The Relationship Between Sexual Abuse And Disordered Eating: Applications Of Narrative Therapy, Taylor Heilman, David Bright
The Relationship Between Sexual Abuse And Disordered Eating: Applications Of Narrative Therapy, Taylor Heilman, David Bright
Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision
While research has demonstrated a significant relationship between sexual abuse and the development of disordered eating behaviors, research on techniques to address disordered eating formed in this manner remains limited. Posttraumatic stress as well as internalized feelings of guilt, shame, and blame all contribute to the development of disordered eating in those who have experienced sexual violence. Narrative Therapy focuses on restorying an individual’s experienced and lived themes to make the creation of a new, healthy interpretation of trauma. Limited research has explored the potential application of restorying to populations experiencing disordered eating and sexual abuse trauma, independently. This conceptual …

Educating Counselors About Offenders With Mental Illness: An Exploratory Study, Frances I. Ellmo, Leigh F. Holman, Richard James, Lacy Kemker
Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision
Racially and economically disenfranchised offenders with mental illness (OMI) are incarcerated at disproportionately high rates but experience less access to and utilization of mental healthcare. There is a need for trained counselors to work in forensic environments who are competent to provide multiculturally sensitive social justice-oriented interventions. However, there is little research exploring the extent counseling students are offered didactic or experiential training for working with OMI. Utilizing concurrent embedded mixed methods to explore relationships between opportunities and obstacles to counseling programs offering this training, this study finds interest in training exists but potential concerns about bias, safety, and other …

Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision
In this qualitative phenomenological study, the purpose was to explore the experiences of recent online Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP)-accredited counselor education and supervision (CES) graduates concerning their dissertation completion process. Past research had shown a dissertation noncompletion rate 10%–20% higher in distance education programs compared to traditional institutions. Participant recruitment was facilitated by criterion sampling and snowball sampling and included seven recent graduates of online CACREP-accredited CES programs. Semi-structured interviews were used to collect data. Data analysis conducted using Smith et al.’s six-step data analysis process yielded three significant themes: dissertation task engagement, …

The Professional Identity Development Of Counseling Students During Extreme Stressors: Lessons Learned In The Covid-19 Pandemic, Edward Ewe, Kok-Mun Ng
The Professional Identity Development Of Counseling Students During Extreme Stressors: Lessons Learned In The Covid-19 Pandemic, Edward Ewe, Kok-Mun Ng
Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision
Based on Bronfenbrenner’s bioecological framework and current literature, we discussed the impact of the COVID-19 crisis may have shaped the professional identity development (PID) of counseling students and the ecosystems of counselor education. While the discipline recognizes the importance of paying attention to counseling students’ PID, the discourse on the topic in the context of extreme environmental stressors such a pandemic appears to be lacking. We discussed in this paper the opportunity the COVID-19 pandemic has presented to counselor educators and supervisors (CES) to frame extreme challenging moments like theses as times to facilitate the strengthening and internalizing of counselor …

An Evaluation Of Findings From A Sbirt Training Program In Counselor Education, Tiffany Lee, Andrew Clay, Karis Callaway, Stephen E. Craig, Georgiana Fisher
Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision
The effective implementation of empirically supported interventions is critical for the mitigation of problematic substance use. Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) has been identified as an efficacious approach for initial response to individuals who have, or are at risk of developing, a substance use disorder. For SBIRT to be delivered appropriately, helping professionals must be adequately trained in its implementation. As a part of a three-year grant project, counselor educators at a large Midwestern university provided intensive training on SBIRT to students in a counselor education program. The outcomes of this training, specifically related to satisfaction, opinion, …

Teaching Case Conceptualization Skills To Clinical Mental Health Students To Enhance Clinical Competency And Cognitive Complexity, Jennifer L. Cline, Debbie C. Sturm, A. Renee Staton
Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision
A primary purpose of counselor education is the development of competency in diagnosis, case conceptualization, treatment formulation, and intervention. This paper describes a series of experiential case-based workshops designed to directly target and enhance students’ understanding of these specific clinical mental health counseling competencies in order to promote student involvement in constructivist learning, develop students’ cognitive complexity, and elucidate the thinking of an experienced clinician. This paper provides an overview of the workshop design and implementation, discussion of workshop efficacy with examples, and suggestions for curricular implementation.

