities, is the scarce supply of land available for outdoor recreation, in and around our urban areas. The abandoned right-of-way (railroad, canal, road, etc.), is seen as one solution to the existing land crisis. This thesis is concerned with the abandoned railroad right-of-way and its potential for trail oriented activities. The thesis utilizes the abandoned Smoky Mountain Railroad as a case study to illuminate the many problems that …

Richmond And Virginia In The 1867 Election For A Constitutional Convention, Nelson Lankford Apr 1970

Richmond And Virginia In The 1867 Election For A Constitutional Convention, Nelson Lankford

Honors Theses

The purpose of this paper is to present the reaction of Richmond's conservative white newspapers to the election in October 1867 for a constitutional convention. The three papers include the overtly racist Enquirer, the moderate Whig, and the Dispatch, which claimed a larger circulation than the other papers combined. All three newspapers, however, considered the Negro to be inferior and feared radical reconstruction as the ultimate disaster for Virginia. The press unanimously favored maintaining white supremacy and editorialized for the organization of conservative white opposition to the radical party in the October election.

The Economic Feasibility Of The Re-Use Of The Louisville And Nashville Railroad Depot, Knoxville, Tennessee, William J. Schwartzkopf

Masters Theses

A problem which exists in many cities today is the abandonment of railroad depots. Re-use should be considered both by the railroad industry and cities. If the property is to remain vacant or underused, there may be an unfavorable effect on the surrounding uses. It is the purpose of this thesis to determine the economic feasibility of re-use of the abandoned Louisville and Nashville depot in Knoxville, Tennessee. A case study was conducted to determine the highest and best re-use for this parcel of land. The main assumption is that the architectural quality of the shell of the structure will …

Form-Function Relationships In The Development Of Lds Church Architecture, Ebbie Lavar Davis Jan 1970

Form-Function Relationships In The Development Of Lds Church Architecture, Ebbie Lavar Davis

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of the functions: ordinances, meetings, programs of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on the development of the physical plant. Inversely, the effect of Church house forms on the development of Church function was investigated. It was found that:
1. In Latter-day Saint Church development, form has always followed function.
2. Function has influenced form to a great extent. Priesthood, meeting, or other program needs are a prime factor in changing the form and design of Church buildings.
3. Form has influenced function only insofar as the physical …

A Water Park, Barbara Kennedy Jun 1969

A Water Park, Barbara Kennedy

Architecture and Planning ETDs

Recreation is esape from compulsion to work for a living, and leisure is the free time when we don't have to do anything at all. Recreation is non-compulsive activity or non-activity; leisure is the time we have for it.

Now we are told that, with the expansion of automated production processes, before long everything society needs may be produced by a minority of the work force. The compulsion to work may suddenly be removed from the majority. Then, what price recreation or leisure?
