Anticipating Infection: How Parasitism Risk Changes Animal Physiology, Patricia C. Lopes
Anticipating Infection: How Parasitism Risk Changes Animal Physiology, Patricia C. Lopes
Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research
- Uninfected animals can attempt to prevent parasitism in many ways. Behavioural avoidance of parasitized conspecifics, for instance, is documented in several species.
- Interactions with parasitized conspecifics can also, however, lead to physiological changes in uninfected animals, an effect that is much less well studied, and consequently, less well understood. The way in which exposure to parasitism risk changes the physiology of uninfected animals and the impacts of those changes on animal fitness remain a significant gap in knowledge.
- Determining how the disease environment experienced by animals impacts their physiology, survival and reproduction has major implications for our knowledge of how …
On Epidemiology As Racial-Capitalist (Re)Colonization And Epistemic Violence, Ryan J. Petteway
On Epidemiology As Racial-Capitalist (Re)Colonization And Epistemic Violence, Ryan J. Petteway
OHSU-PSU School of Public Health Faculty Publications and Presentations
This commentary reflects upon power-knowledge dynamics and matters of epistemic, procedural, and distributive justice that undergird epidemiological knowledge production related to racial health inequities in the U.S. Grounded in Foucault’s power-knowledge concepts—“objects”, “ritual”, and “the privileged”—and guided by Black feminist philosopher Kristie Dotson’s conceptualization of epistemic violence, it critiques the dominant positivist, reductionist, and extractivist paradigm of epidemiology, interrogating the settler-colonial and racial-capitalist nature of the knowledge production/curation enterprise. The commentary challenges epidemiology’s affinity for epistemological, procedural, and methodological norms that effectively silence/erase community knowledge(s) and nuance in favor of reductionist empirical representations/re-presentations produced by researchers who, often, have never …

Importance Of Glut Transporters In Disease Diagnosis And Treatment, Abdelrahman Ismail, Marina Tanasova
Importance Of Glut Transporters In Disease Diagnosis And Treatment, Abdelrahman Ismail, Marina Tanasova
Michigan Tech Publications
Facilitative sugar transporters (GLUTs) are the primary method of sugar uptake in all mammalian cells. There are 14 different types of those transmembrane proteins, but they transport only a handful of substrates, mainly glucose and fructose. This overlap and redundancy contradict the natural tendency of cells to conserve energy and resources, and has led researchers to hypothesize that different GLUTs partake in more metabolic roles than just sugar transport into cells. Understanding those roles will lead to better therapeutics for a wide variety of diseases and disorders. In this review we highlight recent discoveries of the role GLUTs play in …

Clinically-available blood pumps and total artificial hearts for pediatric patients continue to lag well behind those developed for adults. We are developing a hybrid, continuous-flow, magnetically levitated, pediatric total artificial heart (TAH). The hybrid TAH design integrates both an axial and centrifugal blood pump within a single, compact housing. The centrifugal pump rotates around the separate axial pump domain, and both impellers rotate around a common central axis. Here, we concentrate our development effort on the centrifugal blood pump by performing computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis of the blood flow through the pump. We also conducted transient CFD analyses (quasi-steady …
Chemically Induced Phytoextraction Of Lead (Pb) Contaminated Soil By Switchgrass (Panicum Virgatum L.), Assisted With Bap And Nta Applications, Genna Hart
Master of Science in Integrative Biology Theses
The accumulation of lead (Pb) deposits in soil is a growing global concern. Phytoextraction of Pb-contaminated soil can be enhanced by soil chelation to increase the bioavailability of Pb. In the initial study nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA) 5mM, the alkylpolyglucoside (APG) Triton X-100 (2%), and nano-silica were applied to switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.) growing in 5L pots of Pb-contaminated soil. The second experiment used 10mM NTA, the alkylpolyglycoside Triton X-100 (2%), foliar application of the plant growth regulator 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP) twice per week, Triple-12® nutrients, and Infuse™ a soil fungicide which were applied to switchgrass Plants were grown in a controlled …
Heavy Metal Distribution Across Three Georgia Estuaries Using Coastal Sharks As Sentinel Species, Allyson Stiles
Heavy Metal Distribution Across Three Georgia Estuaries Using Coastal Sharks As Sentinel Species, Allyson Stiles
Master of Science in Integrative Biology Theses
Estuaries are transitional environments that play key roles in coastal ecosystem functioning by providing essential habitats to ecologically important plant and animal species. Estuaries are exposed to a number of anthropogenic impacts, including heavy metal contamination from human activities. However, few studies have examined heavy metal distribution within Georgia’s estuaries and how intact salt marsh ecosystems could play a role in filtering and sequestering contaminants, such as Mercury (Hg). This thesis examined blood total mercury (THg) concentrations of four coastal shark species and concentrations of five heavy metals (Hg, As, Cr, Cu, and Pb) within the water and sediments of …
Debiasing Cyber Incidents – Correcting For Reporting Delays And Under-Reporting, Seema Sangari
Debiasing Cyber Incidents – Correcting For Reporting Delays And Under-Reporting, Seema Sangari
Doctor of Data Science and Analytics Dissertations
This research addresses two key problems in the cyber insurance industry – reporting delays and under-reporting of cyber incidents. Both problems are important to understand the true picture of cyber incident rates. While reporting delays addresses the problem of delays in reporting due to delays in timely detection, under-reporting addresses the problem of cyber incidents frequently under-reported due to brand damage, reputation risk and eventual financial impacts.
The problem of reporting delays in cyber incidents is resolved by generating the distribution of reporting delays and fitting modeled parametric distributions on the given domain. The reporting delay distribution was found to …