Health Behavior Research
Using the Orsmond and Cohen feasibility framework, the primary aim of this study was to assess the feasibility of the implementation of recruitment strategies, data collection procedures, and managerial resources needed to assess pro- and anti-inflammatory biomarkers from low-income, younger Hispanic adults. The secondary aim of this study was to describe the relationship between discrimination stress and inflammation as pilot work for future studies. Data were collected in a Houston-area community center from self-identifying Hispanic adults (ages 21–35) (August 2018). Inflammation was evaluated from blood samples, and interviewer-administered surveys in participants’ preferred language measured discrimination stress (Hispanic Stress Inventory-2 discrimination …

A Reasoned Action Approach To Pregnant Smokers’ Intention To Switch To E-Cigarettes: Does Educational Attainment Influence Theory Application?, Eric D. Schisler, Paul Branscum, Lydia Buckley, Rebecca Mccann, Emily Richardson, Abbie Luzius, Page D. Dobbs
Health Behavior Research
Social determinant research has noted educational attainment to be among the strongest influencing factors for tobacco use during pregnancy. Concurrently, maternal e-cigarette use has doubled in recent years, with some citing it as a safer alternative to combustible cigarettes. To better understand the decision-making practices of pregnant persons based on educational attainment, the reasoned action approach (RAA) was used to evaluate factors that may be associated with the intention to switch from cigarettes to e-cigarettes. A sample of U.S. pregnant persons (n = 267) between 18-40 years of age, who smoked at least one cigarette in the past 30 …

Effects And Reflections Of The Media In Crisis Management Administrative Crises In Institutions As A Model, Raad Fadhil Jameel Al-Shakhli
Journal of STEPS for Humanities and Social Sciences
It is no secret to everyone that the media constitutes a creative message that adheres to transparency, thought and truth and overlaps with the philosophy and message of the public and engages with it in its pioneering and brilliant form. Today, a decisive factor for managing and confronting all crises, including administrative crises that harm the body of the institutions of the administrative apparatus of states internally and externally, in terms of the strength of institutional performance, or facing cases of corruption in both the administrative and financial aspects, organizational structures, the level of delivery of the services provided, or …

Problematic Online Gaming. Is It Real And Does It Matter To Our Teenagers?, Kevin Kaplan Md, David Spielberg, Binal Kancherla, Daniel Glaze, O'Brian Smith, Timothy Vece, Marianna Sockrider
Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk
Background: Video games and social media have become an ubiquitous part of our society. Video games have been associated with both positive and negative health consequences. There is a growing body of literature supporting the idea that users can develop problematic interactive media use. We hypothesized that teenagers who screened positive for internet gaming disorder would have correlations with other psychosocial and behavioral concerns when compared to their peers.
Methods: An urban cohort of high school students aged 14-18 years completed validated self-reported questionnaires to screen for internet gaming disorder, risk of depression, daytime sleepiness, and quality of life measures. …
The Cultivation Of Systemness For Enhanced Equity, Diversity And Inclusivity At A Mid-Sized District School Board In The Province Of Ontario, Pino Buffone
The Dissertation-in-Practice at Western University
The cultivation of systemness for enhanced equity, diversity and inclusivity at a mid-sized district school board in the province of Ontario is addressed. The development of shared mindsets regarding a small number of ambitious goals (system coherence) and the implementation of administrative processes such as policies, procedures, practices and protocols (system alignment) that support the optimization of the multi-year strategic plan may, at times, prove difficult to achieve, especially as it relates to bias awareness and critical consciousness, as well as ameliorated fairness and impartiality throughout the organization. Viewed constructively as an opportunity for organizational improvement towards enhanced equity, diversity …

