Selectivity And Metaplasticity In A Unified Calcium-Dependent Model, Luk C. Yeung, Brian S. Blais, Leon N. Cooper, Harel Z. Shouval

Science and Technology Department Faculty Journal Articles

A unified, biophysically motivated Calcium-Dependent Learning model has been shown to account for various rate-based and spike time-dependent paradigms for inducing synaptic plasticity. Here, we investigate the properties of this model for a multi-synapse neuron that receives inputs with different spike-train statistics. In addition, we present a physiological form of metaplasticity, an activity-driven regulation mechanism, that is essential for the robustness of the model. A neuron thus implemented develops stable and selective receptive fields, given various input statistics

Teaching Energy Balance Using Round Numbers: A Quantitative Approach To The Greenhouse Effect And Global Warming, Brian S. Blais Jan 2003

Teaching Energy Balance Using Round Numbers: A Quantitative Approach To The Greenhouse Effect And Global Warming, Brian S. Blais

Science and Technology Department Faculty Journal Articles

The idea of energy balance used to explain the greenhouse effect and global warming is often confusing for students, primarily because the standard quantitative analysis uses many constants and units. A "round" unit method is presented, which maintains the quantitative aspects of the standard analysis, but is much more intuitive for students.

Cancer Mortality Among American Indians And Alaska Natives: Regional Differences, 1994-1998., Dk Espey, Re. Paisano, N. Cobb

Native Health Database Full Text

This monograph delineates cancer mortality rates among American Indians and Alaska Native within the different regions served by the Indian Health Service (IHS). The table and charts depict broader geographic regions than in previous IHS cancer mortality monographs. The estimated IHS service population for each region and the cancer mortality rates from 1994 to 1998 are presented. Comparisons are made to the general U.S. population for the same time period. The intention of this publication is to provide detailed information about thew impact of cancer among Native American peoples, with a focus on the regional variability of cancer incidence for …

"Whisky's Fe Drinkin'; Water's Fer Fightin'!" Resolving A Collective Action Dilemma In New Mexico, John R. Brown

Law of the Rio Chama

The water budget of New Mexico's Middle Rio Grande region incurs annually a deficit of 55,000 acre-feet through groundwater mining. To address this unsustainable condition, a State-mandated regional water planning effort involving significant public participation is underway to produce a regional water plan. The action arena where this process is taking place may not be appropriately constituted to enable stakeholders to agree on and implement a comprehensive plan to "balance all desired and required uses with sustainable supply." The heterogeneity of the actors and their interests and the complexity of the decision situations they face contribute to a high level …

Effects Of Sucrose Concentrations And Fly Age On Feeding Responses And Survival Of Female And Male Western Cherry Fruit Flies, Rhagoletis Indifferens, Wee L. Lee Jan 2003

Effects Of Sucrose Concentrations And Fly Age On Feeding Responses And Survival Of Female And Male Western Cherry Fruit Flies, Rhagoletis Indifferens, Wee L. Lee

Entomology Papers from Other Sources

The effects of single meals of different sucrose concentrations on feeding responses and survival of 8–24-h-old, 1–2-, 10–12- and 31–36-day-old female and male western cherry fruit flies, Rhagoletis indifferens Curran, were determined. Feeding time and food consumption response patterns in both sexes within age groups were curvilinear. Feeding times increased as sucrose concentrations increased, and were longest when the sucrose concentration was 100% (dry). Consumption of dilute wet sucrose was low, whereas consumption of concentrated wet sucrose was high. However, consumption of dry, 100%sucrose was also low. One to 2-day-old flies of both sexes that had not previously fed consumed …