C3ar Plays Both Sides In Regulating Resistance To Bacterial Infections, Jesse A. Corcoran, Brooke A. Napier
C3ar Plays Both Sides In Regulating Resistance To Bacterial Infections, Jesse A. Corcoran, Brooke A. Napier
Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Activation of the complement pathway results in the production of bioactive C3a, a product of C3 cleavage, which interacts with membrane-bound receptor C3aR to regulate innate immune cell function and outcome of bacterial infection. Specifically, previous research has identified mechanistically distinct and cell type–specific roles for C3aR in regulating innate immune cell inflammatory state, antimicrobial killing capacity, and metabolism. Historically, the production of C3a has been relegated to the serum; however, recent studies have provided evidence that various cell types can produce intracellular C3a that stimulates intracellular C3aR. In light of these new results, it is imperative that we revisit …

A method for implementing a CCU to demonstrate downconversion is presented, and empirical results are provided.
Batterer Intervention Program Evaluation: A Portland, Oregon Program Case Study, Julie M. Conner
Batterer Intervention Program Evaluation: A Portland, Oregon Program Case Study, Julie M. Conner
University Honors Theses
Batterer intervention programming (BIP) has shown up as a source of treatment for men who abuse women since the late nineteen-seventies and have since continued to expand. Research has been done to examine how effective these programs are in many different settings at reducing intimate partner violence, but little is known about programs specific to the state of Oregon. BIPs are used as an alternative to incarceration for individuals convicted of domestic violence: existing programs are based on the Duluth Model and Cognitive Behavioral Theory (CBT). Other modalities have utilized trauma-informed approaches, psychoeducation, holistic modeling, and risks, need, and responsivity …

A Look At The Missing And Murdered Indigenous Women Crisis: Investigation Of Potential Causes And Effects, Verity Saige Vogel
University Honors Theses
In North America, Indigenous women go missing and are murdered at a rate higher than any other demographic. Scholars and governmental agencies agree that the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW) crisis is a pressing issue; it was not until a series of successful social media campaigns (using the hashtag #MMIW) and other grassroots activism took root across First Nations and Native communities in North America that the gravity of the situation became widely reported. Although many agree that the MMIW crisis is a wicked problem (in that it has many contributing factors that amplify its effect and contribute to …

