A Comparison Of Residential Markets For Chain Retail Stores In The Central Business District Of Knoxville With Residential Markets For Chain Retail Stores In The Central Business Districts Of Birmingham, Lexington, And Greenville, Jennifer Robin Hassell

Masters Theses

(Need for Study)

A potential solution for the problem of high vacancy of retail space in the central business district of Knoxville may be revitalization of the retail role of the central business district. The role may not be equal to the once vital historical role. In other words, the role may not be as a regional center but rather a center to serve the needs of the community within and surrounding the central business district. This new role may be secondarily supported by the cultural opportunities of the central business district. These opportunities are the focus of …

A Guide To Utah Native Plants And Their Use In The Landscape, Jared F. Barnes May 2001

A Guide To Utah Native Plants And Their Use In The Landscape, Jared F. Barnes

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

As a landscape architecture student, I am interested in the use of plant materials; they are a fundamental part of my design palette. However, I am concerned with the quantity of water used for irrigation of mostly non-native plant materials in built landscapes of the arid west. An estimated 60-65% of water consumed in Utah from May September is used to irrigate landscapes. Landscape architects must do their part in dealing with the impending water crisis by modifying current practices. An important first step is to use and encourage others to use more drought tolerant native plants. The purpose of …

Creating Community Greenbelts Through Tdr Zoning, Tim B. Watkins May 2001

Creating Community Greenbelts Through Tdr Zoning, Tim B. Watkins

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Many cities and towns in the lntennountain West were founded on the ideals of clustered community development with surrounding greenbelts by Morn1on settlers in the mid nineteenth century. Since the twentieth-century development of the automobile, increased mobility has enabled residential and commercial development to disrupt surrounding rural lands with scattered growth. Correctly applied, TOR (Transfer of Development Right) strategies could reverse negative sprawling development trends by channeling growth towards existing communities to simulate the abandoned pioneer town and country model. A community development transfer strategy can respect private property rights, and allow fanners to keep their land in agriculture while …

Feasibility Of Canal Trails In North Logan, Corbett Belcher May 2001

Feasibility Of Canal Trails In North Logan, Corbett Belcher

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

The intent of this report is to analyze the feasibility of canal trails in North Logan City. The canals of Cache Valley are very historic, and cultural elements in the landscape. The original intent of the canals was to provide a supplementary water source to irrigate crops, for those who did not live near a water body. As populations have grown, and development has taken over much of these crop lands, the debate about what to do with these canals has heated up. One of the most common and previously debated ideas, is to leave the canals open, and provide …

The Living Units In Cairene Houses In The Ottoman Period: Towards A New Understanding Of Cairene Domestic Architecture, Ahmed Maher Hassaballah

Archived Theses and Dissertations

Cairene domestic architecture comprises a variety of housing types, responding to the needs of different socioeconomic classes of society. Of these types, two are studied in detail herein, namely, palaces and mansions of the grandees and middle-class houses. As suggested by Hanna, the latter were divided into separate unequal living units. The study in hand investigates the existence of similar living units in the palaces and mansions'. This is accomplished through analyzing living units in some middle-class houses to determine their structure, types and organization. These characteristics are used to define similar units in palaces and mansions.

Exploring The Potential Usefulness Of Binary Space Partitions In Architectural Representations, Michael Hoon Jan 2001

Exploring The Potential Usefulness Of Binary Space Partitions In Architectural Representations, Michael Hoon

Theses

There have been recent advances developed within the computer gaming industry that have made real-time first-person perspective spatial experiences feasible on the personal computer. Principally through the use of binary space partition tree structures, developers of threedimensional gaming environments are able to convey to computer users a convincing sense of movement through space. The technology behind these advances may be termed as a particularization of Virtual Reality. This paper will outline research intended to determine the possible usefulness of binary space partitions in the fields of architectural education and practice. The feasibility of this technology was studied by directly observing …

Ramirez Solar House : A Case Study Of Early Solar Design, Joanna Kendig

Theses

The Ramirez Solar House in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area is an early historic example of passive solar design. The house was designed by Henry N. Wright, a significant contributor in solar research. Wright's 1944 design with a large window wall and generous overhangs represents a significant step in solar design development. The house, now under the stewardship of National Park Service, has been nominated for the National Register of Historic Places.

The Ramirez House's solar performance was a subject of this study. Instrumentation was set up to record temperatures, humidity and illumination in the unoccupied and un-heated …

Signs Sense: Exploring Signs In Urban Place Making, Amy Elizabeth Pecquet Jan 2001

Signs Sense: Exploring Signs In Urban Place Making, Amy Elizabeth Pecquet

LSU Master's Theses

Signs are prominent elements of the urban landscape; they display messages to the public, orient people in complex environments, act as social landmarks, and serve as a means of cultural expression. Despite the omnipresence of signs, designers have yet to capitalize on their potential urban spaces as creative design tools for enhancing a sense of place. Using literature and urban case studies, this thesis explores several quantitative methods to learn about effects produced by signs in the urban landscape. Case studies in New Orleans, Louisiana locate every sign in defined areas on Bourbon, Royal, and Canal Street to compare and …

Healing The Whole Person: A Post Occupancy Evaluation Of The Rooftop Therapy Park At Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center, Knoxville, Tennessee, Brad Edward Davis

LSU Master's Theses

This study used a post occupancy evaluation to assess the impact of an existing hospital garden on its users. Previous studies of hospital gardens have been of passive garden use. This study addressed gardens including physical therapy, while also considering the emotional, spiritual, and social aspects. The POE included behavioral observation, interviews with the designer and lead therapist, a staff survey, and a patient questionnaire. A Prototypical Computer Museum, Eric Otto Ryder Jan 2001

A Prototypical Computer Museum, Eric Otto Ryder

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Civilization seems barely able to keep up with the new information technology. Therefore, I propose a place where the technologies of the future may be interacted with like the comfortable knowledge of the past. I propose a place where technology may be interacted on as in the realm of the past with the doors of the future ahead. The Museum of Science and Industry, where the grasp of our technological history is displayed, would be an ideal site for the creation of a Prototypical Computer Museum. With its close proximity to the University of South Florida, resources and participants would …