Using Plot Photographs To Estimate Tundra Vegetation Cover In Northern Alaska, Hana Christoffersen
Masters Theses
Plot photography can provide a quick, robust method to measure vegetation, especially in polar environments where logistics can be expensive and challenging. The success and widespread adoption of plot photography in the Arctic hinges on the accuracy of image analysis and data product interpretation. The relative cover of eight vegetation classes was estimated using a point frame and digital camera across thirty, 1-m2 plots at Utqiaġvik, Alaska from 2012 to 2021. Geographic object-based image analysis (GEOBIA) was applied to generate objects and classify the three band (red, green, blue) images. Machine learning classifiers (random forest, gradient boosted model, classification …

Telomerase Reverse Transcriptase Marks A Novel Population Of Adult Stem Cells In The Mouse Brain That Respond To Metabolic Interventions By Modulating Adult Brain Plasticity, Gabriel S. Jensen
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Telomerase reverse transcriptase (TERT) is expressed by quiescent adult stem cells (qASC) in numerous adult murine and human tissues but has never been explored in the adult brain. Here, these data demonstrate that TERT+ cells in the adult mouse brain represent a novel population of multipotent qASCs. TERT+ cells were localized to numerous classical neuro/gliogenic niches including the ventricular-subventricular zone, hypothalamus and olfactory bulb, as well as newly discovered regions of adult tissue plasticity such as the meninges and choroid plexus. TERT+ cells expressed neural stem cell markers such as Nestin and Sox2, but not markers of activated stem/progenitor cells, …

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications
This paper concerns fractional powers of monomial ideals. Rational powers of a monomial ideal generalize the integral closure operation as well as recover the family of symbolic powers. They also highlight many interesting connections to the theory of convex polytopes. We provide multiple algorithms for computing the rational powers of a monomial ideal. We also introduce a mild generalization allowing real powers of monomial ideals. An important result is that given any monomial ideal I, the function taking a real number to the corresponding real power of I is a step function which is left continuous and has rational …

Race And Regulation Podcast Episode 10 - Administrative Law's Racial Blind Spot, Daniel E. Ho
Race And Regulation Podcast Episode 10 - Administrative Law's Racial Blind Spot, Daniel E. Ho
Penn Program on Regulation Podcasts
Administrative law has a racial blind spot, argues Daniel E. Ho of Stanford Law School. Judges have long set aside agency actions when government officials have failed to consider the differential impacts of their policy decisions on subgroups of business owners, park visitors, and even animals—but not when they have failed to consider differential impacts based on race or ethnicity. In this episode, Professor Ho traces how civil rights and administrative law have diverged over the past fifty years, as U.S. court decisions have removed issues of racial discrimination from administrative law’s purview. He concludes by discussing reforms that could …
(Mis)Recognition Of Customary Marriages: A Comparative Analysis Of Canadian And South African Family Law, Corbin W. Golding
(Mis)Recognition Of Customary Marriages: A Comparative Analysis Of Canadian And South African Family Law, Corbin W. Golding
Canadian Journal of Family Law
This paper explores the methods of recognizing customary marriages conducted between Indigenous participants within Canada and South Africa, respectively. It primarily focuses on the functional and philosophical consequences of these methods on the validity of the customary marriages. This paper begins by establishing the problem of misrecognition, which is an injustice that devalues and dehumanizes marital relationships that differ from the European norm. It then turns to an analysis of the forms of recognition in both Canada and South Africa. The former is examined through an investigation of historical case law and more recent constitutional issues, while the latter analysis …
A Gender-Based Approach To Historical Child Support: Comment On Colucci V Colucci, Jodi Lazare, Kelsey Warr
A Gender-Based Approach To Historical Child Support: Comment On Colucci V Colucci, Jodi Lazare, Kelsey Warr
Canadian Journal of Family Law
In June 2021 the Supreme Court of Canada (the “Court”) released Colucci v Colucci, its second decision in twelve months dealing with the complex subject of historical (commonly referred to as retroactive) child support. The case worked a significant shift in the law, arguably the first major revision to the law since the Court’s initial consideration of historical child support in DBS, in 2006. This comment suggests that Colucci represents a new understanding of the way that claims for historical child support should be considered in Canadian family law. The comment argues that in changing the applicable framework, …

La Réception Au Québec Des Gestations Pour Autrui Délocalisées : La Filiation Post-Tourisme Procréatif En Mal D’Institution, Harith Al-Dabbagh
Canadian Journal of Family Law