Designing, Implementing, And Evaluating A Unit That Utilizes Effective History Teaching Practices, Haley Holland
Designing, Implementing, And Evaluating A Unit That Utilizes Effective History Teaching Practices, Haley Holland
Theses and Dissertations
Because elementary teachers are viewed as subject-matter generalists who are not specialized in teaching history, this qualitative action research project explored my practice as I designed, implemented, and evaluated a unit that utilized effective history teaching practices. The study took place in my fourth-grade classroom which resides in the Intermountain West. The data was analyzed with Cochran-Smith and Lytle's (1999) three types of knowledge as a priori codes. Inductive processes were then used to find patterns and themes. The study found that designing this unit involved engaging in historical practices and using traditional lesson planning techniques. Further, implementing the study …
Prosodic Modeling For Hymn Translation, Michael Abraham Peck
Prosodic Modeling For Hymn Translation, Michael Abraham Peck
Theses and Dissertations
Prosody is known in linguistics as the "suprasegmental" features of language such as syllable stress and intonation. It is also known in the fields of poetics and musicology with alternate definitions and modeling practices. Concepts of prosody are further compounded when considering prosodic phenomena throughout the languages of the world. While the resulting lack of a universal concept of prosody may be tolerable in such a variety of paradigms, there is one paradigm that requires a unified model of prosody. This is the paradigm of hymn translation, which requires prosodic features to align not only musically, poetically, and linguistically, but …
Gradient Conditioning In Deep Neural Networks, Michael Vernon Nelson
Gradient Conditioning In Deep Neural Networks, Michael Vernon Nelson
Theses and Dissertations
When using Stochastic Gradient Descent (SGD) to train Artificial Neural Networks, gradient variance comes from two sources: differences in the weights of the network when each batch gradient is estimated and differences between the input values in each batch. Some architectural traits, like skip-connections and batch-normalization, allow much deeper networks to be trained by reducing each type of variance and improving the conditioning of the network gradient with respect to both the weights and the input. It is still unclear to which degree each property is responsible for these dramatic stability improvements when training deep networks. This thesis summarizes previous …

Estimating Age In Mule Deer: Accuracy And Influence On Reproduction, Morgan S. Hinton
Estimating Age In Mule Deer: Accuracy And Influence On Reproduction, Morgan S. Hinton
Theses and Dissertations
Accurate estimates of parameters and demographic rates of wildlife populations are crucial to management and conservation. One parameter of interest is age because it influences multiple demographic rates and behaviors including reproduction, dispersal, migration, and disease transmission. There are a number of methods used to estimate ages of wildlife. One of the most common methods used for mammals is evaluation of patterns in dental eruption and tooth wear. In the first chapter, we evaluate the accuracy associated with estimates of age from dental eruption and patterns of tooth wear for mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus). In the second chapter, we use …
Field Based Study Of Gravel Liquefaction, Jashod Roy
Field Based Study Of Gravel Liquefaction, Jashod Roy
Theses and Dissertations
Characterization and assessment of liquefaction potential of gravelly soil in a reliable cost-effective manner has always been a great challenge for the geotechnical engineers. The typical laboratory investigation techniques have proven to be ineffective for characterizing gravelly soil due to the cost and difficulty of extracting undisturbed sample from gravelly deposits. The traditional in-situ tests like SPT or CPT are not very suitable for gravelly soil because of interference with large size gravel particles which can artificially increase the penetration resistance. The Becker Penetration Test, well known for gravelly soil characterization, is cost-prohibitive for routine projects and is not available …
A Comparison Of Statistical Methods For Modeling Count Data With An Application To Hospital Length Of Stay, Gustavo Fernandez, Kristina Vatcheva
A Comparison Of Statistical Methods For Modeling Count Data With An Application To Hospital Length Of Stay, Gustavo Fernandez, Kristina Vatcheva
School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations
Background
Hospital length of stay (LOS) is a key indicator of hospital care management efficiency, cost of care, and hospital planning. Hospital LOS is often used as a measure of a post-medical procedure outcome, as a guide to the benefit of a treatment of interest, or as an important risk factor for adverse events. Therefore, understanding hospital LOS variability is always an important healthcare focus. Hospital LOS data can be treated as count data, with discrete and non-negative values, typically right skewed, and often exhibiting excessive zeros. In this study, we compared the performance of the Poisson, negative binomial (NB), …
Maturation And Substrate Processing Topography Of The Plasmodium Falciparum Invasion/Egress Protease Plasmepsin X, Sumit Mukherjee, Suong Nguyen, Eashan Sharma, Daniel E Goldberg
Maturation And Substrate Processing Topography Of The Plasmodium Falciparum Invasion/Egress Protease Plasmepsin X, Sumit Mukherjee, Suong Nguyen, Eashan Sharma, Daniel E Goldberg
2020-Current year OA Pubs
The malaria parasite Plasmodium invades a host erythrocyte, multiplies within a parasitophorous vacuole (PV) and then ruptures the PV and erythrocyte membranes in a process known as egress. Both egress and invasion are controlled by effector proteins discharged from specialized secretory organelles. The aspartic protease plasmepsin X (PM X) regulates activity for many of these effectors, but it is unclear how PM X accesses its diverse substrates that reside in different organelles. PM X also autoprocesses to generate different isoforms. The function of this processing is not understood. We have mapped the self-cleavage sites and have constructed parasites with cleavage …
